Postfire Vegetation Change Detection Using Landsat Mss And Tm Data, Mark Edward Jakubauskas
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Three dates of Landsat digital data were classified and then analyzed using a geographic information system (GIS). The intent of this study was to determine if differences in burn severity relate to later vegetative cover within a northern pines forest. The May 5, 1980, Mack Lake Fire in the Huron National Forest, Michigan, was selected as the study site for this research. This wildfire burned over 9000 hectares of jack pine, red pine, and mixed deciduous forest within a six-hour period. Landsat MSS data from June 1973 and TM data from October 1982 were classified using an unsupervised approach to …

A Preliminary Report Of Investigations At The Kline 1 Site (20sj29), St. Joseph County, Michigan, Dale W. Quattrin
Masters Theses
The Kline 1 site, located in Mendon Township, St. Joseph County, Michigan, is a multi-component site situated on the eastern shore of Portage Lake. While the projectile points recovered during surface collecting suggest interm ittent presence on this site from late Paleo-Indian to Late Woodland times, the occupation offering the most substantial cultural and subsistence data is attributed to the Late Woodland period. Radiocarbon assays received on two features gave dates of 830 + 70 B.P. and 810 + 50 B.P. calibrated to be A.D. 1215 and A.D. 1223 respectively. The importance of this site relates to its spatially intermediate …

Communication In The Socialization Of The Academic Department Chairperson, Christopher H. Spicer, Ann Q. Staton-Spicer
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article examines the role of communication in the socialization of new academic department chairs. While most chairs are appointed with little or no administrative training, they must quickly adapt to complex responsibilities involving leadership without extensive authority. Using intensive interviews with four newly appointed chairs, the study identifies a typology of twenty-one communication dimensions across four functional categories: informative, integrative, regulative, and innovative. These include activities such as information seeking and giving, relationship building, exercising authority, and initiating change. Findings show that communication is central to role-making as chairs negotiate expectations, establish credibility, and adapt prior faculty experience to …
The Practice And Discourse Of Legal Scholarship, Edward L. Rubin
The Practice And Discourse Of Legal Scholarship, Edward L. Rubin
Michigan Law Review
This article begins with a discussion of the critique of methodology, a characterization of standard legal scholarship in terms of the critique, and an exploration of the critique's relevance for this form of scholarship. The next section discusses the modes of legal analysis represented by the critical legal studies, law and literature, and law as practical reason movements, which draw from many of the same philosophic sources as the critique. Despite their common origin, these movements do not rely on the critique of methodology itself, and do not focus on standard legal scholarship. The Article then proceeds to offer a …
