Using Refraction Caustics To Monitor Evaporation Of Liquid Drop Lenses, James A. Lock, Jearl D. Walker, James H. Andrews Nov 1990

Using Refraction Caustics To Monitor Evaporation Of Liquid Drop Lenses, James A. Lock, Jearl D. Walker, James H. Andrews

Physics Faculty Publications

Irregularities in the perimeter of a water droplet adhering to a vertical pane of glass cause perturbations in the curvature of the droplet surface. When laser light passes through such a droplet, the perturbations produce a far field refraction caustic, which is a section of the caustic known as the parabolic umbilic in the catastrophe theory classification. As the water evaporates and the droplet surface curvature changes, the section of the parabolic umbilic caustic on the viewing screen also changes. We determine the evolution of curvature of the droplet surface by observing the evolution of the far field caustic and …

Dynamic Origin Of Non-Abelian Berry's Phase Effects In A Simple Atomic System, Martin K. Ligare Nov 1990

Dynamic Origin Of Non-Abelian Berry's Phase Effects In A Simple Atomic System, Martin K. Ligare

Faculty Journal Articles

The full effect of adiabatically varying Hamiltonians on systems prepared in eigenstates of the stationary Hamiltonian often includes geometric Berry's phases. For degenerate systems these effects may result in transitions between distinct degenerate eigenstates that can be described in terms of a non-Abelian gauge potential. I demonstrate the explicit dynamic origin of such transitions between degenerate angular-momentum sublevels in an atom that is subject to collinear electric and magnetic fields that rotate adiabatically. The origin of the effects becomes clear when eigenstates of the total Hamiltonian, which includes the rotating fields, are calculated. The total Hamiltonian removes the degeneracy, and …

Defoliation Effects On Production And Morphological Development Of Little Bluestem, J. J. Mullahey, Lowell E. Moser, Steven S. Waller Nov 1990

Defoliation Effects On Production And Morphological Development Of Little Bluestem, J. J. Mullahey, Lowell E. Moser, Steven S. Waller

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Response of key warm-season grasses to time, frequency, and duration of defoliation is needed to develop grazing systems for the Nebraska Sandhills. A 3- year (1986 to 1988) study was conducted on a Valentine fine sand (mixed, mesic Typic Ustipsamments) at the Gudmundsen Sandhills Laboratory near Whitman, Nebraska, to determine the effect of defoliation on little bluestem [Schizachyrium scoparium (Michx.) Nash]. Treatments were: 1 defoliation (to 7 cm) on 10 June, 10 July, or 10 Aug.; 2 defoliations on 10 June and 10 Aug.; and 3 defoliations on 10 June, 10 July, and 10 Aug. Control plants were harvested …

Three-Dimensional Longwave Infrared Synthetic Image Generation Incorporating Angular Emissivity Effects Using Ray-Tracing Techniques, Eric Shor, Carl Salvaggio, John Schott Nov 1990

Three-Dimensional Longwave Infrared Synthetic Image Generation Incorporating Angular Emissivity Effects Using Ray-Tracing Techniques, Eric Shor, Carl Salvaggio, John Schott

Presentations and other scholarship

A technique for longwave infrared (LWIR) synthetic image generation (510) is shown which yields improved radiomeiric accuracy in the 8-14 .tm bandpass. This process uses a modified LOWTRAN 6 atmospheric transmission/upwelled radiance code and computer graphics ray-tracing techniques. A scene is created by placing faceted objects into world coordinates with rotation, translation, and scaling parameters. Each facet is assigned a material index and temperature. The material index points to optical properties for that material. The modified LOWTRAN 6 code incorporates sensor response function when computing tables of the atmospheric transmission and upwelled and downwelled radiances. A ray-traced image is then …

Microscopic Calculations Of Low-Energy Reaction Cross Sections, R. E. Warner, Gary Felder Nov 1990

Microscopic Calculations Of Low-Energy Reaction Cross Sections, R. E. Warner, Gary Felder

Physics: Faculty Publications

Microscopic calculations of nuclear reaction cross sections and total reaction probabilities are compared with measurements for the d+Si, 3,4He+Si, and d+Ge systems at energies ranging from 2 to 53 MeV/nucleon. Good agreement is obtained, except for 3He+Si at the very lowest energies, when zero-range nucleon-nucleon forces are assumed and realistic nuclear density distributions are used in the tail regions, where the models are most sensitive. The agreement is less good for finite-range forces. A strong absorption model gives much poorer agreement with the recent 4He+Si measurements than do the microscopic models.

Tis A Gift To Be Simple: Aesthetics And Procedural Reform, Janice Toran Nov 1990

Tis A Gift To Be Simple: Aesthetics And Procedural Reform, Janice Toran

Michigan Law Review

This essay advances the hypothesis that aesthetic considerations play a role in the formulation of new legal procedures and the preference for one procedure over another. Of course, other considerations like the social impact of a particular procedure or procedural system, its economic consequences, and its role within existing legal institutions are important, often decisive, factors influencing procedural choice. My argument is simply that additional unarticulated and unrecognized aesthetic considerations also play a role in the procedural reform process. I refer to these elements as "aesthetic" because they focus on the formal qualities of a procedure (simplicity, elegance, coherence, and …
