Life Through Rose Colored Glasses, Wendy Brown
Honors Capstones
The senses of an entering freshman college student are immediately bombarded with various confusing stimuli. It is a difficult process to search through all of this new information to find that which would interest the student most. Along with books, lectures and homework, college provides the opportunity for students to discover a world wherein they can become an active participant. It is, however, the choice of the student to make the final decision, to decide what to believe in, where to put their time and energies. During the fall semester of 1987 I decided to conduct my graduate school education …

Journal of Dispute Resolution
As the practice of divorce mediation continues to grow, more and more professionals need training and literature to develop skills and perspective. A welcome addition to their libraries will be Divorce Mediation: Theory and Practice, edited by Jay Folberg and Ann Milne. In the preface, the editors explain that the purpose of the book is to examine divorce mediation from an interdisciplinary perspective. They achieve this goal with a series of articles written by professionals from such diverse fields as anthropology, sociology, psychology, law, and social work. Each article examines a different aspect of divorce mediation and provides the special …

An Industry Perspective On The Benefits Of And Regulation Of Genetically Engineered Plants, Nicholas M. Frey
An Industry Perspective On The Benefits Of And Regulation Of Genetically Engineered Plants, Nicholas M. Frey
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
The seed industry has routinely incorporated new technology into its research and development programs. Plant generic engineering is the most recent technology to be utilized for seed product development efforts. New sources of herbicide, insect, and disease resistance are being incorporated into crop plants using cellular and molecular biology techniques.
New regulatory guidelines have been developed which require regulatory approval before genetically engineered plants can be reseed in the field and ultimately marketed. The impact of these regulations on product development is unclear. Hopefully a dialogue will develop among industry, government agencies, and the public such that reasonable and appropriate …

Agronomic Performance Of Sorghum Hybrids Produced By Using Different Male-Sterility-Inducing Cytoplasms, A. J. Maves, R. E. Atkins
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
Experiments were conducted in three environments in Iowa to obtain information on the effects of different cytoplasms on agronomic characters in grain sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench) hybrids. Compared with A1 cytoplasm, A2 and A3 cytoplasms delayed flowering; reduced the percentage of fertile pollen, the number of seeds per panicle, and grain yield; and increased 100-seed weight of the hybrids. Hybrids with A2 or A3 cytoplasm did not differ (p ≥0.05) from those in the A1 cytoplasm for plant height, panicles per plant, or for length, width, and area of the third and fourth leaves from the top of …
A Vascular Flora Of The Swaledale Railroad Prairie In North Central Iowa, Thomas L. Eddy
A Vascular Flora Of The Swaledale Railroad Prairie In North Central Iowa, Thomas L. Eddy
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
"Railroad prairies" are remnant native grasslands that grow along railroad right-of-ways. The Swaledale railroad prairie, which is in north central Iowa, occurs along the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad Company right-of-way in Cerro Gordo County.
The railroad right-of-way and an abandoned sand pit, which lies adjacent to the railroad embankment, harbor a collection of tallgrass prairie remnants. The sand pit supplied earthen fill which was used to elevate the original railroad embankment, circa 1887. It is noteworthy that the method of excavation for fill material helped to preserve earthen knolls that are covered with original tallgrass prairie.
Plant collections were acquired …

Literacy For Living: What Literacy Means In The Lives Of Three Adults, Lorraine Ann Neilsen
Literacy For Living: What Literacy Means In The Lives Of Three Adults, Lorraine Ann Neilsen
Doctoral Dissertations
This research is an ethnographic study of the meaning of literacy in the lives of three adults. The two-year study, which took place in the community of Hubbards, Nova Scotia, investigated the literacy background and current literacy activities of two women and one man. The data were collected using interactive methods, such as participant observation and interviews, and non-interactive methods, such as collecting reading and writing artifacts. The results of the study described the holistic process of learning and demonstrating literate behaviours at home and at work, and illustrated the role that literacy plays in shaping the contexts of the …
An Historical, Theoretical And Empirical Analysis Of Direct Foreign Investment In The United States During The Twentieth Century, Steven Louis Widener
An Historical, Theoretical And Empirical Analysis Of Direct Foreign Investment In The United States During The Twentieth Century, Steven Louis Widener
Doctoral Dissertations
This thesis employs both aggregate data and a dissaggregated sample of 135 non-U.S. multinational enterprises to analyze the extent of direct foreign investment (DFI) in United States manufacturing since 1900, its characteristics and causes. This research revealed that: (1) DFI originates primarily from other developed capitalist countries, (2) most DFI is relatively recent, accelerating markedly after 1970, (3) from the perspective of relative interpenetration of DFI, U.S. imperial power versus its major trading rivals has waned since 1970, (4) there is a strong tendency for the parent firm to penetrate the market through acquisitions of existing U.S. firms, and (5) …
A Socio-Historical Analysis Of The American Steel Industry, 1865-1929: Factory Closures In The Cycle Of Capitalist Development, Daniel John Santoro
A Socio-Historical Analysis Of The American Steel Industry, 1865-1929: Factory Closures In The Cycle Of Capitalist Development, Daniel John Santoro
Doctoral Dissertations
The case of the development of the American steel industry from 1865-1929 is used in a socio-historical analysis of factory closures in order to critically address the theory of deindustrialization, influential in much current sociological work, developed by writers such as Bluestone and Harrison (1982). The historiography of the steel industry is analyzed in order to examine the role of factory closures in the formation and disformation of the nation's basic capacity to produce by comparing the course of steel industry development from Reconstruction through the first thirty years of the twentieth century to that following the Second World War, …

Reservation Policy And The Economic Position Of Wichita Women, Carolyn Garrett Pool
Reservation Policy And The Economic Position Of Wichita Women, Carolyn Garrett Pool
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Early anthropological studies addressed the economic position of women as one component of women's "status"-a construct used to examine a variety of gender-based social distinctions. These distinctions were conceptualized as the opposing domains of "domestic" and "public." The association of women with the domestic domain was viewed as the critical factor in understanding asymmetrical relations of power and authority. Since status has generally been defined in terms of participation in the public, economic, and political sectors dominated by men, anthropologists have proposed alternatives to the strict association of power with public roles. They used the term "influence" to mean the …
Symbols Of German-Russsian Ethnic Identity On The Northern Plains, Timothy J. Kloberdanz
Symbols Of German-Russsian Ethnic Identity On The Northern Plains, Timothy J. Kloberdanz
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
During the past two decades, the subject of ethnicity has provoked popular interest and a proliferation of research. Scholars from a variety of academic backgrounds have described, analyzed, and reassessed the importance of ethnic identity in our modern society. Yet in 1980, following the long-awaited appearance of theHarvard Encyclopedia of American Ethnic Groups, the basic question "What is ethnicity?" remained a perplexing one. The volume's editors admitted that "there is as yet no consensus about the precise meaning of ethnicity" since the distinguishing characteristics of ethnic groups seldom can be forced into neat conceptual categories. 1 While certain …

Review Of The Cheyenne Nation: A Social And Demographic History., Russel Lawrence Barsh
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
"Like every nation in the world," John Moore argues in this exceptionally candid and respectful study, "the Cheyenne have cosmopolitan origins." Building on the Cheyenne case, Moore convincingly challenges the persistent characterization of tribal societies as static "crystals" shattered by their collision with European states.
Structure Of Agriculture And Women's Culture In The Great Plains, Cornella Butler Flora, Jan L. Flora
Structure Of Agriculture And Women's Culture In The Great Plains, Cornella Butler Flora, Jan L. Flora
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
T he family farm has prevailed as a bastion of petty capitalism in the Great Plains. Although capital and labor are highly differentiated in the larger society, they are combined in the family production unit in Great Plains agriculture. In addition to being the economic base for much of the Great Plains from the settlement period onward, the family farm provided a cultural base from which a series of values emerged. Women were important in reproducing this culture that tended to stress agrarian values and the primacy of the family as building blocks for a community based on the values …

A Charisma Model Of Telepathic Communication, James M. Donovan
A Charisma Model Of Telepathic Communication, James M. Donovan
Law Faculty Scholarly Articles
This paper opened by making some general criticisms of the state of parapsychological research: that it suffered from a lack of external validity and from uncritical acceptance of a flawed paradigm. The charisma model was offered as an attempt to rectify these problems. It allows for laboratory experiments to be designed which closely approximate genuine human interactions by shifting the paradigm for telepathy from that of energy transfers to one of communication events.

On The Nature And Antiquity Of The Manix Lake Industry, Douglas Bamforth, Ronald Dorn
Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications
The antiquity of human occupation in the New World undoubtedly is one of the major unresolved culture-historical problems in North American prehistory. On the one hand, a dominant position with a long history in American archaeology (cf. Wilmsen 1965) holds that human beings arrived in the New World at the close of the Pleistocene, no longer than 12,000 years ago, and that Clovis sites represent the oldest occupation in the Americas (Haynes 1970; Martin 1973; Waters 1985). On the other hand, a less widely accepted school of thought sees a variety of evidence for human occupation in the Americas well …
The Allocation Of Parental Care Among The Ye'kwana, Raymond B. Hames
The Allocation Of Parental Care Among The Ye'kwana, Raymond B. Hames
Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications
It is well known that human children require more care or parental investment than any other primate species (Lancaster and Lancaster 1983). While this dimension of human behavior is well documented in the psychological literature for Euroamerican populations (Babchuck et al. 1985), it has received scant, quantitative attention by anthropologists working among tribal populations (for exceptions see Whiting and Whiting 1975, Katz and Konner 1981, Hurtado et al. 1985, Hewlett, this volume (Chapter 16), Turke, this volume (Chapter 10)). The role of alloparental care (care of non-offspring children) has received even less quantitative attention by social scientists (for a review …
