Psychology As Used In Advertising, Martin Lang Apr 1924

Psychology As Used In Advertising, Martin Lang

Bachelors’ Theses

Advertisers many years ago made little use of psychology in their campaigns — at least they claimed the same. But when their advertisements are alalyzed and the motives found to which they appealed in their copy, it is seen that they acted according to the everyday tendencies if mankind and truthfully employed psychology.

Competition Of Foreign Products In Logan With Similar Products Produced Locally, Rulon Smith

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Things which have the power to satisfy human wants have utility. Goods which exist in quantities less than sufficient to satisfy all the wants for them are called economic goods. These goods are produced by the application of man's mental and physical powers to the materials of nature.

Critique Of Influence Of Mineral Manures Upon The Mineral And Nitrogen Composition Of Plants, Dan Nelson Apr 1924

Critique Of Influence Of Mineral Manures Upon The Mineral And Nitrogen Composition Of Plants, Dan Nelson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Variation in quality of plants of the same species has been known to exist for a long time. The influences bringing about such variation have been studied only comparatively recently. Quantity production has been given the greatest amount of attention as a rule, the beneficial results from the use of manures being judged by the quantity of produce. Some plants, however, varied so widely in composition, and the variations were of such paramount importance, that the influences affecting quality began to receive some attention. Of this type of plants may be mentioned sugar-beets and tobacco. There was also the hope …

Life Of John Warwick Daniel, Ruth Lazenby Apr 1924

Life Of John Warwick Daniel, Ruth Lazenby

Honors Theses

John Warwick Daniel was born on the 5th of September, 1824, in Lynchburg, and died on the 29th of June, 1910. Only sixty-eight years of life, a short period when one measures the span of a lifetime and yet he crowded into these years so much that he has rightly come to be called soldier and orator, jurist and lawgiver, statesman and senator. As a soldier he was brave, loyal and devoted to duty, winning many honors for courage and gallantry. As an orator he was noted for his eloquence, charm and unsurpassed beauty of language, and it was perhaps …

Virginia's Attitude Toward The Compromise Of 1850, Anne T. Gordon Apr 1924

Virginia's Attitude Toward The Compromise Of 1850, Anne T. Gordon

Honors Theses

As with an individual, a great conflict develops character and causes expression of ideals, so in the life of a nation conflicts develop the people, and give us a knowledge of their ideals and principles. It is mainly with the latter aspect of one great conflict - the struggle over the Compromise of 1850 - that this paper will deal. In this short article an effort will be made to show the attitude of Virginia - one section, small in territorial expanse when compared with the whole, but large in influence, as she faced this problem on the solution of …

The Economic Basis Of The American Revolution, Eda Kenkel Jan 1924

The Economic Basis Of The American Revolution, Eda Kenkel

Bachelors’ Theses

A searching inquiry into the causes of the American Revolution, a study simply of what led the heretofore passive colonists to open revolt against the mother country, is apt to produce results which in themselves may appear revolutionary. Such a candid examination will make both tyrannical king and parliament and idealistic American patriots disappear, for in no war has either friend or fee been entirely in the right. In the past American historians have devoted page after page to discussing the Revolution, and with few exceptions, these accounts have been greatly to the glory of the brave and high minded …

An Experimental Comparison Of The Feeding Value Of Soy Bean With Alfalfa Hay For Feeding Dairy Cows, Wilard R. Beall Jan 1924

An Experimental Comparison Of The Feeding Value Of Soy Bean With Alfalfa Hay For Feeding Dairy Cows, Wilard R. Beall

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The tendency during the last few years has been to use more and more of the legumes for feeding dairy cows. Just a few years ago (1)”Dairymen near the Yakima Valley, Washington state, fed their cows nothing but alfalfa hay during the winter. The cows received 40 to 50 pounds of alfalfa per cow per day and produced from 6,000 to 7, 000 pounds of milk per year. A Guernsey cow gave 20 pounds of milk per day, four and one-half months after calving and have received no feed but alfalfa hay for two months previous to that time. The …

Diffraction And Interference Applied To The Reproduction Of Sound, Percy Martin Roope Jan 1924

Diffraction And Interference Applied To The Reproduction Of Sound, Percy Martin Roope

Historical Dissertations & Theses

The diffraction and interference problems in sound are to a large extent those in light. However, in regard to a practical solution of problems, the analogy must not be carried too far. In light, in general, we deal with slits or circular openings, the dimensions of which are large in comparison with the wave lengths employed. On the other hand, in sound the openings thru which sound passes are sometimes large and sometimes small compared with the wave lengths. Many of the approximations made in the solution of problems in light cannot be made in sound.

The Doctrine Of The Resurection In The Old Testament, Arthur E. Neitzel Jan 1924

The Doctrine Of The Resurection In The Old Testament, Arthur E. Neitzel

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

Abraham, as well as the other believers of the Old Testament era, believed in the "God who quickeneth the dead, and calleth those things which be not as though they, were.”(Romans 4,17 )

Pauline Eschatology, Luther A. Schuessler Jan 1924

Pauline Eschatology, Luther A. Schuessler

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The purpose of this inquiry is to present a brief resume of Pauline Eschatology in the narrow sense as it is represented in the thirteen Epistles of Paul and in the discourses attributed to him in the Book of the Acts. Since these Epistles and discourses comprehend the cardinal truths of eschatology, the value of this inquiry is obvious.

The Christology Of The Apostolic Fathers, Carl J. Spilman Jan 1924

The Christology Of The Apostolic Fathers, Carl J. Spilman

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

It is the aim of this study to gather all material in the Apostolic fathers that has any bearing upon Christ, His person and His work; to examine in detail the Christological teachings of .each writer; and finally, in conclusion, to show that there are no stages of development, and that no thought is found in the writings of the Apostolic Fathers that has not been set forth by the New Testament.

Alleged Discrepancies Of Second Samuel, Tr. Rehwaldt Jan 1924

Alleged Discrepancies Of Second Samuel, Tr. Rehwaldt

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The purpose then, of this treatise regarding the Second Book of Samuel is to examine the discrepancies, expressly alleged by critical scholars. Are the objections raised against the passages involved justified! Must the inaccuracies be ascribed to a certain•·document, a later redactor, or reviser! Are the discrepancies real or merely apparent! These are the questions which come into consideration.

The Christian Religion Vs Philonism And Stoicism, Otto P. Kretzmann Jan 1924

The Christian Religion Vs Philonism And Stoicism, Otto P. Kretzmann

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The study of Comparative Religions and the application of the evolutionistic principle to the field of religion have in the last decades lent tremendous impetus to inquiries into the origin of Christianity and the philosophical background of the New Testament. Every remnant of the ancient philosophic literature has been carefully examined by writers with a naturalistic tendency in order to discover some natural explanation for the thought and phraseology of the New Testament. An examination of these alleged points of contact, which are supposed to have exerted such a tremendous influence on nascent Christianity, together with a critical estimate of …

Hydro-Electric Treatment Of Joplin-Miami Zinc Concentrate, David Francis Walsh Jan 1924

Hydro-Electric Treatment Of Joplin-Miami Zinc Concentrate, David Francis Walsh

Masters Theses

"The Electrolytic Process is a process capable of almost unlimited mechanicalization. For obvious reasons it is more economic to treat high grade concentrates; yet, the extremely high grade concentrates are not essential. The Electrolytic Process can treat economically concentrates as low as 30.% zinc under certain conditions. It is significant that as the grade of concentrates offered for treatment is lowered, the treatment cost per ton of concentrates decreases for the Electrolytic Process; whereas, it will increase, as previously stated, for the Retort Process. It is seen then that the position of the Electrolytic Process is strengthened where lower grade …

Lactose Fermenting Bacteria In The Water Supplies Of The Rolla Quadrangle, Joe Beaty Butler Jan 1924

Lactose Fermenting Bacteria In The Water Supplies Of The Rolla Quadrangle, Joe Beaty Butler

Masters Theses

"I. Preliminary investigations. This includes the securing of 139 water samples from water sources in the Rolla Quadrangle, and inoculating 1cc samples from these into Dunham's Lactose tubes and thereby getting lactose gas production checks on the field samples. II. Confirmatory tests. This consisted in the isolation of lactose fermenters on Eosin-Methylene Blue Agar and checking of the cultures back through the lactose and then through dulcitel and saccharose so as to complete Jackson's Classification. 106 cultures were classified in this manner. III. Running through a complete set of tests of pure cultures, so as to completely (as possible) identify …

The Reduction Of Zinc Oxide By Carbon, George August Zeller Jan 1924

The Reduction Of Zinc Oxide By Carbon, George August Zeller

Masters Theses

"In spite of the fact that the reduction of zinc oxide by carbon is the fundamental reaction upon which the pyrometallurgy of zinc is based, there is a decided lack of accurate knowledge concerning the mechanism of the reaction, the temperature at which it begins, and the effect of various factors upon the rate at which it takes place"--Introduction, page 1.

On Plain Carbon Steel, Walter Edward Remmers Jan 1924

On Plain Carbon Steel, Walter Edward Remmers

Masters Theses

"In 1921, an investigation was carried on by Messrs. Howe, Foley and Winlock, under the auspices of the National Research Council, the results of which were published under the title of - "Influence of Temperature, Time and Rate of Cooling on Physical Properties of Carbon Steel," by the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, February, 1923. These results showed that all physical properties of a 0.34 C. percent steel are improved by increasing the rate of cooling from temperatures above the critical range up to a certain rapidity beyond which, there is a gain in strength at the expense …

The Solubilities Of Certain Inorganic Salts In Anhydrous Normal Alcohols, William Orval Keeling Jan 1924

The Solubilities Of Certain Inorganic Salts In Anhydrous Normal Alcohols, William Orval Keeling

Masters Theses

"An examination of the literature shows that extensive studies have been made of the solubilities of inorganic salts in aqueous, normal alcohols, but that little has been done in determining the solubilities in anhydrous alcohols. Northing was found of a systematic study of the solubilities of NaCl, KCl, NaN0₃ and KNO₃ in the lower alcohols over a fairly wide range of temperature. The author has made a study of the solubilities of the above mentioned salts in lower anhydrous normal alcohols at the temperatures 20°C, 25°C, 30°C and 40°C"--Introduction, page 1.

Conductivity And Ionization Of Certain Salts In Absolute Alcohol, Armin Brene Jewell Jan 1924

Conductivity And Ionization Of Certain Salts In Absolute Alcohol, Armin Brene Jewell

Masters Theses

"One of the most striking observations one makes in connection with the study of the conductivities of alcoholic solutions is their great similiarity [sic] to those of aqueous solutions with the exception that the values of the concentrations are very much smaller. The differences are rather of degree than of kind. It will be noted that as the temperature is increased the molecular conductivity increases and the fraction of salt decreases which is what would be expected by analogy"--Discussion, page 43.

Cost Accounting For A Malleable Iron Foundry, Edmund E. Mckune Jan 1924

Cost Accounting For A Malleable Iron Foundry, Edmund E. Mckune

Bachelors’ Theses

An Account Of Experiments In Teaching Reading Devised And Directed, Harry B. Wilson Jan 1924

An Account Of Experiments In Teaching Reading Devised And Directed, Harry B. Wilson

Bachelors’ Theses

The purpose of the experiments was threefold; first, that teachers might have an opportunity to discover the actual conditions in their own class rooms in comparison with statements of writers on education; second, that, in trying out recommended procedures, they might acquire a desire to investigate and develop a scientific attitude toward their work; third, that a more wholesome respect for the opinions of scientific investigators might obtain. The subject of reading is of such fundamental importance and has occupied so prominent a place in the field of investigation that it seemed reasonable to treat it in discussions in teachers' …

Significance Of Labor Turnover, Albert L. Pfund Jan 1924

Significance Of Labor Turnover, Albert L. Pfund

Bachelors’ Theses

The instability of labor has always been a source of annoyance to commerce and industry. But, strange to say, in earlier days it was not thought of as anything more serious. As a general rule, there seemed to be an adequate supply of labor; and if one man quit, the solution was simply - get another. The question of labor turnover as thought of today, however, is one of comparatively recent origin. One of the first references to it was made only a few years ago by Professor John R. Commons, in an article on the "age Earners of Pittsburg", …

The Human Will Is Free, Richard V. Carpenter Jan 1924

The Human Will Is Free, Richard V. Carpenter

Bachelors’ Theses

The freedom of the will is one of the most important questions in philosophy. So much has been written on the subject that it hardly seems worth while to treat it in a thesis in which nothing can be said which has not already been said a number of times. The two opposing parties in the controversy have completed their respective cases; they have fully entrenched themselves behind volumes and volumes of weighty libraries and are now but waiting new recruits. As a matter of fact, though both sides of the debate seem to have exhausted their arguments, though they …

The English Inn In English Literature, Eugene E. Ball Jan 1924

The English Inn In English Literature, Eugene E. Ball

Bachelors’ Theses

Perhaps no institution holds higher rank in, or has had more influence on English literature than the English Inn. Famed alike in song and story, it has come down to us through the centuries as a sacred sanctuary of thought and culture, where the creators of the sagas of our native tongue sought congenial companionship, where the sharp flash of wit, and the quick thrust of repartee kindled inspiration into flame.

The Necessary Relation Of Morality To Literature And Its Apparent Neglect In Our Modern Works, Muriel Bruett Jan 1924

The Necessary Relation Of Morality To Literature And Its Apparent Neglect In Our Modern Works, Muriel Bruett

Bachelors’ Theses

Literature has a purpose beyond itself, the expression of truth, the transmission of knowledge from generat1on to generation, and the elevation and strengthening of the man. It is clear that the purpose of reading is to put ourselves into communication with the best minds of the race. Unless we read a man for all there is in him, we gain little but a disorganized group of pages. Books should be real things. For if we admit that there is an intrinsic value in anything, we must admit the objective value of literature, that there is something which stamps a book …
