Lyme Disease, John U. Thomson, B. H. Kantack
SDSU Extension Extra Archives
Epidemiologists and other experts in the field of infectious disease feel that, in the absence of AIDS, Lyme disease would be the disease of the decade. Because it is spread from animals to humans under natural conditions, people working in agriculture and in regions with high populations of dogs, cats, horses, and cattle, need to be aware of this disease (1,2,3).

The extent and progression of exposure to feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) virus in the cheetah, Acinonyx jubatus, was monitored by a world-wide serological survey with indirect fluorescent antibody titers to coronavirus. The indirect fluorescent antibody assay was validated by Western blots, which showed that all indirect fluorescent antibody-positive cheetah sera detected both domestic cat and cheetah coronavirus structural proteins. There was a poor correlation between indirect fluorescent antibody results and the presence of coronaviruslike particles in cheetah feces, suggesting that electron microscopic detection of shed particles may not be an easily interpreted diagnostic parameter for FIP disease. Low, but …
The Effect Of Seasonal Cattle Grazing On California Bighorn Sheep Habitat Use, Melanie J. Steinkamp
The Effect Of Seasonal Cattle Grazing On California Bighorn Sheep Habitat Use, Melanie J. Steinkamp
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The effect of seasonal cattle grazing on a newly reintroduced population of California bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis californiana) in Big Cottonwood Canyon, Idaho, was studied. The hypothesis that bighorn sheep avoid cattle was tested. The issue of avoidance between bighorn sheep and livestock is arguable. Some studies have found that bighorn sheep avoid cattle while others have found no response of bighorn sheep to cattle.
Evidence was found to document the avoidance of cattle by bighorn sheep. The size of the bighorn's home range and core area decreased with the movement of cattle into areas of high bighorn …

Immunosuppression By Aflatoxin B1 In C57bl/6 Mice And Its Relationship With Neuroendocrine Mechanisms, Yasuhiko Hatori
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), a secondary metabolite of Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus parasiticus, is known for its potent carcinogenicity and immunosuppressive effects. It is also known that AFB1 toxicity appears in different degrees in different animal species and strains.
The present study was performed to reveal the involvement of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal gland (HPA) axis in the immunosuppressive effects of AFB1 on C57BL/6 mice. Splenic lymphocytes were assayed to investigate their phenotyping using flow cytometry, proliferative response against mitogen and allogenic lymphocytes, cytolytic cell activity, and IL-2 production. In addition, antibody-mediated immunocompetence was checked using sheep …

South Dakota Farm And Home Research, South Dakota State University
South Dakota Farm and Home Research: 1949 -1998
Director's comments [p] 2
LISA: Public policy: "Alternative" farmers call for greater flexibility in crop acreage requirements and for federal and state policies with greater conservation and environmental components. These concepts are supported by a broad base of South Dakota farmers and ranchers. [p] 3
LISA: Solis and yields Crop and tillage may have more impaci on soil and its water than the farming system, but environment overrides all. In drought, the best system was the alternate (low input) system; returns were about five times higher than from conventional systems. [p] 7
LISA: In the 'real world' There are common …

North Carolina's New Aids Discrimination Protection: Who Do They Think They're Fooling?, Angela Sue Bullard
Campbell Law Review
This Comment's primary purpose is to examine the substantive provisions of the 1989 amendments to the NCCDA. First, the Comment briefly examines background information, including: (1) medical and statistical facts about AIDS and related infections; (2) the causes, history and significance of AIDS discrimination; and (3) pre-existing or alternate protections available to persons discriminated against on the basis of AIDS, HIV or ARC. Second, the Comment proceeds with a provision-by-provision evaluation of the NCCDA amendments. It analyzes the amendments in light of the above mentioned background information, as well as existing authority on the various issues addressed by the amendments. …

UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice
The following opinion reflects my dissatisfaction with current equal protection and privacy doctrine analysis, especially in the area of reproduction. Although this particular fact pattern was created for the classroom, it is far from "hypothetical." Women's reproductive rights are being increasingly curtailed in the name of fetal rights. Indeed, fetal rights legislation has resulted in such intrusive control over women's lives that one cannot help but wonder whether this control over women via their reproductive abilities is the masked intention of the proponents of these laws. How much better off the world would be if the Supreme Court produced opinions …

Survey Of Virginia Dental Practices To Determine Compliance With The Standards Of Risk Management Theory, Joanne Schade Boyce
Survey Of Virginia Dental Practices To Determine Compliance With The Standards Of Risk Management Theory, Joanne Schade Boyce
Dental Hygiene Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this survey was to determine selected areas of risk in dental practices within the Commonwealth of Virginia. A self-designed, 51 item questionnaire was sent to a random sample of 300 Virginia dentists to examine their risk management procedures in: (1) the medical record and related documentation, (2) infection control, (3) identification and classification of periodontally involved patients, (4) obtaining informed consent, and (5) emergency protocols. Data from 62% of the dentists were analyzed via the chi-square goodness of fit test, frequency and percentage of responses. Results suggest that Virginia dental practitioners are practicing some of the recommended …

Plague In The U.S.: Present And Future, Allan M. Barnes
Plague In The U.S.: Present And Future, Allan M. Barnes
Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 14th (1990)
An increasing trend in the frequency of human bubonic plague cases in the United States, the principal sources of human infection, and emerging control techniques are described. Development of an integrated control program involving public health education, citizen participation in plague surveillance, and insecticidal control of flea vectors in response to evidence of plague and potential human exposure substantially reduced human plague cases in a Bernalillo County, New Mexico, hyperendemic plague area. Permethrin 0.5% dust (Pyraperm 455) applied at a rate of 7 g per burrow was found to provide effective control of flea vectors for at least 6 weeks.

Rabies Control For Urban Foxes, Skunks, And Raccoons, Richard C. Rosatte, Michael J. Power, Charles D. Macinnes, Kenneth F. Lawson
Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 14th (1990)
Rabies is currently enzootic in many cities of southern Ontario. The Ministry of Natural Resources is utilizing two different tactics for the control of rabies in urban wildlife rabies vectors-oral immunization with baits (foxes) and vaccination by injection following live-capture (skunks and raccoons). Between 47 and 79% of the skunks and 61 and 76% of the raccoons were captured and vaccinated (Imrab) in a 60-km2 urban area of Metropolitan Toronto during 1987, 1989. Only three cases of rabies in skunks have been reported since control began in 1987. Population increases of 120% for skunks and 40% for raccoons were noted …
Reo-Like Virus In White Shrimp Penaeus Vannamei (Crustacea: Decapoda): Co-Occurrence With Baculovirus Penaei In Experimental Infections, Rena M. Krol, William E. Hawkins, Robin M. Overstreet
Reo-Like Virus In White Shrimp Penaeus Vannamei (Crustacea: Decapoda): Co-Occurrence With Baculovirus Penaei In Experimental Infections, Rena M. Krol, William E. Hawkins, Robin M. Overstreet
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
A virus, tentatively identified as reo-like, occurred concurrently with experimentally-induced Baculovirus penaei (BP) infection in cultured white shrimp larvae Penaeus vannamei. Each shrimp with a reo-like viral infection also had a BP infection, but not all BP-infected shrimp had a reo-like infection. Both viruses occurred in the same tissues and occasionally withln the same cell. The reolike virus developed in epithelial cells of the anterior midgut and in reserve- and fibrillar-cells of the hepatopancreas. The paraspherical and non-enveloped reo-like virions (ca. 50 nm diam.) occurred as unordered aggregates in the cell cytoplasm. Their etiology has not been determined. Reo-like …
