An Oncogenic Herpesvirus Encodes Five Novel U Snrnas Called Hsurs, Susanna In-Sun Lee

Marmoset T lymphocytes transformed by herpesvirus saimiri contain the first virally encoded U RNAs (called HSURs) to be identified. HSURs assemble into small nuclear ribonucleoproteins (snRNPs) of low abundance ($<$2 $\times$ 10$\sp4$ copies/cell). They bind proteins with Sm determinants and acquire a 5$\sp\prime$ trimethylguanosine cap structure. The sequences of HSUR 1 (143 nucleotides), HSUR 2 (115 nucleotides), HSUR 3 (76 nucleotides) HSUR 4 (106 nucleotides) and HSUR 5 (111-114 nucleotides) are related to each other but distinct from any previously characterized cellular U RNA. The viral genes encoding the HSURs possess conserved enhancer, promoter and 3$\sp\prime$ end formation signals unique to U RNA genes.The levels of HSURs 1-4 in HeLa transient expression systems are comparable to those found in virally transformed T cells (23%-91%). In contrast, HSUR 5 is expressed at nine-fold higher levels in transfected HeLa cells. HSURs expressed in transfected cells bind proteins with Sm determinants and acquire a 5$\sp\prime$ trimethylguanosine cap structure, as in transformed T cells. HSUR 1 or HSUR 4 particles from transfected HeLa cells migrate between 10S and 15S in velocity gradients, identical to the sedimentation of "monoparticles" produced in virally transformed lymphocytes. We conclude from these transfection experiments that no other herpesvirus saimiri or lymphocyte specific gene products appear to be required for efficient expression of the HSUR genes or for subsequent assembly of the viral U RNAs into snRNP particles.The stretch of similar sequences found on the 5$\sp\prime$ ends HSUR 1, HSUR 2, and HSUR 5 are AU-rich and contain 1-3 repeats of the AUUUA sequence motif. These AU-rich sequences have been identified as mRNA destabilization signals which specify rapid degradation of the transiently expressed mRNAs (Shaw and Kamen, 1986). Because HSURs are estimated to be in 100-1000 fold more abundant than any mRNA, they could stabilize these short-lived transcripts by competitively binding and inhibiting the factor(s) that recognize the mRNA destabilization signal. The resulting overexpression of cellular growth factors could contribute to the transforming ability of herpesvirus saimiri. (Abstract shortened with permission of author.)

The Church Growth movement is relatively young in recognition and development. Even though there have been growing churches since Pentecost, Church Growth is a relatively young area of study. As a discipline, it has come a long way since its birth, and must move through adolescence to adulthood. I think we in the North American Society of Church Growth have a better understanding of the nature and purpose of Church Growth than anyone outside our discipline. Some outside our movement, or perhaps many, do not know who we are or what we do. There is still ignorance about Church Growth.

How Federal Subsidies To The Stafford Loan Program Are Distributed Among Pennsylvania Borrowers, Jerry Sheehan Davis, Laura Greene Knapp

This article describes how federal expenditures for interest benefits, special allowance payments, default claims reinsurance, and administrative cost allowances are distributed among different types of over 61,000 borrowers whose loans came due for repayment during Federal Fiscal Year (FFY) 1989. Changes in factors that affect the amounts of subsidies are examined to show how federal expenditures would be reduced. Subsidy distributions are described for the in-school, grace and repayment periods by students' types of institutions attended, years enrolled, dependency statuses, and family financial circumstances.

Mandatory need analysis for federal financial aid programs determines what a family can reasonably contribute toward higher education costs. In most cases, the need analysis system accurately reflects a family's ability to contribute toward funding a college or university education. A current study has criticized the human services job satisfaction literature for relying solely on information obtained by "closed-ended" questionnaires. Stating that these studies may not accurately reflect the actual conditions under which public welfare employees function, the authors base their criticisms on an analysis of the extemporaneous comments of subjects participating in a national study. Nonetheless, whether or not those who pen comments are representative of the broader population of human service workers remains an open question. The acceleration was influenced by the sharp rise in foreign assets ( net) of the banking system and the increase in credit (net) to the domestic economy. Activity on the capital market w~ mixed and varied during the fourth quarter. The tempo of activity in the new issues market was very high in contrast'-to developments in the secondary market. The number of stockbroking firms increased from 76 in the third quarter to 80 in the fourth quarter of the year. Also, the unit trust scheme was launched during the quarter. Both the primary and secondary segments of the money market were quite active during the quarter. Total money market instruments outstanding increased substantially while the volume of rediscounts also increased appreciably.

The retail price of some selected consumer items in the Lagos Area rose marginally during the fourth quarter of 1990. The report of the survey conducted by CBN revealed that the prices of 37 out of the 69 commodities sampled increased when compared to their levels in the preceding quarter. Overall, the index of consumer prices was 2238 (1975=100), representing an increase of 2. 7 per cent over the level in the preceding quarter and 6.8 per cent when compared to the corresponding quarter of 1989 (see Table 1). The external sector came under more severe pressure during the fourth quarter of 1990. This was attributed to developments in both foreign exchange receipts and outpayments. While foreign exchange receipts declined by 9.1 per cent, outpayments rose by 23.4 per cent from their levels in the third quarter. As a result of these developments, the overall movement in foreign exchange, which showed a slight surplus in the third quarter of 1990 vis-a-vis the fourth quarter of 1989, turned around to a deficit of $390.3 million in the fourth quarter of 1990. This study compared professional values and goals of three levels of occupational therapy students: (1) seniors in baccalaureate programs (n = 337), (2) students in professional master's programs (n = 95), and (3) students in post-professional master's programs (n = 62). Demographic characteristics and factors influencing career choice were also examined.

Significant differences were found among the three student groups for three professional goals: (1) contributing to theory, (2) doing research, and (3) educating occupational therapy students, and four professional values: (1) intellectual stimulation, (2) exciting life, (3) comfortable life, and (4) helpfulness. Effect Of Modified Instructions On Test Performance Of First Graders, Lisa J. Nuss

This study uses a simple experimental design to examine the effect of standardized and adapted instructions on first graders' performance on selected subtests of the Bruininks-Oseretsky Test of Motor Proficiency (Bruininks, 1G78). The mean age of the 20 female and 24 male subjects was 6.77 years. Subjects were randomly assigned to the two experimental conditions. Although the findings for both subtests are not statistically significant at the p<.05 level, they do indicate that motor performance of some populations may not be compromised by altering the wording of the standardized assessment directions. The implications of this study and the need for future research in this area are discussed.

The main objective of this study was to investigate the effect of refining on the brightness of softwood chemithermomechanical (CTMP) and thermomechanical (TMP) pulps. Seven different pulps were refined using a laboratory Valley beater. Brightness, opacity, tensile index, TEA, and fines content of these pulps were determined at four different freeness levels. Scattering (s) and absorption (k) coefficients of these pulps were calculated. One-way analyses of variance (ANOVA) were applied to determine the significance of change in brightness.

Changes in s-values were significantly affected by fiber morphology of different wood species. Refining increased the k-values of the pulps. When the …
