The Objectives Of Primary Reading, Leona L. Zarling Apr 1929

The Objectives Of Primary Reading, Leona L. Zarling

Bachelors’ Theses

Recent investigations in reading have shown us the need for adaptation of methods to the needs of modern social life, and the broadening of the school curriculum. The National committee on Reading has adopted three major objectives of reading.

The first of these is to give rich and varied experience in reading. Since reading aims to prepare a child to live a fuller and more intelligent life, early reading should aid in establishing a good fund of information, and thereby should broaden his interests and help him to understand and interpret future situations. Care in selection of materials will help …

The Teleological Argument For The Existence Of God, Louis A. Wilson Apr 1929

The Teleological Argument For The Existence Of God, Louis A. Wilson

Bachelors’ Theses

After all, the mystic's position is not wholly unintelligible. For while his imagination serves him as an immediate perceptive faculty with which he sees God in his every glance at the universe, his view is not without a philosophical basis. It is from the data furnished us by the universe of our experience that Natural Theology is able to arrive at the knowledge of the existence of God. In doing so it may employ either of three ·types of arguments. If it begins with a consideration of the primary attributes proper to all finite beings as such, it is metaphysical; …

An Historical Review Of Prohibition And An Observation Of Its Conflict With Individual Rights, Harold J. Cook Apr 1929

An Historical Review Of Prohibition And An Observation Of Its Conflict With Individual Rights, Harold J. Cook

Bachelors’ Theses

That in any institution of government, but most especially so in one of pro-fessed democratic proclivities, the drawing, legitimatizing, and interpolation upon the subjects of that government, of any legislative measure, which, under the false banner of indispensability, takes away a thing of import in the enjoyment of personal liberty, becomes a mere mockery if there is present, no sentiment or innate under standing of the necessity of such a prohibition back of that law. To show the veracity of this statement will be the purpose of this paper. The method followed will involve chiefly an investigation of the historical …

Prevocational Guidance, Burton L. Ambrose Apr 1929

Prevocational Guidance, Burton L. Ambrose

Bachelors’ Theses

A critical appreciation of the historical aspects of any contemporary educational movement is important. All modern social programs have their roots in the past. Our modern world is not static. No civilization rests on permanent changeless foundations. All reveal a growing changing organism. Development is the keynote, of what we often presume to call, progress. Movements, which were important a generation ago, have ceased to register a present value. Society is in a constant state of flux, and at no two periods have conditions been the same.

Care And Education Of The Defective School Child, Mathew Barkley Apr 1929

Care And Education Of The Defective School Child, Mathew Barkley

Bachelors’ Theses

In the past, we have either paid too much attention to the defective child, to the detriment of the normal children in the schools, or in a majority of the cases we have neglected him entirely. We must figure out a system of education which will take care of him adequately without working a hardship on the children who are able to do the regular school work. We must measure hie capabilities and gauge his work according to hie ability.

The Literature Of The Age Of Queen Anne And How It Reflects The Problems And Politics Of The Time, Francis J. Costigan

Bachelors’ Theses

The object of this thesis is to go back into Early Eighteenth Century England and see the literature, the politics and the life of the time, and then to compare the history of the time with the literature and see how the latter reflects the former.

In selecting the writers, I have chosen the two greatest of the first half of the Eighteenth Century, Swift and Defoe.

I have divided the thesis into two parts. Part One gives a resume of the politics of England during this period. Part Two is devoted to the writers themselves and I have used …

The Place Of Syndication In The Development Of The Short Story, James T. Friar

Bachelors’ Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to weigh, examine and compare the two periods in American Literature from 1870 to 1890 and from then to 1910; with reference to the short story. For it was in 1869 that Bret Harte wrote "The Luck of Roaring Camp" and this story is generally accepted as the first distinct American short story. I propose to do this by examination of the prominent men, their wor1 s. In behalf of the earlier school there is: Bret Harte, Page, Freeman, Cradock, Murfree, Harris, Stockton and Aldrich. On the side of the later writers there is: …

Source Of Moral Obligation, B. Eugene Hibner Apr 1929

Source Of Moral Obligation, B. Eugene Hibner

Bachelors’ Theses

The question of the source of moral obligation is one over which great conflicts arise, and concerning which the various schools vary widely. There actually are two possible theories:- the Scholastic theory, which claims that the source of moral obligation is the necessary will of God; and the Rationalistic school, which makes reason, whether individual or of the universal substance, the source of obligation. Kantian Ethics, the foremost of the rationalistic ethics, advocates "practical reason as the source of obligation." However, there are many sub-theories concerning this question of obligation, but we find that they are influenced to a great …

Diganostic And Remedial Reading In The Primary Grades, Myrtle C. Merritt

Bachelors’ Theses

"READING is both the most important and the most trouble-sane subject in the elementary school curriculum," (1) The importance of this subject is recognized by educators everywhere. Recent years have brought forth a particularly large number of investigations in this subject. Teaching Reading In The First Grade, Florence E. Moran Feb 1929

Teaching Reading In The First Grade, Florence E. Moran

Bachelors’ Theses

Reading is not only the most important, but also the most widely discussed and complex subject in the school curriculum. It is the most important, for it is intimately related to all the other school subjects and is essential to every branch of knowledge. Without a knowledge of reading the pupil cannot engage effectively in any desirable life activity. Its primary importance in the curriculum may be gauged by the relatively large amount of time devoted to the subject, the countless number of ingenious teaching devices, the many scientific investigations, as well as the thorough and recent research work done …

Book Aids For The Teacher Of Geography In The Elementary School, Stella M. Frye Feb 1929

Book Aids For The Teacher Of Geography In The Elementary School, Stella M. Frye

Bachelors’ Theses

In America, the development of the study of geography has been very slow, and until recent years, this country could boast of very few geographers, and had made little progress in the field of geographic research. Germany and France have long been leaders in this field, and some of the moot reliable authorities on the subject are the French and German geographers. Almost every country in Europe "now has its professional geographers and geography has long been recognized as a subject for independent study and research."

The Manufacture Of Airtight Leather Gaskets, W. Kedzie Teller Jan 1929

The Manufacture Of Airtight Leather Gaskets, W. Kedzie Teller

Professional Degree Theses

"Wherever gaskets are used in conjunction with any type of mechanism operated by compressed air, of course, it is essential that the gaskets be air tight. Whereas it is possible to use rubberized fabric for this purpose with a degree of satisfaction, treated leather has certain advantages which make its use preferable. Leather is readily available and can be cut and molded into various shapes with less difficulty than is encountered in fabricating similar designs from reinforced rubber. Then, too, leather withstands wear much better than rubberized fabric. The problem then arises to treat leather to make it airtight, for …

Electrolytic Board For The Determination Of Lead, And Some Comments On The Procedure For Lead In Low-Grade Tailings Of The Southeast Missouri Lead District, O. W. Holmes Jan 1929

Electrolytic Board For The Determination Of Lead, And Some Comments On The Procedure For Lead In Low-Grade Tailings Of The Southeast Missouri Lead District, O. W. Holmes

Professional Degree Theses

"Recent improvements in the practice of milling lead ores of the Southeast Missouri Lead Mining District has resulted in the production of low-grade mill tailings. The tenor of the lead in the tailings is often between 0.05 and 0.25 per cent. In view of the fact that large tonnages are handled daily and that further improvements are under way, it is imperative that the lead content of these tailings be accurately determined.

For this purpose an electrolytic board, which speeds up the electrolytic determination of lead in low-grade mill tailings, has been devised at the Mississippi Valley Experiment Station of …

Formal Retraction Or Literary Repentance In The Elizabethan Age., Irene B. Rhoads Jan 1929

Formal Retraction Or Literary Repentance In The Elizabethan Age., Irene B. Rhoads

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Before entering upon a discussion of those writers of the Elizabethan Age whose works present specific instances of Personal Retractation, let us turn our attention to the problem in general and try to find out why writers of this age and of earlier times felt it necessary to repent of their literary efforts. Some critics may say that retractation was merely a literary convention; and why bother about its beginnings, sources, et cetera? Others may have the opinion that it was a personal trait, only a means of satisfying some peculiar whim or fancy of the author. Some may go …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Light in its various phases exerts a marked influence on the functional as well as the physical structure of all living matter. The phenomena of light involves two theories: (1) the wave or electro-magnetic theory conceiving light as consisting of electric emanations or waves of various frequencies and intensities given off from many substances. (The principle source of light as thus conceived is the sun with its estimated temperature of 10,000 F.); (2) the quantum theory which conceives light as a factor involved in ionization in chemical reactions (negative electrons are ejected from a surface of metallic iron when a …

The Mississippi Question And The Problem Of Statehood In Kentucky., Harold J. Stipe Jan 1929

The Mississippi Question And The Problem Of Statehood In Kentucky., Harold J. Stipe

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The history of new state movements in America is always an absorbing study; the character of the settlers and the compelling factors that motivate them are revealed with startling clarity as the reader turns the pages back into the annals of the period. The history of America has been, in a large degree, says Frederick J. Turner, "the history of the colonization of the Great West. The existence of an area of free land, its continuous recession, and the advance of American settlement westward, explain American development." In no state was the influence of the frontier advance upon political development …
