Exchange Rules In The Mediation Of Social Welfare Work, Paula L. Dressel, Michelle Waters, Mike Sweat, Obie Clayton

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This article demonstrates the utility of the concept of exchange rules for understanding welfare worker agency in the mediation of workplace ideologies and behaviors. The exchange rules of complementarity, reciprocity, and beneficence are applied to the issues of service worker burnout, worker-client interactions, and labor issues to illustrate their conceptual and practical power. This analysis from an interactionist perspective complements the macro-level observations of the fundamental contradictions within the social welfare enterprise. It also suggests avenues for the mediation and alleviation of certain workplace dilemmas.

Testing The Underclass Concept By Surveying Attitudes And Behavior, Kathleen J. Pottick

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Recent interest in the problems of an underclass has highlighted deficiencies in the conceptual understanding of the term and empirical investigation into its dynamics. This research note describes the current definition of the concept and presents recent empirical tests of it. By presenting available survey data sets that can identify underclass attitudes, values and behavior, the note refines the deliberations on measurement. The purpose of this study was to determine the differences between industrial and municipal executives' practices and perceptions toward the administrative requirements of a water pollution control system as set forth in a National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System permit. This was a descriptive study that utilized a two-part attitudinal survey designed to obtain the perceptions of the executives (N = 171) of all major industries and all major municipalities in the State of Tennessee who had direct responsibility for the administrative requirements of an NPDES permitted water pollution control system. The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

The paraffin embedded specimens of 35 Aujeszky's disease cases in pig were examined with Avidin-biotin-complex (ABC) method to detect Aujeszky's disease viral antigen. Eighty percent of the cases (28/35) gave positive reaction. Aujeszky's disease viral antigen was detected in cerebrum (17/28), cerebellum (12/17), medulla oblongata (7/8), spinal cord (4/4), and tonsils (5/11). It is concluded that ABC method is a sensitive, reliable and rather simple technique to diagnose Aujeszky's disease on paraffin embedded tissue section.

Two hundred and forty buffaloes of different age groups (1 month to more than 5 years) were randomly selected to study the rate of liver fluke infection. Sixty buffaloes heavily infected with liver fluke were selected to study the variation of fluke eggs in every month throughout the year. Two snail habitats were randomly selected to study the population of snail intermediate host of the live fluke, Lymnaea auricularia rubiginosa. Geology And Volcanology Of The Recent Evolution Of Galeras Volcano, Colombia, Marta Lucía Calvache

Galeras volcano is located in southwestern Colombia, rising 1600 m above Pasto the capital city (population of 300,000) of the department of Nariño. The most recent activity at Galeras volcano(< 4500 years) included six major eruptions before the reactivation of 1988-present. The activity at the volcano has been characterizated by eruptions of vulcanian type. Gravitational column collapse is the most common origin of the fines-depleted co-ignimbrite breccias and pyroclastic flows. Commonly, a large part of the material ejected with each explosion is not juvenile but includes country rock as accessory lithics. In the initial explosions at Galeras, the country rock appear to be more involved that any other material. Later in the eruption, the products become more juvenile-rich deposits. The total volume of deposits related to Galeras volcano has been calculated to be 0.71 km³

Galeras volcano has had a fairly constant chemical composition, characterized by high silica, medium potassium andesites. Products at Galeras are mainly composed of zoned plagioclase, hypersthene, augite, titanomagnetite, ilmenite and traces of apatite. Amphibole and olivine may be also present. A shallow, small magma ( « 0.5 km³) chamber is consistent with the data for Galeras Volcano. The magmatic conditions in this reservoir prior to eruptions have …

A Linear Analysis Of Equatorial Atlantic Ocean Thermocline Variability, Robert H. Weisberg, T. Y. Tang

Observed variations in the Atlantic Ocean's equatorial thermocline are compared at four locations with simultations using an analytical reduced-gravity model. The comparison shows the essential features of the seasonal wind-forced thermocline response to be accounted for by a linear superposition of equatorial long waves, evolving basinwide, tending to bring the zonal pressure gradient into balance with the wind stress. A frequency response function is derived whose properties provide a basis for discussing the large scale features of the equatorial Atlantic Ocean's seasonal cycle-for example, its evolution along the equator, the maximum upwelling region observed in the Gulf of Guinea and …
