Marriage And Divorce, John F. Collopy Jun 1925

Marriage And Divorce, John F. Collopy

Bachelors’ Theses

Throughout the world, a wave of moral laxity is being felt at the present time. This suspension of intrinsic conventions causes many misfortunes not only of an individual, but of a national character, as well. This regrettable situation mirrors itself clearly in our regard for the bond of matrimony, upon which rests our every permanent social and personal good. Moral decadence marked the fall of every kingdom and empire from Babylon to Napoleonic France. It stifled progress by producing a primarily insidious, but an ultimately blatant cancer in the body politic. It struck at the very vitals of all the …

The Philosophy Of Herbert Spencer, Joseph B. Coleman Jun 1925

The Philosophy Of Herbert Spencer, Joseph B. Coleman

Bachelors’ Theses

It might be well at the beginning of this discussion on the philosophy of Herbert Spencer to give a brief biographical sketch concerning his earlier life.

He was born at Derby, England on the 27th of April, 1820. His father, William George Spencer, was a schoolmaster. The religious convictions of his parent familiarized him with the doctrines of the Methodists and Quakers. He declined an offer from his uncle to go to Cambridge and as a result, was practically self taught.

For a few years he was employed as an engineer and giving this up, he became sub- editor of …

The Relation Of Light To Soil Moisture Phenomena And To Water Transmission In Plants, Leon B. Linford Jun 1925

The Relation Of Light To Soil Moisture Phenomena And To Water Transmission In Plants, Leon B. Linford

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

An attempt was made in this laboratory to measure the pressure or capillary potential of soils by a vapor pressure method. The experiment was carried out by placing small cans of soil in dessicators with solutions of known vapor pressure in the bottom. These dessicators were immersed in a constant temperature water bath. It was hoped that by this method the vapor pressure of the soils could be determined and the pressure potentials calculated as will be explained in a later part of this paper. The results were disappointing because the wet soils in dessicators over pure water dried out …

Genetic Studies Of The F3 And F4 Generations Of Sevier X Dicklow Wheat Crosses, Carl Frischknecht May 1925

Genetic Studies Of The F3 And F4 Generations Of Sevier X Dicklow Wheat Crosses, Carl Frischknecht

Biology

In 1919 a number of wheat crosses were made at the Utah Experiment Station by Professor George Stevart, the purpose being to develop a superior strain of wheat for the intermountain region and to provide material for various genetic studies in wheat. While the data presented in this thesis are the results of genetic studies of the F3 and F4 generations of the Sevier X Dicklow grain crosses, mention is also made of several homozygous strains which as a result of this study are now being grown in yield tests and give promise of being superior to either …

Mably On International War And Peace., Kenneth Leeds Holmes May 1925

Mably On International War And Peace., Kenneth Leeds Holmes

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study of Mably’s works was undertaken because of the scant treatment thus far accorded the writings of a philosopher, important in his own century, and peculiarly interesting today in view of the present partial realization of many of his plans for the improvement of society. It was at first intended to make the subject of this paper an exposition of Mably’s communistic theories. That it is not, is partly due to accident. The reading of his works in the order of their composition, necessitated beginning with his Principes des Negotiations which, though not written first, was designed as an …

The Effect Of Sulfur On The Microflora Of The Soil, J. M. Fife May 1925

The Effect Of Sulfur On The Microflora Of The Soil, J. M. Fife

The Greenville soil is an ideal media in which to study the effect of sulfur on the soil microflora due to the abundance of all the required elements with the exception of sulfur, and its most interesting microflora (6) (7).

Some Particular Aspects Of The Influence Of Greek Tragedy On Roman Tragedy, Mary Gaunt May 1925

Some Particular Aspects Of The Influence Of Greek Tragedy On Roman Tragedy, Mary Gaunt

Bachelors’ Theses

Our word tragedy is directly derived from the Greek words: tragos, goat, and ode, song, goatsong. In the spring Dionysius, God of Wine, was worshipped. Human sacrifice early gave way to the sacrifice of animals. Groups of worshippers, dressed as satyrs, sur¬ rounded the priest while the goat was sacrificed and fitting rites observed in honor of the much loved God. Gradually the recitation of the dramatic parts fell to one person, and the chorus joined in at the end.

There Is A Natural Law, Anthony Francis Makowski May 1925

There Is A Natural Law, Anthony Francis Makowski

Bachelors’ Theses

Law in its widest sense is a rule of action; it is some norm regulating how a thing should act. In This sense all existing things act according to some rule or norm. Experience abounds with sufficient proof of this. Scientists moreover attest to the existence of such laws and the object of the natural sciences is to search these laws out. Thus men, eminent in that field, have discovered and formulated such laws as, the laws of inertia, falling bodies, light, levers, etc. In this sense we speak of chemical laws, meaning the constant uniform norm according to which …

Miracles Are Not Only Possible But Have Actually Occurred, Cyril N. Mckinnon May 1925

Miracles Are Not Only Possible But Have Actually Occurred, Cyril N. Mckinnon

Bachelors’ Theses

Miracles are the badges which identify the ambassadors of Jesus Christ on earth, the King’s signet by which we may know that its bearer speaks Divine Truth. They surpass human power, they must come from God, and therefore if they are advanced in confirmation of any claim, or in proof of any truth. th®t claim must be valid and that truth must be certain, because it is approved by God Himself, who can neither deceive nor be deceived. Now Christianity offers miracles as one of its undeniable credentials. In fact, were it not for that greatest of all miracles, the …

The Influence Of The Editorial In American Newspapers Is Waning, M. Ruth Reynolds May 1925

The Influence Of The Editorial In American Newspapers Is Waning, M. Ruth Reynolds

Bachelors’ Theses

The jointed thumbs of old man Public Opinion are turning slowly downward, and the press is out of tune with the old medley popularly called "Editorial Influence". The time honored power of the members of the Fourth Estate to guide the embryo opinions of a reading public into channels properly directed by the policy of a paper is slowly being metamorphosed into a condition in which the newspapers themselves will be subject to public opinion and dependent upon it, for whatever power and influence they are to possess.

The Value Of Newspaper Advertising, Amy Evelyn Wagner May 1925

The Value Of Newspaper Advertising, Amy Evelyn Wagner

Bachelors’ Theses

If Shakespeare were living today he could truly say, "All the world’s a stage set for advertising," The setting, so elaborately intricate, enticing and compelling in its demands would no doubt be a picture of modern commerce, and upon the throne of this great power would be seated the King of Advertising, newspaper advertising. Justly so, for in order that commerce may create a desire for her wares, it "needs that power, with its skill, thought, resources and judgment, virile energy, largeness of mental growth and equipment, combined with a creative force that accomplishes things, which is called advertising,"

Craniotomy And Abortion Are Moral And Social Evils, Alvin Ralph Kutschera May 1925

Craniotomy And Abortion Are Moral And Social Evils, Alvin Ralph Kutschera

Bachelors’ Theses

An artificial division of arguments has "been essayed in this thesis for two external reasons: physicians and physicians. The physician performing craniotomy adopts the operation as the last resort in a "bad case, when death is imminent whereas the abortionist operates for many and sundry reasons, some good and many bad, base, and criminal. The two types of operators being entirely different, the operations they perform have been kept apart, tho craniotomy and direct abortion are direct attacks upon the life of the fetus, and an argument against one is a lance in the side of the other.

The Kentucky Mountains During The Civil War., Artus James 1891-1979 May 1925

The Kentucky Mountains During The Civil War., Artus James 1891-1979

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the early days of 1861, Kentucky, torn between her allegiance to the federal government and her sympathy for the South, with her citizenry so divided that hardly a family in the state stood united, vainly endeavored to carve out for herself a niche of security in the midst of the chaos of war. Continuing her position as one of the United States, she yet attempted to assume a position of neutrality towards the two belligerents--the United States of which she was a part and the Confederacy.

A Study Of The Reading Habits Of Adults, Burton K. Farnsworth May 1925

A Study Of The Reading Habits Of Adults, Burton K. Farnsworth

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

For several years past, some of the best students of americancolleges have been graduating with a major in English; and have gone forth full of hope and enthusiasm to perfect the oral and written expression of Young America, and to implant in them a taste for, and an appreciation of, worthwhile literature. While there can be no doubt that the training of teachers has steadily improved, and the time allotted to the study of English has constantly increased; yet critics say, and people generally believe them, that young America is still untaught. These critics declare that altho our boys and …

The Possibilities Of City Manager Government For Utah Communities, George S. Bates May 1925

The Possibilities Of City Manager Government For Utah Communities, George S. Bates

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Municipal functioning in Utah has been written about more or less from a theoretical point of view, but very little has been done by way of making careful surveys of city administration in the state. This is especially the case in so far as city manager government is concerned. The writer recognizes that a subject dealing with "The Possibilities of City Manager Government for Utah Communities" is very inclusive, and under other circumstances would possible be too broad in its scope for a thesis of this length. The study of city budget systems, or of municipal lighting in Utah, or …

The Alkali And Water Relations Of Atriplex Carnosa, A. R. Croft May 1925

The Alkali And Water Relations Of Atriplex Carnosa, A. R. Croft

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The question of alkali has many phases. Much work has been done on this important phase of soil science, particularly as it affects the agricultural products and native vegetation. These two phases of the subject naturally forced themselves upon men who tilled the soil for a livlihood and in late years thay have occupied the attention of many soil investigators. The reliability of this indicator value of native vegetation, (1) on a given soil has long since been established in a general way. This generalization has been used rather extensively in making a hasty survey of large possible agricultural areas. …

Early Political Organization Of Cache County From 1856-1870, Margaret Woodside

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The Mormons like all other pioneers of the West were desirous of spreading out and occupying the Territory which they had acquired. The policy of their great leader and colonizer, President Brigham Young, was to encourage these settlements and develop the land so that the State might take some part in the commercial activities of the country. "Utah grew up from a number of colonies sent out from time to time by Brigham Young and his council. These bands were placed under able and experienced captains. Hence the settlements and counties of the Territory at the outset grew up rather …

A Correlation Of Stability And Intelligence Tests, J. Byron Birch May 1925

A Correlation Of Stability And Intelligence Tests, J. Byron Birch

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

It is my purpose in this paper to study the correlation between the results secured from the Army Alpha Intelligence test and the Star Mirror Stability test. I recognise the fact that intelligence is the most important factor in human conduct and therefore do not want to discount any reliable, objective intelligence test. It is admitted by most educators that there are other important factors in human conduct. Thorndike stated, "stability has a great weight in mentality". Goddard, in his work on Levels of Intelligence, at Princeton University, said, "I know there are other factors, but solve the X now …

The Doctrine Of Resurrection Unto Life Eternal As Presented By St. Paul In His First Espistle To The Corinthians, Walter Enge Apr 1925

The Doctrine Of Resurrection Unto Life Eternal As Presented By St. Paul In His First Espistle To The Corinthians, Walter Enge

Bachelor of Divinity

First a brief word in regard to the word resurrection. Whenever we shall speak of the resurrection, we shall always mean the resurrection of the body. Moreover we shall limit ourselves in this discussion to the resurrection unto life eternal, because this is the resurrection that is of such vital concern to us and to all Christians. This resurrection, not that of the wicked, was the one concerning which Paul desired to instruct the Corinthians. Therefore he speaks of the resurrection unto life eternal almost exclusively when treating the doctrine of the resurrection in his First Epistle to the Corinthians. …

The Rise Of The Banana Industry And Its Influence On Caribbean Countries, John L. Williams Feb 1925

The Rise Of The Banana Industry And Its Influence On Caribbean Countries, John L. Williams

Historical Dissertations & Theses

The phenomenal growth of the banana industry is one of the most outstanding features of commerce during the last half century. Like the banana tree itself, this industry has grown to stupendous size in a relatively short span of time. Why has this business continued to grow and why at the present time is it still expanding? The answer is that the banana has become internationally recognized as a very nourishing food and as populations increase, so must he banana trade increase in order to supply the demand. In order to thoroughly understand the banana industry one must first acquaint …
