Effects Of Three Organizational Policies On Individuals’ Attitudes About Drug Testing, Alan Walker

The consensus of recent literature appears to be that drug testing is both legal and valid. However, a testing program can meet legal and technical criteria and still fail to meet organizational objectives because one vital component has been left out – employees’ attitudes. The present study uses data from 148 college juniors and seniors to assess the effects of three hypothetical drug testing policies: (a) consequences of detected drug use (termination vs. rehabilitation), (b) timing of the program (expected interval vs. random interval vs. reasonable cause), and (c) business purpose (weak vs. strong) on attitudes toward drug testing. Since 1884, the courts have embraced and applied the doctrine of employment-at-will which states that employers may terminate their employees, with or without cause or notice, at any time. Recently, the courts have recognized exceptions to this doctrine. In order to avoid these exceptions, lawyers and human resource specialists have suggested that employment materials should explicitly state that all employment is at-will. However, while stating an employment-at-will policy may protect employers' rights to terminate at-will, little is known about the consequences of adopting these measures with respect to applicant and employee attitudes.

The misfit and the dream of escape are popular motifs in American literature, particularly in the literature of the South. Critical studies of works employing these themes have largely ignored the connection between the two. The Southern misfit – the Southerner who fails to or refuses to conform to his society’s strict standards – often dreams of escaping the restrictions of the South for some Northern “promised land.” In the works of two Georgia writers, Carson McCullers and Flannery O’Connor, the related themes receive different treatments. Ninety-two consecutive patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) were studied before and six weeks after treatment with either nasal continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) or uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) (n = 46 per group). Assignment of patients to treatment was based on clinical considerations and patient preference. Patients were assessed by nocturnal polysomnography and performance on the Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT) the following day. Before treatment, the CPAP and UPPP groups did not differ in sleep-related respiratory disturbance, oxygenation during sleep, fragmentation of sleep, or the level of excessive daytime sleepiness indicated by the MSLT. We have recently isolated an abundant cytosolic protein from human T-cells which specifically binds the immunosuppressive agent, FK-506. The FK-506-binding protein (FKBP) is a member of a novel class of proteins possessing peptidyl-prolyl cis-trans isomerase activity. These proteins are believed to play an important role in accelerating the rate at which proteins fold into their native conformations. In the present study, we demonstrate that FKBP is not a lymphoid-specific protein, but is widely distributed and phylogenically conserved. FKBP, purified from three sources (a human T-lymphocyte cell line JURKAT, bovine calf thymus, and Saccharomyces cerevisiae) exhibit identical molecular weights, immunological cross-reactivities, …

The purpose of this descriptive correlational study was to determine the relationship between health locus of control and spiritual well-being of participants in Narcotics Anonymous .

Erickson, Tomlin, and Swain's (1983) Modeling and Role- Modeling provided the conceptual framework. The sample was composed of 20 men and women who were participants in Narcotics Anonymous and 18 years and older. Data were collected by a gatekeeper to maintain anonymity. Three questionnaires were used: Multidimensional Health Locus of Control Scale, Spiritual Well-Being Scale, and a Demographic Data Sheet.
