Evaluation Of Geocomposite Pavement Panel Drains Installed In A Sand Backfill Under Revised Installation Specification, L. John Fleckenstein, David L. Allen

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Prior to 1989, highway edge drains were backfilled with the existing trench material and dynamically compacted with a tamping shoe. The net result was damage to the inner core of the edge drain.

In response to these problems the installation specification was revised in 1989 to insure the integrity of the drainage system. The revised method of installation consisted of moving the panel to the shoulder side of the trench and then flushing a sand slurry into the trench for backfill. Flushing the sand eliminates the need for mechanical compaction.

The principal objective of the research effort was to develop historical performance data for bituminous sandstone pavements and bituminous limestone pavements relative to visual distress, pavement rutting characteristics, and structural condition using deflection measurements. Data relative to Road Rater deflections, pavement rutting, condition ratings based on subjective visual surveys and objective data such as skid resistance and rideability, were collected and analyzed during the course of the study and reported herein for the routes investigated.

The problem of this study was to develop a model flowchart that incorporates the functions traditionally performed by the Engineering, Planning, and Mock-up segments of a specific aircraft manufacturing company into a co-located, multi-organizational, interactive group. The function of the group, termed the Product Definition Group in this study, was to design the dimensions of, and schedule the installation of, fuselage insulation blankets for commercial aircraft.

Security And Involvement In The Parent-Adolescent Relationship, Susan J. Thompson

The purpose of this study was the investigation of the dynamics which occur in relationships between parents and their adolescent children. Two hundred and eighty-four adolescents from local high schools were surveyed using the Acquaintance Description Form for Adolescents. They were also asked to take home the Parental Response Questionnaire for their parents to complete. Of these, responses were received from one hundred and seven parents.

Previous research has suggested that differences exist between relationships maintained by adolescent children and their mothers and fathers, particularly on the variables of security and involvement. Fathers have traditionally been described as less secure …

The Relationship Between The Mbti And A Values Conflict Resolution, Marti B. George

This study investigated the relationship between Jungian type personality dimensions and an intrapersonal values conflict resolution. Seventy subjects filled out the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) which assesses the sixteen Jungian personality types. Subjects returned in approximately two weeks to complete the Values Conflict Resolution Assessment (VCRA) which assesses the degree of their resolution about a particular values conflict. It was hypothesized that the thinking-feeling function of mind would positively correlate with scores on the Ethical-Emotional subscale and negatively correlate with scores on the Rational-Behavioral subscale of the VCRA. The Nigerian economy was in a deplorable state prior to the introduction of various policy and structural reforms in 1986. During the period of oil boom (1973-80), the production and consumption patterns in the country became import- dependent. With the collapse of oil prices in mid-1981, a foreign exchange crisis emerged. Foreign exchange earnings declined from US $25.9 billion in 1980 to $7.2 billion in 1986 with adverse consequences for the economy. Although the 1988 survey on Foreign Private Investment showed that there was an increase in the net capital inflow through the Nigerian/foreign jointly-owned companies, a closer look revealed that the 22 per cent increase in the level of the gross inflow of capital over the 1987 level was merely due to naira exchange rate depreciation of 222 per cent between December 1987 and December 1988. The industrial sector recorded modest improvement in the fourth quarter of 1990. At 262.8 (1972=100), the index of industrial production showed increases of 7.8 and 4.2 per cent over the levels in the third quarter of 1990 and the fourth quarter of 1989, respectively. The improvement was attributed largely to illcreases of 7.2 and 3.6 per cent in mining and manufacturing output, respectively. Electricity consumption index, on the other hand, fel] below the level in the corresponding quarter of the previous year by 1.7 per cent.

We have implemented a Prolog execution engine for the shared-database language Swarm extended with visualization capabilities. We call this execution engine SwarmExec. SwarmExec runs on a Macintosh Iifx under Advanced A.I. Systems' Prolog (AAIS) and communicates over an Ethernet connection with a Silicon Graphics Personal Iris which serves as a graphical engine and renders the visualizations. This paper describes the major design elements of SwarmExec. A basic familiarity with Swarm and its visualization extensions is assumed; the interested reader is referred to the referenced papers.

Probabilistic Analysis Of Random Clone Restriction Mapping, Laurie J. Barnett

Several current DNA mapping projects are based on detection of overlaps between cloned DNA molecules. This thesis places the problem of overlap detection in a probabilistic framework by deriving, for each of the relevant overlap types, expressions for the probability that a postulated overlap is correct. In addition, computationally feasible approximations for the probability expressions are developed. These expressions have been implemented and, using the implementations, the validity of both the original and the approximated probability expressions is verified.

Physics and Biophysics: Faculty Scholarship

A simple, versatile device for dispersing micrometer‐ and submicrometer-sized particles in vacuum is described. The source allows control of particle size (0.5 μm≤l≤200 μm) and particle flux density up to roughly 107 cm−2 s−1. Several types of microparticles were successfully dispersed.
