Cuticular Ridge Pattern In Ostertagia Gruehneri And Ostertagia Arctica (Nematoda: Trichostrongyloidea) From Caribou, Rangifer Tarandus, J. Ralph Lichtenfels, P. A. Pilitt, M. Fruetel
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
Two species of medium stomach worms are common parasites of the caribou, Rangifer tarandus. The two species, Ostertagia gruehneri Skrjabin, 1929, and O. arctica Mitzkewitzsch, 1929, differ so markedly in morphology of the spicules and genital cone that many nematode systematists place them in different genera. Recent studies of similar pairs of species parasitic in other ruminants have provided evidence that such pairs of species may be morphotypes of one species. The two species from caribou are redescribed with emphasis on the pattern of surface cuticular ridges and the structure of the esophagus, characters considered useful for distinguishing species …

Some Helminth Parasites Of Dunlin (Calidris Alpina) And Western Willet (Catoptrophorus Semipalmatus Inornatus) From California, Hilda Lei Ching
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
Dunlins and western willets were collected on their winter feeding grounds at Bodega Bay and Bolinas Lagoon, California, during 1986. Six digeneans, eight cestodes, two acanthocephalans, and a new nematode were found in dunlins. Seven digeneans, two cestodes, one acanthocephalan, and the new nematode were found in western willets; four helminths including the new roundworm were common to dunlins. Thominx cecumitis sp. n. differs from other capillarid nematodes with a spinous spicule-sheath in having a short, globular vulvar appendage, peanut-shapcd eggs, a cuticular ball at the posterior tip of the body, narrow lateral alae, and a cuticular genital bursa.

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
Ten populations of Xiphinema americanum sensu lato (S. l.)from California and two from the eastern United States were studied in a morphometric comparison. Morphometrics were generated by descriptive statistics and a stepwise discriminant analysis (SDA) from nine California field populations, and voucher specimens from a previous California vector study (Hoy, Mircetich & Lownsbery, 1984); identifed as X. californicum. AIso included were greenhouse populations of X. americanum Cobb, 1913 sensu stricto (s. s.) from New York (N.Y.) and X. rivesi Dalmasso, 1969 from Pennsylvania (Pa). SDA canonical plots of individual specimens showed the X. rivesi population …

Synthetic Peptide Analyses Of The Surface Glycoproteins Of Equine Infectious Anemia Virus., Judith Marchand Ball
Synthetic Peptide Analyses Of The Surface Glycoproteins Of Equine Infectious Anemia Virus., Judith Marchand Ball
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Previous investigations have characterized both the genomic and antigenic variations in equine infectious anemia virus (EIAV) surface glycoproteins that arise during replication of the virus. DNA sequence analyses have defined regions of conserved and variable sequences localized in the EIAV envelope glycoproteins. These studies indicate that EIAV persistence and periodicity of clinical disease result from the relatively rapid evolution of antigenic variants which allows the virus to temporarily circumvent the host immune response. The primary objective of this work is the complete characterization of the immunogenic components of the EIAV env-encoded surface unit (SU) and transmembrane (TM) glycoproteins. These surface …

Identification Of Vibrio Anguillarum And Vibrio Ordalii By A Monoclonal Antibody Coagglutination Assay., Zhongshi Wang
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Vibrio anguillarum exhibits species-specific antigens on the protein core of the polar flagellum (H) and H-determinants which are expressed by heterologous Vibrio species. Monoclonal antibody (MAb) which reacted with flagella core protein by ELISA were affinity purified from protein A-sepharose. Staphylococcus aureus Cowan 1 cells armed with anti-H MAb coagglutinated each of the 10 V. anguillarum O-antigen serovars within 1 to 2 minutes, as well as V. ordalii isolates. These findings suggest these two vibrios express similar if not identical species-specific H-determinants. The anti-H reagent did not coagglutinate 20 heterologous Vibrio species. MAb generated against LPS, extracted from V. anguillarum …
Brugia Pahangi: Effects Of Maternal Filariasis On The Responses Of Their Progeny To Homologous Infection., Stephen Carl Bosshardt
Brugia Pahangi: Effects Of Maternal Filariasis On The Responses Of Their Progeny To Homologous Infection., Stephen Carl Bosshardt
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The effects of in utero and neonatal exposure to maternal Brugia pahangi infections on the development of homologous infections, immune responses, and pathologic lesions was studied in age-matched progeny of infected and uninfected female jirds. High IgG antibody titers to B. pahangi antigens were present in the sera of progeny from infected mothers. These neonatal titers to homologous antigens were shown to be of maternal origin, and did not alter the cellular responses of uninfected progeny as measured by in vitro antigen-stimulated blastogenesis and in vivo pulmonary granulomatous inflammatory responses to antigen-coated beads. Studies were conducted to measure age-related differences …

A Phase Ii Trial Of Murine Monoclonal Antibody 17-1a And Interferon-Γ: Clinical And Immunological Data, Mansoor Saleh, Albert Lobuglio, Richard Wheeler, Kimberly Rogers, Amy Haynes, Jeannette Lee, M B. Khazaeli
Haematology and Oncology, East Africa
A group of 15 patients with metastatic colorectal adenocarcinoma received a combination of interferon γ (0.1 mg/m2, days 1–15) and the murine monoclonal antibody 17-1A (400 mg, days 5, 7, 9 and 12). The treatment was tolerated with minimal toxicity. Of the 14 evaluable patients, 13 developed human antibody to murine 17-1A, with 11 patients demonstrating antibody to the variable region of 17-1A (anti-idiotype). Antibody to the variable region was inhibited by 17-1A but not by mouse immunoglobulin. Sera from patients with substantial anti-idiotype reactivity were capable of inhibiting the binding of murine 17-1A to antigen expressing LS174-T …

Neither Motility Nor Chemotaxis Plays A Role In The Ability Of Escherichia Coli F-18 To Colonize The Streptomycin-Treated Mouse Large Intestine, Beth A. Mccormick, David C. Laux, Paul S. Cohen
Past Departments Faculty Publications (CELS)
Escherichia coli F-18, isolated from the feces of a healthy human in 1977, is an excellent colonizer of the streptomycin-treated mouse large intestine and displays normal motility and chemotaxis ability. A chemotaxis-defective derivative of E. coli F-18, E, coli F-18 CheA-, and a nonflagellated derivative, E. coli F-18 Fla-, were constructed. These strains were found to colonize the streptomycin-treated mouse large intestine as well as E. coli F-18 when mice were fed both E. coli F-18 and either the CheA- or Fla- derivative at high levels (1010 CFU of each strain per mouse) …

The Impact Of Feeding Methods On Exclusion From Child Care For Infants Under Six Months Of Age, Elizabeth G. Jones Edd, Mph, Rd
The Impact Of Feeding Methods On Exclusion From Child Care For Infants Under Six Months Of Age, Elizabeth G. Jones Edd, Mph, Rd
Dissertations
The increasing numbers of women entering the work force have created a greater need for accessible, quality, and affordable child care. Concurrently there is rising concern about the transmission of infection in child care settings. There is evidence, but no consensus, that breastfeeding may offer protection from infection, especially during the first months of life. However, employed/student mothers report that efforts to maintain breastfeeding are not well supported at the work/school site. The purpose of this investigation was to examine the impact of infant feeding methods on the exclusion rate due to illness among infants less than six months of …
