Improving Emotional Regulation Among Kindergarten Students, Itzel Hernandez-Rodriguez May 2026

Improving Emotional Regulation Among Kindergarten Students, Itzel Hernandez-Rodriguez

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Many young elementary school children have not yet developed effective emotional regulation skills. Children who lack these skills may use coping strategies like isolation, aggressive behavior, and emotional suppression that may be harmful for themselves and their peers. When children learn how to manage their emotions, they are able to use effective coping strategies to calm down, may improve their academic performance, and strengthen their relationships. Therefore, I have created a one day, fifty minute lesson for kindergarten elementary school children from Amesti Elementary School in Watsonville, California.

The Role Of Music In Storytelling, Eliot Z. Tenberg May 2026

The Role Of Music In Storytelling, Eliot Z. Tenberg

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Music is often thought of as a background element in storytelling, something that enhances a scene but is not essential to its meaning. However, this perspective overlooks the powerful role music plays in shaping how stories are understood and experienced. Across film, theater, and even interactive media, music does far more than accompany images or dialogue. It actively guides emotional response, constructs narrative meaning, and connects audiences to stories on a deeper psychological level. Unlike visual or verbal storytelling alone, music has the unique ability to communicate emotion without explicit explanation. A shift in melody, harmony, or rhythm can signal …

Bridging The Gap To Higher Education: Increasing Parental Knowledge On University Systems And Financial Aid, Maria G. Rosales Marquez

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Many parents of high school students are unaware about the different university systems and financial aid options available to their students for attending college. Without this awareness, parents may not accept all of the financial aid that is offered to their student and may make poor financial decisions such as accepting loans and getting in debt to pay for their child’s education. More awareness about university systems and financial options can help parents support their adolescents’ pursuit of higher education and navigating costs. In order to address this issue, I created a 90-minute presentation for parents who have students in …

The Fundamental Group: A Geometric Perspective, Kayla M. Bittenbinder May 2026

The Fundamental Group: A Geometric Perspective, Kayla M. Bittenbinder

All NMU Master's Theses

This thesis explores the deep mathematical connection between the flexible, continuous world of topology and the rigid, distance-preserving world of metric geometry. We begin by constructing the fundamental group of a topological space, using the concept of loops and loop homotopy to identify a global topological invariant such as a hole or puncture. We then transition to the geometric realm of metric spaces and isometries, demonstrating how the isometry group of a space algebraically encodes its rigid symmetries. To bridge these two distinct mathematical frameworks, we utilize the construction of the universal covering space. We pull back the metric from …

The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Host: Fleas And The History Of Pikas In North America, Josh Pletcher May 2026

The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Host: Fleas And The History Of Pikas In North America, Josh Pletcher

All NMU Master's Theses

Parasite phylogenetics can offer windows into the cryptic evolutionary history of hosts, often highlighting events that are not recorded by the phylogenetics of the host. Pikas (small lagomorphs) host a diverse parasite community comprising endoparasites (e.g., coccidians, nematodes, and cestodes) and ectoparasites (e.g., fleas and mites). Phylogenetic analysis of pika endoparasites has revealed pikas evolved in Asia and colonized North America in two waves, and that contact between these two pika lineages allowed parasites to be transferred from one lineage to another and to survive the extinction of their original host. To uncover these cryptic histories, understanding the biogeography of …

A Look Through The Bluest Eye: Intersectionality, Identity & The Role Of Fiction, Sydney Foster

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Since its coinage in 1989, the idea of intersectionality has persisted academic research in understanding how a person is treated and what experiences they are subjected to, specifically those belonging to marginalized groups. My theory is that a person’s intersectionality is the vehicle which leads to their experiences, which when totaled, comprise a person’s identity. This project focuses specifically on the treatment of Black women and girls, the academic research and first-hand accounts that support the existence of the perpetual adultification, dehumanization, and sexualization of these individuals, and how these phenomena increase Black women and girls’ risk for maltreatment, specifically …

Nutrition Teaching Methods In Communities, Emery Fayth Rowles May 2026

Nutrition Teaching Methods In Communities, Emery Fayth Rowles

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Community is a vital part of non-formal education. A sense of, longing for, and responsibility towards community draws individuals to participate in local services and classes. Community has been shown to have positive impacts on learning, self efficacy, and health.

Many of the techniques used in education mirror techniques used in building community—such as the use of small group discussions and cultural sensitivity—but with distinct differences in mindset. Most educational approaches see the acquisition and use of knowledge as the key purpose of the program and evaluate participants on an individual basis. This approach makes sense for programs meant to …
