The importance of good instruction in reading education has long been recognized. What constitutes good instruction and what materials should be used have been the focus of much debate, however, over the years. Two relatively new movements in education have recently added fuel to that debate, namely the movements in critical thinking and whole language. The fundamental purpose of the thinking skills movement is the development of higher level thinking in students. Two largely independent bodies of literature exist on both teaching to promote students' critical and creative thinking abilities and teaching to promote the shift between novice and more expert writing. The author looks closely at both bodies of literature and merges common principles to create an extended curriculum unit designed to teach simultaneously toward expert thinking and expert writing. The unit contains such diverse activities as: 1) an acrostic puzzle; 2) reading articles on themes related to Hamlet; 3) the use of dialectical notebooks; 3) an explicit investigation into the nature of problem solving; 4) using emphatic role-playing to bring …

This study examines the role which the Caffe Cinco played in the development of Lanford Wilson's career. It combines the history of the Caffe Cinco with the analysis of the themes of fantasy and sexuality in four of Wilson's one act plays, showing how he learned and progressed as a playwright during the period when he was associated with the Caffe Cinco. Chapter One provides background information on the economic reasons for the development of the alternative theatre movement in Greenwich Village during the early sixties which became known as "Off Off- Broadway." This study reports the findings of a longitudinal case study of the director of one community museum over an eight-month period utilizing ethnographic research methods. A significant gap exists in research-based museum literature about the administrative functions of museums. To help address this lack of information, this study was conducted to determine the role of the chief administrator of a community museum by describing the daily activities and behaviors of the director while interacting with the people, places, and things of the museum. (2) Do athletic trainers and persons who supervise them share common perceptions regarding the status of performance evaluation in athletic training? The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between school readiness placement and student achievement. A descriptive comparison in first grade of the three student groups placed in kindergarten (K, n = 194), developmental kindergarten (DK, n = 58) or waived to kindergarten (WK, n = 25) was completed.

Math and reading scores on the Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS) were analyzed through an analysis of variance and Tukey/Kramer post hoc analysis. The relationship between level of education of the mother (LEM) and total reading and math ITBS scores was measured with a Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient. …

Optimal stopping of a sequence of random variables is studied, with emphasis on generalized objectives which may be non-monotone functions of EXt, where t is a stopping time, or may even depend on the entire vector (E[X1I{t=1}],⋯, E[XnI{t=n}]), such as the minimax objective to maximize minj{E[XjI{t=j}]}. Convexity is used to establish a prophet inequality and universal bounds for the optimal return, and a method for constructing optimal stopping times for such objectives is given.

Kid goats (newborn) have been used in transplantation protocols to study the techniques and problems of infant human cardiac transplantation. Immunosuppression has been by cyclosporine in both species. However, the pharmacokinetics of cyclosporine (CSA) in both the kid goat and human infant were unknown. Therefore, the pharmacokinetics of CSA were investigated. A single dose study and a long term chronic administration study were undertaken in the goat. Six Nubian goats, ages 60-90 days, were given a single IV dose of CSA, 0.25 mg/kg, over a 10 minute period and 72 hr later an oral cyclosporine dose of 20 mg/kg. The …

A high percentage of American women do not consume the Recommended Dietary Allowance for calcium. Marginal intake of calcium (Ca) in the years when peak bone mass is being formed may have a detrimental impact on bone later in life. This study looked at the effect of low Ca intake and other dietary components on serum and urine values of Ca as well as the response to repletion.

Seventeen free-living females, age 21 to 30 years, were placed on a low Ca diet (/day) for 22 days after a baseline of intake >800 mg/day for at least 6 weeks. Calcibind …

The 5-lipoxygenase metabolites of arachidonic acid such as leukotrienes (LT) B₄ and C₄, are potent mediators of inflammation. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the concentrations of LTB₄ and LTC₄ in human periradicular lesions. Specimens from asymptomatic and symptomatic patients were obtained and immediately frozen in liquid nitrogen. Periradicular tissues from unerupted third molars as well as chronically inflamed gingival tissues were also obtained, frozen and were used as negative and positive controls respectively. The purpose of this study is to provide descriptions of keys to the identification for the dicotyledonous rosettes of eastern Nebraska. Rosettes are defined as herbaceous, terrestrial, acaulescent cluster of leaves. Vegetative descriptions are provided for 113 species pf 56 genera. A key to the species, based on the descriptions, is provided for identification of the taxa. Field collections were made from October 1988 through July 1990, with most specimens collected from August through November 1989. Specimens were pressed and dried using commonly accepted herbarium techniques. Voucher specimens are deposited at the University of Nebraska at Omaha Herbarium (OMA). Rosettes …

The purpose of this exploratory study was to determine the relationship between implementation of Hospice Nursing Standards of Care and satisfaction with nursing care by the hospice family. The study sought to describe the degree of implementation of the Hospice Nursing Standards of Care among three sizes of hospice and whether family satisfaction differed depending on degree of implementation of the Hospice Nursing Standards of Care and hospice size. In 1976 and again in 1986, surveys were completed by participating school districts in the state of Michigan pertaining to the Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP) (developed by the Michigan Department of Education and published annually) testing. The findings of these two surveys are compared in this study.

A comparison of testing practices over a 10-year period can reflect educational changes in Michigan. Dimensions Of Ethnic Assimilation: An Empirical Appraisal Of Gordon's Typology, J. Allen Williams Jr., Suzanne T. Ortega

Researchers often begin by acknowledging that ethnic assimilation is multidimensional, but rarely examine more than one type of assimilation. As a result, studies have used quite disparate indicators of assimilation and have yielded contradictory results. The authors of this study empirically test Milton Gordon’s classic statement on the seven types of assimilation. Results of factor analysis indicate that Gordon’s seven dimensions can be reduced to three- structural, cultural, and receptional.
