Ethnicity, Class And Caste: Categories Of Group Relations And Personal Identities In Sunauli, A Village In Southern Nepal, Premalata Ghimire

Bryn Mawr College Dissertations and Theses

The Satar of Sunauli are divided into three categories: the Sapha Hod, the Bidin Hod and the Christian Satar. This dissertation, based on two periods of field work in southern Nepal, focuses on the Sapha Hod category of the Satar ethnic group and examines the ethnicity of the Sapha Hod in a complex ethnic, caste and class system. The Sapha Hod incorporate certain culturally valued caste rituals in their daily behavior but deny the caste influence and view the borrowed elements as belonging to their own traditional socio-cultural system. Such practice of rituals, belonging to two different cultures, has affected …

Precedent And Legal Authority: A Critical History, Charles W. Collier Jan 1988

Precedent And Legal Authority: A Critical History, Charles W. Collier

UF Law Faculty Publications

In this Article, Professor Charles Collier traces out a general theory of precedential authority through historical sources. The Article focuses on three particularly influential views of precedent: Wambaugh's concept of dictum, Oliphant's concept of stare decisis, and Goodhart's concept of ratio decidendi. These views illustrate an underlying tension between two distinct doctrines of precedential authority. The first doctrine, derived from humanistic thought, restricts-legal authority as narrowly as possible to the express terms of an original text. The second doctrine draws on the broad, generalizing tendencies of the empirical sciences and their corresponding conceptions of scientific authority. The two doctrines coexist …

Art Educators’ Responsibility To Cultural Diversity: Or “Where Are You Goin Wid Alla My Stuff?”, Kristen G. Congdon Jan 1988

Art Educators’ Responsibility To Cultural Diversity: Or “Where Are You Goin Wid Alla My Stuff?”, Kristen G. Congdon

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

The responsibility of art educators to recognize and study the art and context of as many populations as possible is examined in this article. Examples of how artistic expressions have been borrowed, used in different contexts and otherwise removed from their original cultural context are given, and examples of ways that art teachers can help to recognize origins and the artistic functions of many cultures are suggested. By placing art in its context and studying it as it changes, students may begin to understand the artistic source, appreciate the importance of the creative context, and begin to see multi-cultural dimensions …

Crossroads To The 21 St Century: The Evolution Of Ethnic Studies At Bowling Green University, Robert L. Perry, Susan Mae Pauly

At Bowling Green State University's Fourth Annual Ethnic Studies Conference, scholar Dr. James A. Banks observed that Bowling Green State University is soon to become the only institution of higher education in the United States to institute a university-wide requirement in cultural diversity. The implementation of this landmark requirement demonstrates the depth and vigor of the commitment to excellence and equity in education held by the University's Department of Ethnic Studies.

[Review Of] Carmen Gertrudis Espinosa. The Freeing Of The Deer-And Other New Mexico Indian Myths, Silvester J. Brito Jan 1988

[Review Of] Carmen Gertrudis Espinosa. The Freeing Of The Deer-And Other New Mexico Indian Myths, Silvester J. Brito

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

The Freeing of the Deer is an unusual collection of southwest American Indian-Spanish lore. What makes the book so distinct is that it offers the reader the unique opportunity to appreciate Native American tales which have been preserved in Spanish and translated into English. Moreover, there is a special feature to this collection, for the English-Spanish versions are set up en-face. This collection of Native American world views as seen through their Spanish renditions also makes this an important book to have in one's library. There is, however, a drawback to this collection, namely the lack of eloquence in translation …

[Review Of] Luvenia A. George. Teaching The Music Of Six Different Cultures, Constance C. Giugliano Jan 1988

[Review Of] Luvenia A. George. Teaching The Music Of Six Different Cultures, Constance C. Giugliano

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

With the recent appearance of more authentic ethnic music in music curriculum series, as well as the spreading influence of the Orff approach to music education based on indigenous and "primitive" musics and even the proliferation of commercial music influenced by non-Western styles, the appetite of music teachers has been well-whetted for additional source material on ethnic music. In this revised edition of Luvenia George's 1976 book, we have an extraordinary resource that now makes it inexcusable not to have an enriched music program in our schools.

[Review Of] Jerry Kammer. The Second Long Walk: The Navajo-Hopi Land Dispute, George W. Sieber

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

The job of the social sciences and sometimes investigative reporters is to deal with on-going problems that cannot be solved, but must be coped with; Jerry Kammer has found an example of this in the Navajo-Hopi Land Dispute. His first contact with the subject was during summer, 1974, as a newspaper reporter. His book includes interviews with people involved, thoughtful analysis of their statements, chronology of events, two maps, 27 photographs, an adequate index, and chapter endnotes.

The Mexican Jaspe (Ikat) Rebozo: Comments On Its History, Significance And Prevalence, Virginia Davis Jan 1988

The Mexican Jaspe (Ikat) Rebozo: Comments On Its History, Significance And Prevalence, Virginia Davis

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

The rebozo is a multi-function shawl worn by women in Mexico, 6 to 12 feet long and 24 to 34 inches wide. Approximately three-quarters of the length is woven; the remainder is fringe, most often elaborately worked: usually by half hitch or overhand knotting or by finger weaving. Place and identity are communicated by the yam, the color and design of the weaving, the style and technique of fringe finishing, and by the manner in which the rebozo is worn. My particular interest is the ikat rebozo. The Spanish for ikat is jaspe. Jaspe,(ikat), a system of resist dyeing a …

Cognitive Textiles Cloths: The Indigenous Classification Of Batak, Sandra A. Niessen

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

INTRODUCTION

Since completing a doctorate in anthropology on textiles produced by the Batak of North Sumatra (Niessen 1985), I have been supported by various post-doctoral scholarships (1) to produce an inventory of these same textiles. I am pleased to have this rare opportunity to tell you, a learned society of textile scholars, how I have gone about this task, my motives, goals, and methodology. I particularly would welcome feedback from you on what I see to be the theoretical underpinnings and implications of the project.

The inception of this project dates from a day in 1980 when I visited one …
