Imagination: A Study Of Types With Special Reference To The Imagery Of Francis Thompson And Edmund Spenser, Hugh John Deeny May 1928

Imagination: A Study Of Types With Special Reference To The Imagery Of Francis Thompson And Edmund Spenser, Hugh John Deeny

Bachelors’ Theses

Curiosity is doubtless the most valuable asset of the mental make-up of man. In recent years the natural interest of human beings in "hoe it works" has turned within to the investigation of themselves, and how and why they behave like humans. "Psychology" has become a word to conjure with. Witness the space it and allied subjects occupy on Chautauqua programs, in newspapers, and in magazines. Books attempting to explain our everyday actions and our exceptional ones have become "best sellers" "Complexes," "inhibitions," "reactions," "stimuli," and a host of other technical terms are familiarly heard in drawing-rooms and even on …

The Relation Of Journalism To Literature In America, Kenneth F. Crane May 1928

The Relation Of Journalism To Literature In America, Kenneth F. Crane

Bachelors’ Theses

Literature in America has led an eventful career for almost three hundred years . There were first, the almost barren years of the early settlers, when the task of sustaining life left little leisure time for either reading or writing, and the lack of printing facilities discouraged the rearing of a literature. Among the literary pioneers who surmounted these difficulties were the Puritan historians, sermonists and poets.

More fruitful years followed. The essayists, the New York school. the New England school, the poets and prose writers of the South, and finally the breezy Westerners all had their hand in producing …

The Anatomy Of The Timber Rattlesnake, Ruth H. Heinemann May 1928

The Anatomy Of The Timber Rattlesnake, Ruth H. Heinemann

Bachelors’ Theses

Snakes are the most highly specialized of all reptiles. The absence of limbs, in itself, is a great specialization. They possess a great modification of the jaws which enables them to engulf large prey entire. Probably the most out standing specialization is the remarkable modification of dentition in the venomous snakes. The so-called fangs are nothing more than teeth modified to a great degree.

The Distribution, Taxonomy And Ecology Of The Genus Salix Of Utah County, Utah, Kenneth Edward Weight May 1928

The Distribution, Taxonomy And Ecology Of The Genus Salix Of Utah County, Utah, Kenneth Edward Weight

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose or this paper is to make the willows of Utah end especially Utah County familiar to persons of moderate taxonomic skill. The Willow Family has become somewhat neglected by classes in taxonomy and the botanist in general because of not having a key -- except in one or two cases, that takes into consideration characters other than the fruits or capsules. To identify a willow in late summer is almost impossible by the beginning botanist, because few, if any, flowers, fruits and capsules can be found. In this paper external cheracters will be considered in descriptions. It must …

The Negro In Literature, A. W. Arnaud May 1928

The Negro In Literature, A. W. Arnaud

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis traces the development of the Negro in American literature from its origins in the spirituals through the flowering of the "New Negro" Renaissance of the early twentieth century. Arnaud opens by defining literature as the artistic record of a people's inner life and argues that Negro literary expression developed first through song, tracing the movement from oral spirituals through the early poetry of the enslaved and freed population toward increasingly sophisticated literary forms.

The thesis presents Paul Laurence Dunbar as the foremost early exponent of Negro poetry, examining his biography and his work in both classic English verse …

Several wheat characters have been shown to exhibit rather complicated inheritance. Examples are such characters as culm length, spike density, and awn classes. This paper reports a study of the inheritance and of the correlated inheritance of these and some other plant characters in a cross between a hybrid of Dicklow X Sevier (III C 18) with Federation.

Should The Utah Law As It Applies To Inheritance Be Modified?, Lorenzo H. Hatch May 1928

Should The Utah Law As It Applies To Inheritance Be Modified?, Lorenzo H. Hatch

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In the United States, until recently, the inheritance tax has been employed principally as a war measure. The first one imposed was the stamp act of July 6, 1797, which was repealed five years later. The war revenue act of July 1, 1862, was repealed July 14 1870. The revenue act of August 27, 1894 was declared unconstitutional because of its income tax feature. The war revenue act of June 13, 1989 was repealed April 13, 1902. The present federal estate tax was formed September 8, 1916. It was later amended March 3, 1917, and was altered appreciably in the …

A Study Of The Economic Relationship Of The International Smelter To Agriculture In Tooele Valley, Harvey A. Kirk May 1928

A Study Of The Economic Relationship Of The International Smelter To Agriculture In Tooele Valley, Harvey A. Kirk

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Utah's position among the great commonwealths depends to some extent upon the degree of development of the agricultural industry of the State. But as a producer of wealth, the mining industry exceeds agriculture. The total annual value of Utah farm products is about $39,000,000 while the total output from the mines is valued at $82,663,000. The operation of the mines, reduction mills, and smelters necessitate the employment of a large number of people who swell the population of the State, and consume a large part of the agricultural products. Utah, which is an inland State, possessing, as yet, few large …

The Status Of Teacher Rating In Utah, Charles P. Mcgregor May 1928

The Status Of Teacher Rating In Utah, Charles P. Mcgregor

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Any satisfactory amount of literature or information as to the condition of teacher rating in Utah is not available. The writer therefore has felt justified in making a search for such information.

Education is one of the biggest businesses of the state, a business with which nearly all are concerned. It is a business which calls for vast sums of money to finance its cause in buildings and equipment. A part of this equipment is the teacher, and a most vital part, for it rests largely upon the teacher to shape the livest of boys and girls into worthy citizens. …

Lessons To Be Learnt From The History And Development Of The Halle-Leipzig Mission In India, H Earl Miller Apr 1928

Lessons To Be Learnt From The History And Development Of The Halle-Leipzig Mission In India, H Earl Miller

Bachelor of Divinity

We may, without doing violence to truth, speak of the unbroken continuity of the Halle-Leipzig mission from the days of Ziegenbalg down to the present time, a period of 222 years. In more than one respect, this mission has been the outstanding force in the history of missionary endeavor in India, and we may well expect to profit from an examination of its history and development.

The Christ Of St. John's Gospel, Leonard W. Koehler Apr 1928

The Christ Of St. John's Gospel, Leonard W. Koehler

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose in writing this treatise on the Christ in St. John's Gospel is most ably expressed by the Beloved Disciple himself when he says in his gospel 20,31, "But these things are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God.” Jesus did so many things outside of those recorded in the gospels that John says, "I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written", 21,25. Therefore, with the help of God, the present writer, too, shall try to briefly show from this one gospel that Jesus, …

Speeches In The Book Of Acts, C C. Nieman Apr 1928

Speeches In The Book Of Acts, C C. Nieman

Bachelor of Divinity

While a discussion or the isagogical questions of Acts does not belong into the sphere of this treatise properly, we will find that a consideration of the most pertinent questions in the field will be helpful and explanatory of various phrases which will be used. We will, however, limit ourselves to only a few of the most important and evident questions, lest we stray to far afield. Again, let me add, that no arguments pro and con will be advanced, but only the results and conclusions of the most eminent scholars in the field will be presented, in order to …

The Kingly Office Of Christ In The Old Testament, Clarence Peters

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The Natural Law And The Natural Knowledge Of God And Their Relation To Conscience, Richard R. Caemmerer

The Doctrine Of Christ In The Apocalypse, Walter Ellwanger Apr 1928

The Doctrine Of Christ In The Apocalypse, Walter Ellwanger

Bachelor of Divinity

More have been led astray by vagaries and false notions received from the Apocalypse of Saint John than from any other book of the Bible. Luther wrote four centuries ago: "Es haben wohl viel sich daran versucht, aber bis auf den heutigen Tag nichts Gewisees aufbracht, etliche viel ungeschicktes Dinges aus ihren Kopf hineingebraeuet." (Vol. XIV, 130.) This warning applies today, and most certainly all who attempt to write anything on such a marvellous book as this have in common the feeling of trepidation and incapacity for such a task. It is evident that mysteries, problems, and difficulties will always …

The Conception Of God In Modern Philosophy: A Presentation Of The Views Of Josiah Royce, Henri Bergson, William James And H.G. Wells, H A. Basilius Apr 1928

The Conception Of God In Modern Philosophy: A Presentation Of The Views Of Josiah Royce, Henri Bergson, William James And H.G. Wells, H A. Basilius

Bachelor of Divinity

In defining the scope of our paper, we have tried to hold before us several very general objectives. In accordance with our thesis we shall, of course, treat the religious speculations of the above named philosophers. We shall nevertheless also show the roots of the respective systems from which these speculations take their source. We shall also attempt to show the endeavors of harmonizing-if the expression may be pardoned-religio-philosophic thought with the substrata of revealed religion together with the fact of and cause for the inevitable failure of such attempts. And finally, we hope to point out on the basis …

Church Polity Up To 325 A.D. With Special Reference To The Apostolic Succession, Hugo Ness Apr 1928

Church Polity Up To 325 A.D. With Special Reference To The Apostolic Succession, Hugo Ness

Bachelor of Divinity

Differences in church organization today are directly proportional to the differences in doctrine. As the actions of a man are bit the result of his beliefs we are justified in ascertaining his tenets by observing his actions. But in any system of church organization the arrangement should be that by which the motive principle, i.e, faith, reaches its maximum of efficiency. And here, if anywhere, the doctrine lends the distinctive mark to the organization. Thus, if fault is to be found, the root of the evil lies in false doctrine. And yet, to argue Church Polity on the grounds of …

Applications Of Infinite Products, Lillian Schnell Apr 1928

Applications Of Infinite Products, Lillian Schnell

Bachelors’ Theses

Jacob Nicolaus Bernoulli (1654-1705) wrote a work on "Ars Conjectandi." It was published eight years after his death. The work consists of four parts. The second part is on permutations and combinations, which Bernoulli used in a proof of the binomial theorem for the case of positive integral exponents. The book contains a formula for the sum of the rth powers of the first n integers. This involves the famous Bernouillian numbers. Bernouilli boasted that by means of his formula he could calculate "Intra semi-quadrantem Horae" the sum of the 10th power: the first thousand integers.

Behaviorism: An Exposition And Critical Examination, Philip S. Clapp Jan 1928

Behaviorism: An Exposition And Critical Examination, Philip S. Clapp

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

Behaviorism may be most easily defined after contrasting it with other forms of psychology. Until the advent of behaviorism in 1912, all psychology was built upon a subject matter called consciousness or mind, as definitions of psychology show: James: "Psychology is the description and explanation of states of consciousness as such." Angell: " Psychology is commonly defined as the science of consciousness... Consciousness we can only define in terms of itself." Thorndike: "Human psychology deals with the thoughts and feelings of human beings and seeks to explain the facts of intellect, character, and personal life." Seashore: "Psychology is the science …

The Doctrine Of The Resurrection In The Old Testament, William E. Meyer Jan 1928

The Doctrine Of The Resurrection In The Old Testament, William E. Meyer

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The doctrine of the resurrection-, of the body is fundamental to the Christian faith. It is so closely linked to all articles of our religion that if robbed from its setting our whole system of Christian doctrine would become a purposeless aimless jumble of strange notions. This doctrine permeates the whole Christian conception of the divine plan of salvation, supplying it with a purpose. What Dorner says of Israel that “it has the idea of teleology as a kind of a soul” applies to the Christian religion. The final purpose of every act of God is the salvation of mankind. …

Irregularities In The Productivity Of The Fry Sand In The Smith-Ellis Pool Of Northwest Brown County, Texas, Willard Ardell Schaeffer Jr. Jan 1928

Irregularities In The Productivity Of The Fry Sand In The Smith-Ellis Pool Of Northwest Brown County, Texas, Willard Ardell Schaeffer Jr.

Professional Degree Theses

"The Fry Sand of Northwest Brown County, Texas, as ordinarily defined, consists of irregularly distributed lenticular sand bodies of varying thickness, ranging up to more than thirty feet in some localities. It is quite generally conceded to be a member of the upper Strawn Group of the Pennsylvanian of Texas.

The Fry Sand is highly unconformable with relation to the strata both above and below, and is subject to abrupt changes of thickness within distances of but a few yards. It generally occurs as a light grey to white, fairly fine-grained, quite pure quartz sand, and where it is present …

Typical Methods Of Learning, Esther Zemke Jan 1928

Typical Methods Of Learning, Esther Zemke

Bachelors’ Theses

In discussing methods of learning at all, it may be well to define the word method. What is meant when one speaks of method? One dictionary definition is a mode of procedure, a manner, or way as a method of teaching. Dewey defines it in this way, "Method means that arrangement of subject matter which makes it most effective for use." If this definition is used, a relationship between method and subject matter must be conceded, the one cannot be isolated from the other although the attempt is still being made in many schools of today. Some of the dangers …

The Origin Of Adventitious Roots In Coleus, Ethel Belk Jan 1928

The Origin Of Adventitious Roots In Coleus, Ethel Belk

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It has long been known that adventitious roots develop from shoots and that adventitious shoots develop from roots. This fact is an important one to the horticulturist in propagating plants by stem or, root cuttings. The point of origin of these structures has not been fully presented. There have been various assumptions mad e as to where and how the adventitious structures arise. To avoid confusion, it is best to indicate that adventitious structures are those which are added to the plant; they are not the normal structures of the plant but are superfluous. They are not, however, superfluous for …

Reversal Of Polarity In Some Woody Dicotyledonous Angiosperms, Ida J. Rude Jan 1928

Reversal Of Polarity In Some Woody Dicotyledonous Angiosperms, Ida J. Rude

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

There has for some time existed a theory regarding organized or possibly unorganized formative substances which flow in different directions in the plant tissue and give to the supposedly polarized meristematic tissues of the plant the power to develop to maintain roots from one given or predetermined extremity and shoots from the opposite extremity only. According to theory – in case of the reversal of the position of these ends in relation to moisture, a corresponding reversal in type of plant organ produced will not ensue and persist. The experiment under discussion in this paper was carried out in an …

Success, Failure, And Withdrawal Of Butler University Students, Matriculating During The Years 1919-1923 Inclusive, Leslie Blaine Maxwell Jan 1928

Success, Failure, And Withdrawal Of Butler University Students, Matriculating During The Years 1919-1923 Inclusive, Leslie Blaine Maxwell

Graduate Thesis Collection

...Suggests the great parade of American boys and girls who enter and leave our colleges each year. It is surprising that this condition has existed for a long time with little, if any, scientific investigation as to the reasons why these boys and girls withdraw before completing the course. Considering the number of institutions of higher learning in the United States, very little has been done to solve the problem.
