Analysis Of Pattern Structure By Geometric Symmetries, Dorothy K. Washburn
Analysis Of Pattern Structure By Geometric Symmetries, Dorothy K. Washburn
Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings
INTRODUCTION
While a large literature exists on the technologies different peoples use to manufacture woven fabrics (cf. Emery 1966), little attention has been given to developing equally systematic ways to study the patterns produced. This paper outlines one approach to pattern analysis which utilizes mathematical symmetries to describe the way design parts are arranged in a pattern. The advantages of this method are discussed and examples of a number of problems that such an analysis of pattern structure can address are described.
SYMMETRY ANALYSIS:
Symmetry analysis is a mathematically based description of the structure of a pattern. It specifies the …
Piecing In Twill Tapestry Shawls Of Persia And Kashmir, Grace C. Beardsley
Piecing In Twill Tapestry Shawls Of Persia And Kashmir, Grace C. Beardsley
Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings
The 19th century witnessed the development of considerable piecework in the manufacture of twill tapestry shawls in both Kashmir and Persia. Modes of construction parallel so closely as to be indistinguishable. This is not surprising considering the centuries-long lively cultural intercourse between the two areas and especially their exchange of designs, weavers and textile technology. In both regions piecework was a response to pressure for faster production, the culmination of a gradual shift from atelier weaving toward a mass market.
Among construction modes, the weaving and subsequent assembly of many rectilinear shapes is to be found especially among long shawls. …
Colonial Ecuadorian Yndias And Their Textiles, Blenda Femenias
Colonial Ecuadorian Yndias And Their Textiles, Blenda Femenias
Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings
Quito, Ecuador was a well established colonial urban center by the late sixteenth century. Although dominated by the Spanish ruling elite, indigenous people (male yndios, female yndias} and those of both Spanish and Andean ancestry (mestizos, mestizas} were socially and economically active in Quito. Cloth was a major trade item and prestige good, which circulated widely in Quito society and throughout the Andes. In pre-Hispanic times, Quito was not a major cloth-production center, and most fabric was imported from elsewhere in the Andes. During the colonial period, in addition to Andean textiles, European fabrics, as …
Designing Among The Navajo: Ethno Aesthetics In Weaving, Ann Lane Hedlund
Designing Among The Navajo: Ethno Aesthetics In Weaving, Ann Lane Hedlund
Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings
Navajo weaving from northeastern Arizona and contiguous areas if the American Southwest is widely recognized for colors and patterns that range from subtle shades to dynamic brilliance, from soft stripes to bold geometries to fanciful pictorials. The apparent diversity in this native textile art, developed over the past three centuries, has defied any unified description of The Navajo Style. While Navajo blankets and rugs may be superficially categorized and classified, put into chronological sequences and evolutionary schemes, when the textiles are viewed synoptically, the delineation of Navajo aesthetics remains a formidable task.
The search for a Navajo style and sense …

[Review Of] Gilbert L. Wilson. Buffalo Bird Woman's Garden: Agriculture Of The Hidatsa Indians, Norma C. Wilson
[Review Of] Gilbert L. Wilson. Buffalo Bird Woman's Garden: Agriculture Of The Hidatsa Indians, Norma C. Wilson
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
Buffalo Bird Woman's Garden was originally published in 1917 as Agriculture of the Hidatsa Indians: An Indian Interpretation. First written as Wilson's doctoral dissertation, the book is particularly informative about the gardening techniques of Hidatsa women. The narrative voice is that of Maxidiwiac (Buffalo Bird Woman). Thus, the book fits within the genre of as-told-to autobiography; however, the narrative is more focused and detailed than Wilson's general autobiography of the same woman, Waheenee: An Indian Girl's Story, published in 1921.
[Review Of] Rodney Frey. The World Of The Crow Indians: As Driftwood Lodges, Robert Gish
[Review Of] Rodney Frey. The World Of The Crow Indians: As Driftwood Lodges, Robert Gish
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
Ethnographic studies have long been plagued by questions of credibility. Can the ethnographer believe his or her sources? And, in turn, can readers believe the ethnographer? Ronald Frey knows full well that such issues of "believability" plague anyone attempting to understand a culture's otherness from the outside. He is determined to explain general historical, religious, and cultural aspects of "the world of the Crow Indians" from as close to the inside as he possibly can tell them.
[Review Of] Vinson Brown. Native Americans Of The Pacific Coast, William Oandasan
[Review Of] Vinson Brown. Native Americans Of The Pacific Coast, William Oandasan
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
In the introduction to Native Americans of the Pacific Coast, Vinson Brown presents many admirable ambitions for any scholar writing on human existence. Brown proclaims that he will attempt to make the first Americans "live" in the style of the 1500s to 1700s during the "days of old" and of "glory and independence." He then proceeds to assert that, in order to accomplish this goal, antiquated concepts used to "justify" the conquest of tribal Peoples must be "put aside." He urges us, "instead," to be inquisitive and open so that we can "see and hear" what indigenous life was like …
[Review Of] David Montejano. Anglos And Mexicans In The Making Of Texas, 1836-1986, Helen M. Castillo
[Review Of] David Montejano. Anglos And Mexicans In The Making Of Texas, 1836-1986, Helen M. Castillo
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
Montejano presents an organized historical perspective of Anglos and Mexicans in the making of Texas. Four major time periods of incorporation, reconstruction, segregation and integration are used effectively to compartmentalize major historical events, serve as accurate sociopolitical descriptors and facilitate reader comprehension of these events. This approach is particularly helpful to the novice historian in conjunction with the tables and maps used to illustrate the content discussed. Sensitive ethnic cultural issues are discussed objectively with inflammatory or emotion laden terms avoided. Though subtle, subjectivity is present in the author's interpretative comments of Texas-Mexico history; the reader gains a sense of …

[Review Of] S. Frank Miyamoto. Social Solidarity Among The Japanese In Seattle, Neil Nakadate
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
Social Solidarity among the Japanese in Seattle is a rare and irreplaceable study of Japanese American life prior to World War II. Its focus is "the social relational network of the Japanese community" as dominated by the immigrant, first generation Issei -- the intimate fusion of expectations, obligations, and reciprocity that prevailed in the years between immigration and internment. First published in 1939, Miyamoto's monograph was reprinted in 1981 and 1984 by the Asian American Studies Program at the University of Washington, each time with a new introduction by the author.
The Co-Opting Of Ethnic Studies In The American University: A Critical View, Jesse M. Vazquez
The Co-Opting Of Ethnic Studies In The American University: A Critical View, Jesse M. Vazquez
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
The birth of ethnic studies in the American university was accompanied by the politics and pedagogy of rage, pride, and mistrust for the then prevailing curricular academic structures and its tradition-bound, academically conservative gatekeepers. The campus take-overs, student demands, and confrontations were a common expression of the times, and concomitantly these were also shapers of the changing times. The presence or absence of ethnic minority faculty and students in our universities was and continues to be one of many indices by which we measure the willingness of this society to live up to its responsibility and promise to guarantee expanding …
[Review Of] Susan E. Keefe And Amado M. Padilla. Chicano Ethnicity, Joe Rodriguez
[Review Of] Susan E. Keefe And Amado M. Padilla. Chicano Ethnicity, Joe Rodriguez
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
Chicano Ethnicity is a valuable contribution to ethnic scholarship and the question of why people of Mexican descent in the U.S. choose different names. Chicano, Mexican-American, American of Mexican descent, and Mexicano are distinct. Since this population is heterogeneous, Keefe and Padilla study how three primary factors, Cultural Awareness, Ethnic Loyalty, and Assimilation/Acculturation account for such diversity. These three primary factors shape unique expressions of group identity and an extended sense of the self.

[Review Of] Donald M. Taylor And Fathali M. Moghaddam. Theories Of Intergroup Relations: International Social Psychological Perspectives, Linda Gonzalves
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
This ambitious book comes at a time when the resurgence of intergroup conflict sounds a despairing note to those of us who have spent more years than we care to count struggling for a united front against an oppressive ruling class. To keep heart we need to periodically focus on the progress that has been made and, in Mao's words, review our accomplishments and transgressions in order to "make the past serve the present." For those of us working in the academic enterprise, this means that the tools of our trade, our theories and our methods, must be criticized and …

[Review Of] Helen Hornbeck Tanner, Editor; Miklos Pinther, Cartographer. Atlas Of Great Lakes Indian History, Elizabeth Whalley
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
Surprising as it may be, this is the first atlas of Great Lakes Indian history. Originally, Helen Hornbeck Tanner was involved in a research assignment which caused her to collect information on Great Lakes Indians at the time of the Revolution. After finding that maps of the Great Lakes Region were erroneous or deceptive, and that Ohio maps were marked with "little known area" or "insufficient information," she carefully developed this atlas. A bibliographic essay at the end of the atlas describes the enormous research that went into mapping these ethnic groups' histories. A noteworthy variety of sources were analyzed: …

[Review Of] Beryl Gilroy. Frangipani House, Charlotte H. Bruner
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
Frangipani House is basically a portrait of Mama King, a patient in a Caribbean nursing home. She reveals much of her past in her reveries as she watches out her window from her hospital room. "Matron think I do nothing ... but thinking is hard work .... And everybody think my mind empty, my head empty, and my heart empty. I see people, dead and gone, walking and talking and young. And out of my old worn out body, a young woman walk out and life is like roll of new cloth waiting to roll out." She interacts intermittently with …

Judicial Conscience And Natural Rights: A Reply To Professor Ledewitz, Harry V. Jaffa
Judicial Conscience And Natural Rights: A Reply To Professor Ledewitz, Harry V. Jaffa
Seattle University Law Review
In our Spring 1987 issue, Professor Jaffa authored an essay in which he posited that the fundamental principles of equality and other tenets of natural law expressed in the Declaration of Independence were originally intended to be the principles of the Constitution of 1787 Professor Jaffa asserted that while the Framers believed in the "law of nature and nature's God," many contemporary constitutional thinkers, including fellow conservatives Chief Justice William Rehnquist and Attorney General Edwin Meese, do not. Thus, Jaffa argued, those conservatives "who today most aggressively appeal to the doctrine of original intent are among its most resolute antagonists." …

At American University in Washington, D.C., on November 20, 1973, Julius Stone presented the tenth annual Mooers Lecture, entitled, "Knowledge, Survival, and the Duties of Science."' The central question and thesis that he propounded could and, indeed, should be raised anew today; they form the very core of the province and function of law, science, and medicine. In our brave new world they point to the leeways of choice and patterns of discourse that exist in grappling with the central issue of social responsibility in scientific inquiry. Perhaps they will assist in forging a consensus opinion for a subsequent course …
