Return On The Federal Investment In Student Financial Aid: An Assessment For The High School Class Of 1972, Edward P. St. John, Charles L. Masten

Journal of Student Financial Aid

It can be argued that the public investment in student financial aid should be evaluated based on the tax revenue returns that result from this investment. While this is not the only basis on which student aid can be justified in the budget process, this approach does have merit, especially given the large federal deficit. This article develops a model for estimating the tax revenue returns from gains in educational attainment that are attributable to student financial aid. This study examines the impact of student aid on access and persistence. It is estimated that the net present value of the …

Ethnographic methods were used to examine the nurse-patient interaction for the purpose of developing descriptive and explanatory theory of patient satisfaction based on patients' perceptions regarding their nurses' interpersonal skills. A private acute care hospital was the setting for 40 patients and 12 nurses who were study participants. Four processes provided the framework for the themes that emerged: "translating," "getting to know you," "establishing trust," and "going the extra mile." I labeled the action of nurses informing, explaining, instructing, and teaching patients the translation process. Informing and explaining were described by both patients and nurses as very important to the …

Judge Harry T. Edwards has written a lucid and seemingly logical plea for the judiciary to be granted exclusive self-regulation over all matters of judicial misconduct that fall short of crimes or impeachable offenses. His essay demonstrates the seriousness with which he regards misconduct that would bring shame to the federal judiciary. He believes that the judiciary as a whole is the best institution to ascertain and take measures against individual aberrant judges who are guilty of various forms of misconduct, and I have no doubt of the sincerity of his belief. Effects Of Age, Neuropsychological Impairment, And Medication On Regional Cerebral Blood Flow In Schizophrenia And Major Affective Disorder, Perry C. Goldstein, Gregory G. Brown, Andrew Marcus, James R. Ewing

Reports of abnormalities of regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) in patients with schizophrenia and major affective disorder are contradictory. To gain a better understanding of the possible sources of these contradictions, the rCBF and neuropsychological functioning of 15 schizophrenics, 15 patients with major affective disorder, and 15 age-matched controls were studied. No group differences in overall rCBF, percent frontal devialion in flow, or rCBF asymmetries were observed. Both overall rCBF and percent frontal deviation of rCBF were reduced with greater age and with increasing neuropsychological impairment. Dosage of neuroleptic medication was associated with reduced whole brain flow, not with percent …

Recent research suggests that the most potent feature of the Type A behavior pattern for prospectively predicting cardiac disease is aggravation, irritation, anger, and impatience (AIAI). The present study examines psychometric properties of a new AIAI measure and its relationship to the severity of coronary artery disease (CAD). Subjects included 61 males undergoing coronary angiography. Comparisons were made of mean psychometric scores across groupings, defined by number of vessels occluded. These comparisons showed that the normal or subclinically occluded coronary angiographic group had high levels of depression and anxiety. Patients with narcolepsy have more psychiatric symptoms than normal controls as measured by psychometric tests. However, it is unclear whether these findings are specific to narcolepsy, as some studies have suggested, or related to excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) or to chronic illness. We compared a group of 56 narcoleptics to age- and sex-matched controls with EDS. A group of 48 individuals with normal sleep architecture was also used as an additional control group. Both the narcoleptic group and the EDS-control group had significantly greater scores on Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory scales hut were not different from each other. Our data …

Rectal Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma: A Clinicopathologic Study And Review, Cary A. Gottlieb, Eyal Meiri, Koichi Maeda

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

A total of 11 patients with lymphomatous involvement of the rectum were seen at Henry Ford Hospital between 1964 and 1987. Eight of these patients had primary rectal lymphoma and three had secondary rectal lymphoma. These patients' clinical presentation and course as well as pathological findings are described and compared with cases previously reported. As identified in ours and others' series, rectal lymphomas are associated with the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome and tend to have a B-cell phenotype.

Lipohyperplasia of the ileocecal valve is a fairly common entity that occasionally behaves as an intestinal tumor, causing obstruction, sometimes with intussusception, or bleeding, which may be acute or chronic. Most often occurring in middle-aged or elderly women, it may be mistaken clinically and radiologically for carcinoma or other neoplasms. Its differentiation is best made by endoscopy, confirmed if possible by biopsy. Differentiation is important, as the treatment is a limited ileal and cecal resection, instead of a blind hemicolectomy. A recent study suggests possible associations with other medical conditions. Unpinning Of Gaas Surface Fermi Level By 200 Degrees C Molecular Beam Epitaxial Layer, David C. Look, C. E. Stutz, K. R. Evans

Previous attempts to passivate the n‐type (100)GaAs surface have significantly reduced only the surface recombination centers, but not the surface acceptors which pin the Fermi level. Here we show that a 100 Å molecular beam epitaxial layer grown at 200 °C reduces the effective surface potential energy − eϕs from 0.70 to 0.17 eV, nearly eliminates light sensitivity, and permits nonalloyed ohmic contacts. After a 10 min, 450 °C anneal, − eϕs increases only to 0.22 eV.

The effectiveness of teaching nonverbal communication skills to undergraduate students in an occupational therapy curriculum at Western Michigan University was explored by testing students just entering the program and students leaving the campus for their fieldwork experiences. A control group was made up of undergraduate students from curricula that did not purposely teach sensitivity to nonverbal cues. The 50 subjects were tested using the Profile of Nonverbal Sensitivity (PONS; Rosenthal, Hall, DiMatteo, Rogers, & Archer, 1979). Comparisons were made between PONS scores and the subject's area of study, length of time in the program, gender and age. Results showed that …

Estimated breeding value (EBV) was calculated based on either individual phenotype (SP), an index of individual phenotype and full- and half-sib family averages (SI) or Best Linear Unbiased Prediction (BLUP). Calculations were done with correct data or data with 5, 10, 15 or 20% of the records per generation containing pedigree errors. Traits considered were litter size (LS), backfat (BF) and average daily gain (ADG). When data were correct, BLUP resulted in an advantage in expected genetic gain over SP of 22, 7.2 or 30.8% for LS, BF and ADG, respectively, and over SI of 9.6, 3.8 or 21.4%. When …

In this note a method for computing approximations by polytopes of the solution set [see pdf for notation] of a system of convex inequalities is presented. It is shown that such approximations can be determined by an algorithm which converges in finitely many steps when the solution set of the given system of inequalities is bounded. In this paper we study the behavior of a class of iterative algorithms for solving feasibility problems, that is finite systems of inequalities [see pdf for notation], where each [see pdf for notation] is a locally Lipschitz functional on a Hilbert space X. We show that, under quite mild conditions, the algorithms studied in this note, if converge, then they approximate a solution of the feasibility given problem, provided that the feasibility problem is consistent.
