The Gift Of Teaching, Anthony C. Katze-Miller Jun 1925

The Gift Of Teaching, Anthony C. Katze-Miller

Bachelors’ Theses

It is the object of the present Thesis, first, to prove the reality of the Gift of Teaching; to analyze it, or to determine the elements of which it is composed, and thirdly, to show how it may be cultivated and improved, or even acquired, where it is naturally wanting.

The Investment Trust And The American Investor, Anthony B. Ronzani Jun 1925

The Investment Trust And The American Investor, Anthony B. Ronzani

Bachelors’ Theses

We Americans are familiar with the term "trust" in many different forms, but as yet, not to any great extent under the name or an "investment trust." We are fairly cognizant of such forms as: the trust company, trusts, express trusts, equipment trusts, and trusts under wills. Writers on the subject of "trusts" have defined the term in different ways. Sometime they mean °legal trusts," the form taken by the great prototype, the Standard Oil Company. In such a sense a trust may be defined as an organization managed by a board of trustees to whom all the capital stock …

No Par Value Stock, Nathan Weinberg Jun 1925

No Par Value Stock, Nathan Weinberg

Bachelors’ Theses

"Capital stock, whether of the type that represents all the assets of the corporation or the type that represents merely the residual equity after all other claims have been satisfied, involves two distinct ideas--a participation in the rights of ownership and a valuation in this anticipation. This latter is the par value. It is the less important. The stockholder can never collect, like the bondholder, the par value of his security from the corporation. Even though paid for in full and representing for a short time the full and actual value, the equality passes with the first business transaction, for …

Cost Accounts For The Contractor, Urban A. Pilon Jun 1925

Cost Accounts For The Contractor, Urban A. Pilon

Bachelors’ Theses

The author has selected the subject of Contractor's Cost Accounts because of the widely divergent opinions of those men who have written the few articles and books that are to be found on the subject, and because of the importance of this phase of accounting to the Contractor.

The author has, in his opinion, found most of the material written to be useless to the contractor because, while theoretically correct from an accounting standpoint, it is not practical enough to be put to use. There is either some essential part lacking, there is no check against error, or, as in …

Loans And Discounts, Ruth M. Thomas Jun 1925

Loans And Discounts, Ruth M. Thomas

Bachelors’ Theses

The rapid rise of industrial activity in the United States has led to the need of a sound credit structure in order to maintain and help business which has taken great leaps and bounds in the direction of consolidation of small interests. Business is now done on such a large scale that it is impossible to proceed without the assistance of outside financial aid, both for permanent capital and funds needed only in times of greater activity than the permanent investment can withstand. The ability to get this advancement of short time funds shows the credit which a concern has. …

There Is A Natural Law, Ambrose H. Sullivan Jr. Jun 1925

There Is A Natural Law, Ambrose H. Sullivan Jr.

Bachelors’ Theses

Is this great cosmos in which we live controlled by blind unintelligent forces? Is it possible to concede that the unity of action of the forces of nature is the result of chance? Can the effect so produced be the result of mere accidental causes? There seems to be a lack of consistency between cause and effect, if such is the case. We cannot dismiss this by saying that it just happened! That is just evading the issue. Let us get down to bed rock principles and face this problem with an unprejudiced and unbiased mind. We have immediate and …

Farmers Co-Operative Marketing Associations, Lloyd Victor Weyenberg Jun 1925

Farmers Co-Operative Marketing Associations, Lloyd Victor Weyenberg

Bachelors’ Theses

In the United States a large number of co-operative stores have been started at various times, but comparatively few of them have survived for a long period. However, it is not so much the consumer co-operative societies, but the farmers distributive or marketing societies in the United States, that we are interested in. The following chapters will deal exclusively with the co-operative marketing movement as it affects the farmers of the United States.

The Scholastic Concept Of The Human Soul, Harold Vincenz Shoenecker Jun 1925

The Scholastic Concept Of The Human Soul, Harold Vincenz Shoenecker

Bachelors’ Theses

"If not here, then elsewhere," (Stoddard). Judging from a purely physical and material basis, death seems to be the end of all; but if we fix our thoughts upon that bit of consciousness within us, that something which recognizes the Moral Law within our breasts, that, which at some time or other has asked in many ways, "whence have I come, and whither will I go?", that something, does it exist? The mere fact that our consciousness prompts us along these lines, ought to encourage us to continue the thinking process, and look a little deeper into the questions, and …

Farm Accounting, W. M. Daley Jun 1925

Farm Accounting, W. M. Daley

Bachelors’ Theses

From the literature on the subject nearly allot which has been published during the last five or six years, one might be led to believe that there was some thing strange and uncommon about keeping records of business transactions on the farm. In the last several years, many record book and bulletin on farm bookkeeping and farm costs have been published. With very few exceptions these bulletins deal with the subject from a purely statistical point of view, without involving principles of double entry book-keeping or the fundamentals of accounting theory. Very often they fail to provide for proper correlation …

Gerhart Hauptmann, The Novelist, Homer G. Deerhake Jun 1925

Gerhart Hauptmann, The Novelist, Homer G. Deerhake

Bachelors’ Theses

A new period in German Literature arose about l880. This new form of literature replaced the old conservative form of Goethe and Schiller. This new period in German Literature has been called Modernism and has been represented by some as a knowing yet pure woman, in the attitude of advance, inspiring mankind by her perfection of all earthly beauty. Gerhart Hauptmann soon became a member of this group. The Modernists were generally looked upon as faithful adherents of the dogma of Naturalism, namely that man's destiny is unalterably shaped by his environment; human fete proceeds from a parallelogram of forces …

The Investment Desirability Of Public Utility Securities, Byron G. Ansorge

Bachelors’ Theses

The development of the economic structure of the United States has brought into existence many new agencies and terms unknown a century ago. Industrial integration has caused changes in the business life of the nation today which viewed a century ago would have been considered extremely radical but which are, in reality, decidedly conservative aids in the stable progress of our economic institutions.

Investments, Harold Joseph Bruce Jun 1925

Investments, Harold Joseph Bruce

Bachelors’ Theses

From time to time in our industrial history certain groups of events occur and recur in close relation to each other; and this juxtaposition of events seems to bear approximately the same relation at each reoccurrance. Business expansion follows contraction; contraction follows expansion. The business cycle is a fact proved by past experience; its existence should be accepted as such by the investor and his actions guided accordingly.

The Dramatic Technique Of John Galsworthy, Othmar A. Bittman Jun 1925

The Dramatic Technique Of John Galsworthy, Othmar A. Bittman

Bachelors’ Theses

Almost a score of years before Ibsen ushered in the New Drama with his monumental series of social dramas, he said: "The experience of all countries has sufficiently established the fact that dramatic art, in every age in which it has been cultivated, has in a higher degree than any other, shown itself an important factor in the education of the people--a very obvious explanation of which fact is to be found in the drama1 s more intimate and direct relation to reality; in other words, in its greater intelligibility and in its easier and more general accessibility to the …

It is an essential factor in rate making for railroad companies, and it is bound up with most questions of taxation. The Trade Paper And Business, Walter Belson Jun 1925

The Trade Paper And Business, Walter Belson

Bachelors’ Theses

Back in the days when man struck fire from flint and steel and gleamed his daily food from bush and stream, no such thing as collective industry existed. Personal industry directed solely toward a necessary objective, forms the humble background for that which we today blandly designate as "industry", without concerning ourselves particularly with the derivation of definition of the term.

The Existence Of God, Lawrence Coughlin Jun 1925

The Existence Of God, Lawrence Coughlin

Bachelors’ Theses

The proofs regarding the existence of God are of two kinds - the indirect and the direct. The former show that one's knowledge of God's existence is a necessary outcome of his rational being, while the latter present God to us as the only ultimate Sufficient Cause of the physical effects we perceive within and around us. Consequently, the indirect proofs are known to us as the moral argument, since they concern themselves with man's rational being - his intellect, and the direct proofs are termed, the metaphysical, because His existence as the ultimate Sufficient Cause is required by the …

Oral English In The Elementary School, Pauline Ehbets Jun 1925

Oral English In The Elementary School, Pauline Ehbets

Bachelors’ Theses

Since oral English is natural and necessary to the child, it was long thought that instruction in the mother tongue was unnecessary. The establishment of the High Schools in 1876 made definite demands in literary expression upon the elementary schools. Today there is a growing conviction that it is a basic part of every branch of the curriculum, and that it should be a separate study only for definite technical demands...

Investment Trust Companies, Harold Edward Hayes Jun 1925

Investment Trust Companies, Harold Edward Hayes

Bachelors’ Theses

The investment trust company is not a new financial institution, for it has been in existence for a period of one hundred years or more. It has seen its greatest development, however, in Great Britain, due chiefly to her financial supremacy, and to English Capital seeking higher rates abroad. An investment trust company may be defined as a financial institution set up for the purpose of making it possible for the investor to obtain a high degree of safety in his investment by buying securities of the trust, which securities are backed by various other securities. The investment trust is …

Miracles, Francis H. Hayes Jun 1925

Miracles, Francis H. Hayes

Bachelors’ Theses

The purpose of this treatise is to furnish as complete and as clear a treatment of the subject of miracles as possible. Misunderstanding and ignorance more than In tended opposition is in all probability the cause or much controversy in this matter. Many outside the Catholic Church have misconceptions of just what we hold in regard to this subject. Others have little or no idea of the tremendous amount of evidence accumulated during the existence of the human race to substantiate our claims. Many more know nothing of Lourdes and its record of the supernatural marvels. Their stand is - …

The Appeal Of One Act Play, Aloysius J. O'Rourke Jun 1925

The Appeal Of One Act Play, Aloysius J. O'Rourke

Bachelors’ Theses

The appeal of the one act play has become so universal that today the force and vigor of the movement is seen and felt throughout the civilized world, from far off Japan even to the southern republics of the Americas. As strong in its appeal as the longer drama, this new art, if such it may be called, is rapidly gaining such favor that we can look with gratitude upon the wide achievement it has made by the media of the 'Little Theatre" movement which has sponsored this new form of entertainment till it now has almost attained its full …

There Exists A Natural Law, Joseph Erhardt Koperski Jun 1925

There Exists A Natural Law, Joseph Erhardt Koperski

Bachelors’ Theses

In this thesis it is maintained, that the natural law is universal, that is to say, that the natural law is promulgated or made known to all men and that no one possessing the use of sober reason can doubt or be invincibly ignorant of the natural law. Thus we speak of its universality by reason of its promulgation. However, this does not signify that all men have the same knowledge of the natural law, nor that all men know all what the natural law prescribes. But it does mean that all men enjoying the use of sane reason can …

The Fictional Influence Of Eighteenth Century Essays On The Modern Short-Story, Carl Hoffmans Haight Jun 1925

The Fictional Influence Of Eighteenth Century Essays On The Modern Short-Story, Carl Hoffmans Haight

The short-story as we find it today is widely read and enjoyed by all classes of readers. Late in the nineteenth century critics of literature came to recognize in the short-story a definite species, having possibilities of its own and also vigorous limitations. The form as we have it now, has been a slow evolution through the centuries of advancing civilization.

Accounting For Steam Roads With Particular Emphasis On The Classification Of Income, Profit And Loss, And General Balance Sheet Accounts For Steam Roads In Accordance With Section 20 Of The Act To Regulate Commerce Effective On July 1, 1914. Accompanying With All Subsequent Amendments, John Joseph Hudson

Bachelors’ Theses

History of Public Utility Regulation: The term "public utility" refers to a class of industries in the performance of whose service the public is concerned in a peculiar way. These undertakings are described as affected with a public interest. Steam and electric railroads, express and sleeping car lines, telephone and cable companies fall into this definition. The public right to regulate is based on the common law, but it has been strengthened by statutes and court decisions. The services these companies perform are a legitimate function of the state. Such enterprises exist by public grant of monopolistic privilege.
