Molecular Mobility In A Model Polymer Composite, Joan Ethel Gambogi Jan 1990

Molecular Mobility In A Model Polymer Composite, Joan Ethel Gambogi

Masters Theses

"The adsorption of aminoalkysilane coupling agents onto silica surfaces and the interaction of these functional silanes with a bismaleimide and an epoxy resin has been studied using solid-state NMR techniques. 13C CP-MAS was used to confirm the bonding between the silence and bismaleimide (BMI) resin and elucidate the nature of the crosslinking reaction of BMI. Deuterated coupling agents were synthesized and adsorbed on silica surfaces. The motional dynamics were probed using deuterium solid-echo NMR. It was determined that the motion of the alky portion of the coupling agents was consistent with gauche migrations (gtt ↔ tig) and pair gauche …

Microstructural Characterization Of Rapidly Solidified And Extruded Ti-Al-Nb Alloys, Danny Joe Edwards Jan 1990

Microstructural Characterization Of Rapidly Solidified And Extruded Ti-Al-Nb Alloys, Danny Joe Edwards

Masters Theses

"Two titanium alloys have been characterized using transmission and scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and optical metallography techniques. Both of these alloys were rapidly solidified by melt spinning, the resulting ribbons pulverized, and the powders then extruded into cylindrical billets. The alloys are based on the compositions Ti-21.3Al- 9 Nb-0.6-Mo-2.6V and Ti-13.2Al-2.6Nb-0.5Mo-0.9V-0.5Zr-3.1B in atomic percent. The first alloy was examined in both the as-extruded condition and in the annealed condition (looo0c for 12 hours). The second alloy was examined in the as-extruded condition only.

For the first alloy, the as-extruded microstructure consisted of a B2 matrix with alpha-2 particles at …

Broadband Impedance Matching Using Multi-Section Quarter-Wave Transformers, Alan Richard Webber Jan 1990

Broadband Impedance Matching Using Multi-Section Quarter-Wave Transformers, Alan Richard Webber

Masters Theses

"The history of the multi-section quarter-wave transformer is traced from its beginnings with lumped-element ladder networks in the l 930's. Starting with the geometric mean formula from quarter-wave transformer theory, and insisting on small reflections at the input, a formula is developed for choosing the step impedances of a multi-section quarter-wave transformer. Bandwidth and ripple of a multi-section quarter-wave transformer frequency response are investigated through computer simulation of transformers designed using this formula and found to be directly related. Bandwidth is found to be directly related to the number of sections, and inversely related to the relative mismatch which the …

Research outputs pre 2011

The report contains feedback from a study undertaken by students enrolled in the Residential Care Unit, a part of the A.D.A. Working with the Aged course. The subject for study was "Quality of life in residential services for elderly people. This was seen as an important area for investigation because the number of elderly people will increase to 15 per cent of Australia's population by the year 2021, and it is likely that even with more community support services, some people will need residential care...

Experience Of Stigmatization And Discrimination Of Former Psychiatric Inpatients, Amy Rappaport Jan 1990

Experience Of Stigmatization And Discrimination Of Former Psychiatric Inpatients, Amy Rappaport

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

In our culture as well as other cultures, there are social norms that are prescribed and expected to be followed. If an individual does not act in accordance with these social norms, there are often consequences. In Edgerton's (1971) article, "Anthropology, Psychiatry, and Man's Nature," he states, "Sometimes, of course, the sanctions against deviant behavior are supernatural, consisting of immediate and horrible punishment by gods, spirits, ancestors or the like" (p. 45). In present day culture in the United States, the researcher contends that there are both traditional and modern belief systems that serve to ostracize the stigmatized deviant.

A Strategy For The Use Of Videotaped Sermons In A Multi-Church District, Lloyd Edwin Hallock Jan 1990

A Strategy For The Use Of Videotaped Sermons In A Multi-Church District, Lloyd Edwin Hallock

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem. In smaller churches the quality of the message delivered during the worship service on weeks the pastor is absent, is often reported to be weak and lackluster. Previous testing has determined that video instruction is as effective in teaching as live instruction. Presently, some pastors are reported to be using video in small churches. The purpose of this study was to determine if the videotaped sermon is a viable alternative worship form for small churches.

Method. Biblical, Ellen G. White, and contemporary worship literature were reviewed on the nature of preaching and worship. Five videotaped sermons were shown over …

The Development And Implementation Of Role Negotiation Between The Pastor And The Members Of The Anoka/Maple Plain, Minnesota Seventh-Day Adventist Multi-Church Parish, Bruce Teel Juhl Jan 1990

The Development And Implementation Of Role Negotiation Between The Pastor And The Members Of The Anoka/Maple Plain, Minnesota Seventh-Day Adventist Multi-Church Parish, Bruce Teel Juhl

Doctor of Ministry Projects

There is a great need among pastors for clarification of roles in light of the rapid changes in society and the increased expectation of parishioners that he/she be skilled in an ever widening range of pastoral function. There is also a need for pastors to develop skills in negotiating their roles with the congregation(s) they serve so that differences may be narrowed.

The project includes an extensive review of Old Testament conceptual models (priest, prophet, king, and shepherd) and New Testament orders (apostolate, deaconate, and elder) for the purpose of discerning the biblical foundations for modern pastoral roles. It also …

The Influence Of A Series Of Sermons On The Attitudes And Attendance Of The Crossroads Seventh-Day Adventist Church In New York, Linford Lee Martin

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem. A very important concern felt by the pastoral staff and lay leadership at the Crossroads Seventh-day Adventist Church, New York City, was that of building and maintaining the attendance at weekly worship services. The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of a specially prepared series of sermons dealing with worship-related topics on the attendance and attitudes of those who assemble regularly to worship at this church.

Method. A series of eight sermons on worship was prepared and presented at the church during a one-week period. A pretest questionnaire was administered to members and visitors shortly before …

An Approach To Seventh-Day Adventist Radio Evangelism In Ghana, Ebenezer Obodai Sackey Jan 1990

An Approach To Seventh-Day Adventist Radio Evangelism In Ghana, Ebenezer Obodai Sackey

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Since Ghana gained independence from colonial rule, religious broadcasting has undergone self- and governmental censorship. Post-independence governments have either clamped down on the activities of church organizations by disagreeing with them or have intimidated them in numerous ways to tone down some aspects of their activities that the government considers unacceptable. In recent times, both individual Ghanaians and government functionaries, especially, have looked at the Christian church with suspicion and skepticism. Many of them consider the Christian message, at least in the way it is presented, out of touch with, and irrelevant to the everyday needs and realities of the …

Comparing Audience Perceptions Of Constructs Presented Expositorily With Those Presented Topically When The Same Method Of Bible Study Is Used, Rollin Laverne Shoemaker Jan 1990

Comparing Audience Perceptions Of Constructs Presented Expositorily With Those Presented Topically When The Same Method Of Bible Study Is Used, Rollin Laverne Shoemaker

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

As the literature shows, every preacher needs to develop his own guidelines for presentation of theological constructs (preaching). The literature also shows the importance of the letter to the Galatians for the church, especially during and since the Reformation. Thus, this study attempts to compare audience perceptions of theological constructs (derived from my study of Galatians) presented expositorily with those presented topically when the same guidelines are used.

Method

This study was undertaken to: (1) develop guidelines for exegesis, that would be useful for preaching, starting with the Greek text, (2) develop guidelines for audience and community analysis, (3) …

An Assessment Of Education And Training Needs For Bibliographic Instruction Librarians, Scott Mandernack Jan 1990

An Assessment Of Education And Training Needs For Bibliographic Instruction Librarians, Scott Mandernack

Library Faculty Research and Publications

A study was conducted in 1986 by the Education and Library Use Committee of the Wisconsin Association of Academic Librarians to determine the educational backgrounds and characteristics of bibliographic instruction (BI) librarians in Wisconsin. The results of the survey indicated that the education for BI has been insufficient and that there is a very real need for additional and/or supplemental education in this area. The methods most preferred for educational enhancement are self-study and workshops. A recommendation was made for one approach to resolving the dilemma: offering a series of courses, in the form of one- to three-day seminars, through …

A Program To Prepare Parents Isolated From Parenting Role Models For Appropriate Developmental Interaction With Infants And Toddlers, Jane K. Harris Jan 1990

A Program To Prepare Parents Isolated From Parenting Role Models For Appropriate Developmental Interaction With Infants And Toddlers, Jane K. Harris

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

Because of demographic factors, care givers enrolled in park district infant and toddler programs appeared isolated from parenting role models. A need existed to provide parent education and resource material without detracting from the established purpose of the course.

The author designed and implemented a modification to a series of five, eight-week classes based on a demand-driven model which established the teacher as a resource person for parenting skills in addition to responsibility for the primary curriculum subject matter. Without diverting significant class time from the motor skills oriented classes, the program fostered interaction among the parents and caregivers in …

Development Of An Adoption Agency As Supplement To Current Services Of A Residential Group Care Facility, William E. Painter Jr Jan 1990

Development Of An Adoption Agency As Supplement To Current Services Of A Residential Group Care Facility, William E. Painter Jr

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The shortage of adoptive parents trained and prepared to successfully parent sexually abused children to youth indicated a need for this residential group care facility to develop a proposal for the addition of a specialized adoption agency as an adjunct to current agency services.

The author developed a proposal for the addition of a specialized adoption agency based upon extensive research and a needs assessment of referral sources. The plan for the addition of the adoption agency was therefore based upon not only the agency's own experience in placement of the graduates of its preparation for adoption program, but also …

The Development Of Standing Committees For The Board Of Directors Of A Non-Profit Agency, Stanley L. Pryor Jan 1990

The Development Of Standing Committees For The Board Of Directors Of A Non-Profit Agency, Stanley L. Pryor

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

An effective board of directors is crucial to a nonprofit agency. The effectiveness of the board of directors depends on its organization and its ability to use its resources. Standing committees are the major resource available to boards of directors. However, ineffective development and utilization of standing communities can result in a number of problems.

The author examines the problems that a nonprofit agency encounters when expanding committees were not organized and utilized correctly. A step-by-step procedure was designed and implemented to develop and maintain a variety of standing committees. The procedures consisted of seven steps: defining the problem and …
