Reason And Christian Faith, Daniel Coyner Jan 1927

Reason And Christian Faith, Daniel Coyner

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The attempt to present a somewhat different point of new is the only excuse that may be offered for another treatment of the relation of reason to Christian faith. The peculiarity of the following discussion will be its assumption that Christianity is the true religion. It is in no sense a study of the philosophy of religion, which begins, for purposes of argument, with the notion that all religions are of equal merit. Nor is it similar to the prefatory remarks on the relation of reason to religious truth which are commonly found in the books on the philosophy of …

Skill And Accuracy Test In The Use Of Hand Woodworking Tools, Warren Prescott Dayton Jan 1927

Skill And Accuracy Test In The Use Of Hand Woodworking Tools, Warren Prescott Dayton

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

In view of the fact that the greatest argument in favor of any educational test is its need, one is compelled to keep this in mind while introducing a new test and give this factor first consideration. It is safe to say that any instrumental- ity that will aid the teacher in the understanding of his pupil and his present and potential ability is needed. Truly the various intelligence, aptitude and content tests, now in ever increasing use, have justified their existence upon this foundation of pedigogical need.

Divorce And Its Relation To Cook County Relief Cases, Mary Mcintyre Jan 1927

Divorce And Its Relation To Cook County Relief Cases, Mary Mcintyre

Master's Theses

The family—man, woman, child—is the human trinity of society and hence is often called the "social unit" or the "cell of the social organism". Since it has priority of nature with regard to larger groups, it has also the priority of right. The family is the first to serve the individual and when it fails, society fails, for history is full of examples of the fall of empires preceded by the decay of family life. Because of its influence in the forming of personal character and the training of citizenship, it is of first social importance.

The Solubility Of Solid Paraffin In The Lower Molecular Weight Hydrocarbons, Paul Weber Jan 1927

The Solubility Of Solid Paraffin In The Lower Molecular Weight Hydrocarbons, Paul Weber

Masters Theses

"In the process of oil refining, a certain fraction of distillate from the crude oil composes the so-called wax distillate fraction from which is obtained the various lubricating oils. But the presence of the waxes and solid paraffins in these oils is very undesirable as they possess no lubricating qualities. Consequently, they must be removed from this wax distillate before the oil can be marketed"--Introduction, page 1.

Development Of Selected Mathematical Instruments Representing Angular, Logarithmic And Arithmetic Computation, Lillian L. Troxell

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The Sextant in its earliest known form consisted of divided circles and compasses with simply sights. An early Creek astronomer of the second century after Christ, Claudius Ptolemaeus, or more commonly called Ptolemy, wrote a book entitled Megale Syntaxis tes Astron- omias, also known by the Arabic title Almagest. The instrument described in this book was called the Astrolable and was used to measure the angular distance between stars. It was made of two concentric vertical circles, the largest and outer circle was about sixteen inches in diameter with graduated arc; the central ring was movable and carried the two …

The Drama As A Factor In Americanization, Florence Scott Van Gilder Jan 1927

The Drama As A Factor In Americanization, Florence Scott Van Gilder

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The main objective before us is to determine how the drama, in its several forms, may be so utilized as to bring about and further Americanization. In attempting to make this theory clear to those who may be more or less unfamiliar with the idea, it will be necessary to consider the definition of Americanization, and to make some decision as to who may be Americanized. It will also be necessary to review, rather briefly, the origin and development of the drama, that it may be seen why drama has been elected as our medium.

There have been several difficulties …

The Function Of The Priest And Of The Prophet In The Propatation Of Religion, Charles Ernest Davis Jan 1927

The Function Of The Priest And Of The Prophet In The Propatation Of Religion, Charles Ernest Davis

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

As one peers across the vistas of the past two types of holy men stand out with striking prominence and significance. The advance of religious thought and life has largely been due to the activities and contributions of these two, the priest and the prophet.

It has been the purpose of this research to seek to discover the particular functions of each of these, to show their correlation in producing religious advance, and to make certain suggestions as to how the values each has to contribute to the program of the modern Christian church may be more adequately realized.

Intervention Of The United States In Nicaragua Since 1909, Louise Floyd Jan 1927

Intervention Of The United States In Nicaragua Since 1909, Louise Floyd

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The twentieth century is revealing a steady increase in the influence of the United States in the Caribbean region, both in politics and economic development. The arm of America has been gradually forcing out the European nations. Counting colonies and protectorates, the United States has under its supervision a greater Caribbean population than the population of the thirteen colonies at the time of the Declaration of Independence. In trade the United States is the best customer of Central America and the West Indies. The region is one of the chief sources of our raw-materials imports.

The majority of the citizens …

American Oil Interests In Mosul, John S. Landrum Jan 1927

American Oil Interests In Mosul, John S. Landrum

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

During the nineteenth century the industry and capi- txl of the United States was entirely absorbed in the develop- ment of our home industries and resources. In fact, as may have been expected, we did not have nearly enough capital for this work and had to borrow from Europe.

But toward the end of the century it became apparent to thinking men that the time was not far distant when we should have a surplus of capital here, and that to employ it we would have to seek foreign fields for investment. The Spanish American War led us into the …

The Catalytic Action Of Neutral Salts : The Effect Of Normal Alkali Sulphates On Alkali Acid Sulphates In The Ketonic Splitting Of Ethyl Acetoacetate, Elbridge Alvah Goodhue

Masters Theses

"The catalytic effect of neutral salts has been investigated for numerous reactions and various theories propounded to account for their action. In this work the action of normal potassium and sodium sulphates on solutions of the corresponding acid salt has been investigated for two concentrations of the latter at three different temperatures. An attempt has been made to account for the observed actions"--Introduction, page 1.

A Study Of The Iodine Content Of Representative Missouri Waters, Edmond Carl Hunze Jan 1927

A Study Of The Iodine Content Of Representative Missouri Waters, Edmond Carl Hunze

Masters Theses

"Investigations have shown that the iodine content of natural waters bears a direct relationship to the goiter incidence of a given region. A number of the states have analysed [sic] their water for this constituent in the development of this hypothesis. A search of the literature revealed the fact that with the exception of two instances the iodine content of Missouri water had not been determined. Since in certain regions of Missouri there is quite a prevalence of goiter, it was deemed important to determine the iodine content of Missouri waters. It was believed that such information would be a …

The System: Calcium Oxalate - Sulphuric Acid, Joseph Maple Wilson

Masters Theses

"The manufacture of oxalic acid includes as one of the steps in the process, the conversion of calcium oxalate to the desired oxalic acid by treatment with sulphuric acid, and the subsequent crystalization [sic] of the oxalic acid from the solution of it thus made. This investigation has dealt with this conversion step, with regard to the various factors affecting it. The effect of time, acid concentration, temperature, volume of solution, solubility of reaction products, and possible compound formation have all been considered, and from the information thus gained the conclusion has been drawn"--Introduction, page 1.

For as time goes on, we must all keep apace so as not to lag behind in method, thought, or action. Many of the subjects in our school curriculum have undergone vital changes in purpose, value, and method of presentation. Not least among these is reading.

Democracy may be defined as the collective action of the whole body of citizens to advance the general welfare. In order to secure this cooperative activity, it is necessary to motivate the individuals so that they will work in cooperation for the common good. This mass organization, however, should not lose sight of the individual who should be given the opportunity to work out his own ends in the community.

The tale of terror has thrilled men of all ages. Man desires, not only to be amused, but also to be roused to pity and terror. Francis Thompson And His Affinities With The Metaphysical Poets., Catherine Lucile Sanford Jun 1926

Francis Thompson And His Affinities With The Metaphysical Poets., Catherine Lucile Sanford

Bachelors’ Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to show that Francis Thompson, the nineteenth century poet, has marked affinities with the Metaphysical poets, of the seventeenth century. The term Metaphysical has been applied by Dr. Samuel Johnson to the poetry of writers such as Donne, Herbert, Crashaw, Vaughan and Cowley. Possibly, the reason for the name may be attributed to the fact that they were thought to have been so much above the earth, for indeed they searched heaven and earth for their analogies and imagery.

The Possibility Of Miracles, Sophia Zimmerman Jun 1926

The Possibility Of Miracles, Sophia Zimmerman

Bachelors’ Theses

In contrasting ancient and modern times, there is, perhaps, no point of difference so outstanding as the general attitude of each age toward the miraculous. Throughout the early ages pagans, Jews and Christians were ever ready to recognize the interference of unseen powers in the course of nature. The idea of the miraculous awoke no aversion in them. Not even the most bitter and most clever enemies of Christianity, such as Celsus and Julian the Apostate, in their efforts to combat Christianity ever attempted the argument that the miracles upon which it rests are impossible, although this would have been …

The Effect Of Federal Income Tax Legislation On Accounting Theory And Practice, Paul Raidy Jun 1926

The Effect Of Federal Income Tax Legislation On Accounting Theory And Practice, Paul Raidy

Bachelors’ Theses

"The income tax is a tax levied or imposed on income, gain, or profits. It is fundamentally different from other established forms of taxation, such as excise and property taxes, in that the underlying theory of the tax is based on the assumption that the taxpayer shall contribute to the cost of government tn proportion to the gain or profit he has realized either through a return or yield on wealth or because of productive effort."
