Speech Evaluation: An Emphasis On Process, Darlene M. Daubert
Speech Evaluation: An Emphasis On Process, Darlene M. Daubert
Iowa Journal of Communication
After my experiences of teaching persuasion, oral interpretation, acting, and rhetoric, I have developed a few ideas about how to "teach" (or perhaps I should say, facilitate learning) in an oral communication course. Perhaps due to my background in theatre and my own orientation to the world, I view the art of learning how to communicate as movement, action, and process. Just as movement is intrinsic to the drama, it is a vital force in a speech communication class.
Review: Development Of Functional Communication Competencies, Mary M. C. Anderson
Review: Development Of Functional Communication Competencies, Mary M. C. Anderson
Iowa Journal of Communication
Communication is a key factor in any transaction for children or for adults. Because breakdowns in communication so easily occur, it becomes necessary for teachers to help students of all ages develop competence in the skill of communicating. A competent communicator not only knows the rules of language structure, but also knows how to use language as a tool in everyday situations, and can weigh the different factors of a communication situation and process that information to produce an appropriate response. If this is the desired outcome, the teacher must ask how to achieve it. Barbara Wood has provided classroom …

Each of us evaluates almost constantly--comparing today's performance against yesterday's, measuring current students against former ones, weighing one teaching technique against another. The purpose here, however, is not to condemn nor condone evaluation but to share ideas about a specific instance of evaluation, evaluation of student teaching.
In the student teaching situation evaluation is "diagnostic." Evaluation helps identify what student teachers do well, where they need improvement, and how they can better achieve their goals. Evaluation is shared by student teachers, high school cooperating teachers and university supervisors. Together …
Review: The Articulate Person: A Guide To Everyday Public Speaking, Jon Hall
Review: The Articulate Person: A Guide To Everyday Public Speaking, Jon Hall
Iowa Journal of Communication
The Articulate Person aptly serves as both the title of the text as well as the goal for which it is designed to achieve. In a prefatory statement, the author advises the student/reader that the text is not intended to create a polished professional speaker, but an articulate person--one who wants to learn to speak in public with some measure of intelligence, appropriateness, and confidence. The author's definition then of "articulate" serves as the end toward which this introductory public speaking text strives to accomplish.
