Thesis: Relation Between Eschatology And Jesus' Ethics, Robert L. Sutherland Jan 1927

Thesis: Relation Between Eschatology And Jesus' Ethics, Robert L. Sutherland

Honors Papers

Speculations on the final destiny of man and of the world have busied wise man's minds of many ages. Although findings on the future life no longer captivate our thoughts as during the Middle Ages, yet they are still a by no means neglected part of almost every man's theology. The change that we label by the common term death appears to be universally imposed upon mankind. To be aware of the approaching end of life-as-it-is stimulates many of us to probe the hereafter. That search and its fruits become an integral part of our theology. Has this fact of …

The Influence Of Religion Upon The Works Of Man, Bernice Marie Williams Jan 1927

The Influence Of Religion Upon The Works Of Man, Bernice Marie Williams

All Theses

The unity of any human race out of which grows the brotherhood of man, forms the first great moral basis of Altruism. No people can sucessfully accomplish any phase of work without involving religion in its aims, moralities and religion then the principal means by which one can modify men into whatever one likes provided that one is given time enough in which to do it. Yet nothing is perhaps more openly questioned today than the social power of religion, it is not any purpose fully the science of religion, but we must know something about the real nature or …

A Study Of Certain Physical And Chemical Characteristics Of Flaxseed And Of Linseed Oil, With Especial Reference To Date Of Harvest, Leo F. Puhr Jan 1927

A Study Of Certain Physical And Chemical Characteristics Of Flaxseed And Of Linseed Oil, With Especial Reference To Date Of Harvest, Leo F. Puhr

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

From the review of the foregoing literature on flax, it is evident that little work has ever been done on the chemical composition of flax. Most of the work on flax up to the present time has been confined to the diseases of flax, principally the securing of varieties that are resistant to wilt. In an attempt to secure information in regard to the factors affecting the physical characteristics and chemical composition of flaxseed the following work has been done in this experiment: 1. The effect of time of harvesting upon physical characteristics of the seed. 2. The relation of …

A Study In The Metabolism Of The Adult Honey Bee, M. D. Farrar Jan 1927

A Study In The Metabolism Of The Adult Honey Bee, M. D. Farrar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The study of metabolism in the higher forms of life has been carried on for many year and much has been found out that has been of great importance in understanding the way things live and grow. It has been only in the last few years that attention has been given to this phase of the work in insects. The extensive work that has been carried on concerning metabolism in men and animals is the basis for the more recent researches on the lower forms including the microorganisms. Before this work could be carried out on the small forms it …

A Study Of High School And College Grades, Ivy Bernice Wilkinson Jan 1927

A Study Of High School And College Grades, Ivy Bernice Wilkinson

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The task I have set myself is one to which my interest has been led by a varied experience in high school teaching followed by several years teaching in college where our high school product is largely disposed of. In all that experience the giving of grades was a bugbear, a necessary evil apparently, and it occurred to me that if those grades had or could be made to have some value beyond the moment, sone directive or prognostic value, they might lose their 111-reputation in the minds of both pupil and teacher. With this thought in mind I interviewed …

A Sociological Study Of The Indian Caste System, George H. Singh Jan 1927

A Sociological Study Of The Indian Caste System, George H. Singh

Graduate Thesis Collection

Whenever people in America and elsewhere outside of India hear anything about the Indian caste system, they show a great contempt, even to disgust, in their attitude towards this ancient institution which has been instrumental, to a very large degree in moulding the destinies of India up to this day. To a casual observer this institution is but "a monster custom" (Low, S., Vision of India, p. 260) which saps the character of people leaving them degenerate in their own group and degraded in the modern world. He condemns it from every angle, scorns and abhors those who follow it, …

Adolescence In Recent Fiction, Sarah T. Sisson

No teacher or parent, who comes in contact with the period of life extending from the advent of puberty to the attainment of maturity and known technically as Adolescence, can fail to appreciate, aside from any biological or psychological training which he may have had, that these years are full of storm and uncertainty in an attempt to gain control through harmonious functioning of body, mind, and soul.

Reason And Christian Faith, Daniel Coyner Jan 1927

Reason And Christian Faith, Daniel Coyner

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The attempt to present a somewhat different point of new is the only excuse that may be offered for another treatment of the relation of reason to Christian faith. The peculiarity of the following discussion will be its assumption that Christianity is the true religion. It is in no sense a study of the philosophy of religion, which begins, for purposes of argument, with the notion that all religions are of equal merit. Nor is it similar to the prefatory remarks on the relation of reason to religious truth which are commonly found in the books on the philosophy of …

Skill And Accuracy Test In The Use Of Hand Woodworking Tools, Warren Prescott Dayton Jan 1927

Skill And Accuracy Test In The Use Of Hand Woodworking Tools, Warren Prescott Dayton

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

In view of the fact that the greatest argument in favor of any educational test is its need, one is compelled to keep this in mind while introducing a new test and give this factor first consideration. It is safe to say that any instrumental- ity that will aid the teacher in the understanding of his pupil and his present and potential ability is needed. Truly the various intelligence, aptitude and content tests, now in ever increasing use, have justified their existence upon this foundation of pedigogical need.

Divorce And Its Relation To Cook County Relief Cases, Mary Mcintyre Jan 1927

Divorce And Its Relation To Cook County Relief Cases, Mary Mcintyre

Master's Theses

The family—man, woman, child—is the human trinity of society and hence is often called the "social unit" or the "cell of the social organism". Since it has priority of nature with regard to larger groups, it has also the priority of right. The family is the first to serve the individual and when it fails, society fails, for history is full of examples of the fall of empires preceded by the decay of family life. Because of its influence in the forming of personal character and the training of citizenship, it is of first social importance.

The Solubility Of Solid Paraffin In The Lower Molecular Weight Hydrocarbons, Paul Weber Jan 1927

The Solubility Of Solid Paraffin In The Lower Molecular Weight Hydrocarbons, Paul Weber

Masters Theses

"In the process of oil refining, a certain fraction of distillate from the crude oil composes the so-called wax distillate fraction from which is obtained the various lubricating oils. But the presence of the waxes and solid paraffins in these oils is very undesirable as they possess no lubricating qualities. Consequently, they must be removed from this wax distillate before the oil can be marketed"--Introduction, page 1.

Development Of Selected Mathematical Instruments Representing Angular, Logarithmic And Arithmetic Computation, Lillian L. Troxell Jan 1927

Development Of Selected Mathematical Instruments Representing Angular, Logarithmic And Arithmetic Computation, Lillian L. Troxell

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The Sextant in its earliest known form consisted of divided circles and compasses with simply sights. An early Creek astronomer of the second century after Christ, Claudius Ptolemaeus, or more commonly called Ptolemy, wrote a book entitled Megale Syntaxis tes Astron- omias, also known by the Arabic title Almagest. The instrument described in this book was called the Astrolable and was used to measure the angular distance between stars. It was made of two concentric vertical circles, the largest and outer circle was about sixteen inches in diameter with graduated arc; the central ring was movable and carried the two …
