The presence of an extensive network of solution channels in the fractured carbonate bedrock and a thin permeable regolith in northwest Arkansas makes aquifers in this region susceptible to contamination. Because of these conditions, there is concern about nitrate contamination of the ground water from land applied animal wastes, commercial fertilizers, rural septic systems and municipal sewage systems. In response to these concerns a survey was conducted of the nitrate concentration in rural water wells in the carbonate aquifers of a 420 mi2 area of northern Madison county during "wet" and "dry" seasons in 1990. The abundance of bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) for many coastal areas of the United States Gulf of Mexico is poorly known. During spring and fall 1987, we used aircraft and strip transects to estimate bottlenose dolphin abundance within 37 km of the U.S. Gulf shore. Greatest estimated dolphin densities were in the north-central Gulf (spring), northern Florida (fall) and Louisiana study areas (fall) (about 0.30 dolphins / km2). We estimated the coastal U.S. Gulf population of bottlenose dolphins to be 16,892 ± 3,628 (95% Cl) and 16,089 ± 3,338 in spring and fall, respectively. Bottlenose dolphins …

Reproductive Status, Sex Ratios And Morphometrics Of The Slipper Lobster Scyllarides Nodifer (Stimpson) (Decapoda: Scyllaridae) In The Northeastern Gulf Of Mexico, C.W. Hardwick Jr., G.B. Cline

Morphometric data on the slipper lobster, Scyllarides nodifer, was determined by assessing the catch of a commercial vessel trawling in the northeast Gulf of Mexico on a 3-day cruise In April, 1985. Over 900 lobsters were captured during 17 trawls In two well-established areas. Reproductive status, male:female ratios and the relationship between carapace length and weight were determined. Forty-six percent of the lobsters captured were determined. Forty-slx percent of the lobsters captured were female. A high percentage of these females were ovigerous, extending the previously reported reproductive season of this species. Mean weight of the lobsters was 430.5 g …

An all-pairs problem is a computation on every possible subset consisting of two elements chosen from a set of n elements. N-body simulation and Householder reduction are all-pairs problems. The paper defines the all-pairs problem concisely by means of precedence matrices and derives a parallel algorithm. The algorithm is presented in both coarse-grain and medium-grain form. The all-pairs paradigm is illustrated by a pipeline for Householder reduction of a matrix to triangular form.

Analyzing Images Containing Multiple Sparse Patterns With Neural Networks, Rangachari Anand, Kishan Mehrotra, Chilukuri K. Mohan, Sanjay Ranka
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - Technical Reports
We have addressed the problem of analyzing images containing multiple sparse overlapped patterns. This problem arises naturally when analyzing the composition of organic macromolecules using data gathered from their NMR spectra. Using a neural network approach, we have obtained excellent results in using NMR data to analyze the presence of amino acids in protein molecules. We have achieved high correct classification percentages (about 87%) for images containing as many as five substantially distorted overlapping patterns.
