Popular Culture’S Revolt Against The Normalizing Consequences Of Tradition, Pat Rafferty Jan 1990

Popular Culture’S Revolt Against The Normalizing Consequences Of Tradition, Pat Rafferty

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

For several years there has been an ongoing debate regarding whether street art (graffiti) qualifies as art or could be more aptly described as vandalism. While this paper does not claim to resolve the issue, a discussion of the corollary of that - the extent to which we are willing to tolerate divergence from normative expectations, lends insight into the topic of the means and limitations of what is representable as art.

Integrated Social Studies Curriculum For The Combined Third, Fourth, And Fifth Grade Classroom, Kenneth Irwin Ecker Jan 1990

Integrated Social Studies Curriculum For The Combined Third, Fourth, And Fifth Grade Classroom, Kenneth Irwin Ecker

All Graduate Projects

A social studies curriculum was developed for use in a multi-grade classroom. The curriculum incorporates the learning objectives from each of the three grade levels in a format which can be presented simultaneously to students in all three grades, while directing a separate focus for each grade. The unique qualities and limitations of the multi-grade classroom were considered, and implications for the teacher are discussed. An informal pilot study assessed the useability and effectiveness of the curriculum.

Concluding Reflections, John Finnis Jan 1990

Concluding Reflections, John Finnis

Cleveland State Law Review

A symposium to which one person contributes three extended papers is no unmixed pleasure for readers. This third contribution of mine will interest only those curious to see my response to other symposiasts' comments on my earlier efforts (in the symposium and elsewhere). To enable this curiosity to be satisfied as costlessly as possible, I divide these concluding reflections by authors rather than themes, though with priorities suggested by themes rather than authors.

The Concept Of The Self In Legal Culture, Lawrence M. Friedman Jan 1990

The Concept Of The Self In Legal Culture, Lawrence M. Friedman

Cleveland State Law Review

This essay is an exploration in the domain of legal culture, or, in other words, an exploration of those social ideas and concepts that shape and underpin the law.' Specifically, it is about the concept of the individual, or the self, and how this concept makes its mark on the legal order. The basic theme of this essay can be wrapped up in one small package: society, and law, has moved in the direction of expressive individualism over the last century or so, especially in the last few decades. Whatever the sources of this change "outside" the legal system, its …

Creativity And Political Identification In The Work Of Herbert Read, David Thistlewood Jan 1990

Creativity And Political Identification In The Work Of Herbert Read, David Thistlewood

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

The idea of a class conflict, in which a powerful minority subjugates the majority among other ways by depriving it of any sense of self-esteem deriving from worthwhile, original work - that is, by suppressing its creativity - was something Herbert Read acquired through his youthful involvement in the late stages of the Arts and Crafts Movement. It was a premise he was never seriously to question, as was the corresponding idea that to assert one's right to be creative was to engage in a political act. He was certain that artistic conventions were the means of suppression, and that …

Art Education And The Promotion Of Intercultural Understanding, F. Graeme Chalmers Jan 1990

Art Education And The Promotion Of Intercultural Understanding, F. Graeme Chalmers

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

The comparative study of art, of response to art, and the production of art forms which matter can help us to understand each other. Art has always been a powerful force in shaping our vision of the world. We need to understand each other's vision and keep our own alive. We need to combat any art-for-art's-sake attitudes that may be entrenched in schools because it is a rather peculiar notion of art and one that deters a full understanding of the role of art in a variety of contexts and cultures. In contrast, art educators who view art as a …

The Limits Of Linear Modes Of Inquiry Into Naturalistic World-Views: A Case Study Of Cherokee Culture, Karen L. Sorensen, Charles G. Wieder Jan 1990

The Limits Of Linear Modes Of Inquiry Into Naturalistic World-Views: A Case Study Of Cherokee Culture, Karen L. Sorensen, Charles G. Wieder

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

We begin with the cultural-anthropological assumption that a people’s world-view is based in concepts of time and process, and is reflected in the ceremonies, customs, rituals, and other traditional patterns of social conduct within the society. In a case study of the Native American Cherokee, linear modes of inquiry, characteristic of Western science, are shown to be limited in their capacity to examine and appreciate these dimensions of culture in pre-literate societies. It is suggested that those aspects of our own culture which are grounded in aesthetic value may also be relatively inaccessible for the same reason. By examining meanings …

Our Neighbours’ Understanding Of Art: A Class Field Study, Patricia Stuhr, Jeffrey Leptak Jan 1990

Our Neighbours’ Understanding Of Art: A Class Field Study, Patricia Stuhr, Jeffrey Leptak

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

Most people believe that taste in art is highly individual, that one person’s opinion is as good as another. However, the literature on art and art education usually reflects the assumptions and values of the established authorities –art critics, historians, and aesthetic philosophers. It is assumed that, "With varying degrees of success, schools and colleges pass on a set of cultural values which reflect the dominant culture of society ... '" Jones, p. 135). Other institutions, such as museums, also promote these values. However, Johnson's study of socialization in art museum tours found that docents and visitors both emphasized the …

[Review Of] Jack Kugelmass, Ed. Between Two Worlds: Ethnographic Essays On American Jewry, David M. Gradwohl Jan 1990

[Review Of] Jack Kugelmass, Ed. Between Two Worlds: Ethnographic Essays On American Jewry, David M. Gradwohl

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

This volume contains twelve varied, academically insightful, and often just plain entertaining chapters, along with the editor's lengthy and instructive introduction. Each chapter includes helpful explanatory footnotes, in-text translation of Hebrew and Yiddish terms, and abundant references to the large body of literature drawn upon by the individual authors. The book should not only be of interest and utility to students specializing in Jewish studies but also to those scholars analyzing the general processes of ethnicity in the United States. For the latter audience, a separate over-all glossary might have enhanced the volume beyond the translations within the text.

[Review Of] Henry Louis Gates, Jr., Ed. The Classic Slave Narratives, Angelo Costanzo Jan 1990

[Review Of] Henry Louis Gates, Jr., Ed. The Classic Slave Narratives, Angelo Costanzo

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

At last here is a compact, inexpensive paperback that presents the major black autobiographies of the slave era. It is easy now for teachers of literature, history, or sociology to have their students reading the full texts of the classic slave narratives, instead of just reading bits and pieces of them in anthologies. Henry Louis Gates, Jr., provides an informative introduction to the volume, which consists of works by Olaudah Equiano, Mary Prince, Frederick Douglass, and Harriet Jacobs. Gates notes that these texts "span nearly three-quarters of a century (1789-1861); the authors, two men and two women, include one African, …

[Review Of] Diego Echevarria. Los Sures, Jesse M. Vazquez Jan 1990

[Review Of] Diego Echevarria. Los Sures, Jesse M. Vazquez

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

Perhaps one of the more perplexing, yet also intriguing aspects of Diego Echevarria's film, Los Sures, is the illusion that he creates of isolation and disconnection from the larger world that shapes and engulfs his subject -- a Puerto Rican community in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, New York. The way Echevarria presents the Los Sures community gives one the sense that it sits alone and apart in a land of unknown origin. Yet it is located only a stone's throw away from one of the most affluent urban centers in the world. Not even the Hasidic Jews, who share …

Changes In A Prairie Bird Population From 1940 To 1989, Neil P. Bernstein, Kristine K. Baker, Sherry R. Wilmot Jan 1990

Changes In A Prairie Bird Population From 1940 To 1989, Neil P. Bernstein, Kristine K. Baker, Sherry R. Wilmot

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

We repeated a bird census of a prairie/field community that was done by Kendeigh (1941) in 1940. Changes in the bird populations were compared with changes in vegetation, agricultural land use for the county, and trends in urbanization. Grassland birds did decline in abundance due to causes similar to those cited in other studies. The increase in forest and edge nesting species was more unusual to this study, and probably correlated with the woody succession that had occurred.

A Brief History Of The Textile Society Of America Summary Report By The President, Milton Sonday Jan 1990

A Brief History Of The Textile Society Of America Summary Report By The President, Milton Sonday

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

After The Textile Museum decided to discontinue its Irene Emery Roundtables and die Centre International d'Etude des Textiles Anciens finally admitted it was not interested in an American branch, it became clear that an independent American group of textile enthusiasts should be formed to satisfy the many requests for such an organization. There had been an attempt to form a group which was called WHATS, but it never got off the ground. Peggy Gilfoy at the Indianapolis Museum of Art, one of the original organizers, was left guarding its small fund when it folded.

On April 3, 1987 a small …

Variation Procedures In Northern Ewe Song, V. Kofi Agawu Jan 1990

Variation Procedures In Northern Ewe Song, V. Kofi Agawu

Publications and Research

The major organizational principle of Northern Ewe song is one shared by numerous African, Oriental, and European musical traditions: a small number of models (variously described as "basic shapes," "archetypes," "background structures," "basic designs," "core patterns," "deep structures") is transformed in a wide variety of ways during performance. Variation takes place on different hierarchic levels both within and between songs and includes practically all of a song's dimensions (rhythm, interval, register, contour, harmony, and so on). This principle, although widely demonstrated in the literature on African song (see, among others, Jones 1976; Kauffman 1984; Schmidt 1984; and Erlmann 1985), is …

Observations And Problems In Researching The Contemporary Glass-Bead Industry Of Northern China, Roderick Sprague, An Jiayao Jan 1990

Observations And Problems In Researching The Contemporary Glass-Bead Industry Of Northern China, Roderick Sprague, An Jiayao

BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers

The status of glass-bead manufacturing in northern China is undergoing rapid change due to the development of the plastic-bead industry. Several manufacturing plants, including the large Beijing Glass Ware Factory, are no longer making beads and several other plants are contemplating changes. The variety of domestic glass beads available for purchase today would indicate a greater number of manufacturing sites than are mentioned in the popular literature.

Beadmaking In Islam: The African Trade And The Rise Of Hebron, Peter Francis Jr. Jan 1990

Beadmaking In Islam: The African Trade And The Rise Of Hebron, Peter Francis Jr.

BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers

This paper complements one which appeared in volume 1 of this journal, as it also deals with beads in the Islamic world. However, the present work takes a somewhat different approach, being based primarily on historical sources. It also has a different geographical orientation, dealing with commerce between the Islamic world and the northern portion of Africa. Concentrating mostly on the period from the 12th to the 20th century, it documents the rise of a new beadmaking center at Hebron, in the West Bank. The name "Kano beads" has recently been assigned to one class of Hebron beads, and their …
