Rehabilitation Practice and Science
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of different weight bearing on reducing spasticity in stroke patients. Quantity of spasticity was defined as level of associated reaction during exercise. It can be measured by surface integrated EMG levels.Thirty cerebrovascular accident patients (Brunnstrom's stage II-V in upper extremity) performed forward target-touching exercise in sitting position. The exercise was performed with affected shoulder flexion and keeping elbow straight while the associated reaction in same side biceps brachii was monitored by integrated EMG levels and the weight bearing of both feet was measured by 2 weights. The Study Of Atlantoaxial Subluxation And/Or Dislocation, Miin-Her Sheu, Chinn-Dong Chung, Chorng-Sonq Chou, Tao-Chang Hsu
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Neck pain and neck stiffness are among the commonest clinical complaints resulting from atlantoaxial subluxation and dislocation and also most easily lead to misdiagnosis and inadequate management. We defined the clinical characteristics of atlantoaxial subluxation and/or dislocation in 25 patients hospitalized from Jan 1987 to Aug 1989, who were studied retrospectively. The commonest symptoms were found to be neck stiffness, followed by numbness of limbs, neck pain and motor weakness in decreasing frequency. The commonest physical findings were limitation of neck motion, followed by decrease of muscle power, sensory impairment and hyperreflexia in decreasing frequency. Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Education in America has traditionally maintained two basic mandates: one academic, the other social (Commis sion on the Reorganization of Secondary Schools, 1918; Levine and Haselkorn, 1984; Wynne and Walberg, 1985). The first mandate is the education of the young in academic skills that will enable them to lead productive lives. Reading, obviously, is one academic area that schools teach in order to fulfill this responsibility.

Electron Emission From Both Target And Projectile In C⁺ + He Collisions, C. O. Reinhold, D. R. Schultz, Ronald E. Olson, L. H. Toburen, R. (Robert) D. Dubois

The first classical trajectory Monte Carlo calculation of the electronic spectra arising from both target and projectile ionization is presented and compared with experimental measurements of the differential cross section for electrons emitted in C++He collisions. The theoretical treatment is based on an independent-electron model in which the interactions between the electrons are approximated by quantum model potentials. Good agreement is obtained between theory and experiment and structures appearing in the measurements can be explained in terms of the electron emission from either, or both, target and projectile. Tunable Lasers At 1080 Nm For Helium Optical Pumping, Laird D. Schearer, Padetha Tin

We describe the current status of tunable, cw, solid-state lasers in the infrared region of the spectrum which may be tuned to the helium resonance transition near 1083 nm. The principal use for these laser devices is the optical pumping of 3He and 4He atoms via the 23S1 metastable state. The tunable lasers we have examined include Nd3+-doped YAlO3, LaxNd1-xMgAl11O19 (x ∼0.15), Nd:LiNbO3, and Nd:silica glass fibers. Power outputs from these lasers range from a milliwatt to more than 1 W at …
