Public Opinion, John Joseph Shinners May 1929

Public Opinion, John Joseph Shinners

Bachelors’ Theses

"The people at large," said Aristotle, "how contemptible so ever they may appear when taken individually, are yet, when collectively considered, not, perhaps, unworthy of sovereignty." For, "considered collectively," he argued, "the people form a complex animal with many feet, with many virtues; each member contributing something, more or less valuable, to the perfection of the whole body. The moral and intellectual excellence of the multitude thus differs from those of a wise and virtuous man, as the beaty of a fine picture from beauty of individuals."

The Romantic Movement Of The Nineteenth Century In Its Relation To The French Spirit, Clarence R. Wilkinson May 1929

The Romantic Movement Of The Nineteenth Century In Its Relation To The French Spirit, Clarence R. Wilkinson

Bachelors’ Theses

Recently some prominent German stated that our literature of to-day is cheapened, because of the vast quantities of it now printed. Ever since the invention of the printing-press made possible a wider and less expensive circulation of reading material, there has been an ever-increasing supply of printed matter. Owing to the continually-growing circle of readers, whose demands vary, there have been found writers who would cater to the lower tastes which are lurking in the nature of every man, but which the well-balanced individual crushes with the heel of his will-power. Coupled with the productions of other authors, those of …

The Determination Of The Relationship Between The Specific Gravity Of A Wood Pulp Solution And The Percentage Of Dry Pulp It Contains, A. J. Schwalbach

Bachelors’ Theses

In this thesis, an attempt has been made to solve one of the many problems of, the pulp and paper company. The work was carried out in as suitable a manner as possible under laboratpry conditions. These conditions are somewhat different than those present in a paper mill or a pulp mill. The type of beater, the blades of the beater and the rate of speed of the beater blades differ in both cases. This will affect the results.

News Services Of The Community Newspaper, Rupert J. Mulchaey May 1929

News Services Of The Community Newspaper, Rupert J. Mulchaey

Bachelors’ Theses

In the development of contemporary American life with its Main Streets and Babbitts has come the in vitable passing of the country printer-edit-or who served in every capacity necessitated by his business. Today, such significant changes have occurred in the field of community journalism that instead of the traditional country printer-editor we perceive a new enlightened era in which the community newspaper rises out of lethargy to new importance beside the best of city dailies. Just as the development of American rural life has been something which we might attribute to education it is also plausible for us to credit …

A Critical Study Of The Spirit And Ideas Of Anglo-Saxon Poetry, Edna Louise Goeden May 1929

A Critical Study Of The Spirit And Ideas Of Anglo-Saxon Poetry, Edna Louise Goeden

Bachelors’ Theses

A study of Anglo-Saxon poetry is necessarily limited. The centuries which have elapsed since these poems were first set down, the ravages of war, of fire, and especially of ignorant men have served to destroy most of this early English literature. Moreover, much of that which has come down to us is fragmentary and incomplete.

Religious Contents In School Readers, Mary Leocadis May 1929

Religious Contents In School Readers, Mary Leocadis

Bachelors’ Theses

A task worthy of the wisest minds and of the biggest efforts is to place before the young a series of reading books that will contain noble and elevating thoughts and inspiring ideals, the best that has been enshrined in the literature of ages. Whatever may be gleamed from the glorious past that will contribute to the better and holier living of the present is, by right, the heritage of the youth of today. A reading book, therefore, should be a collection of the sayings and writings of the best and noblest men. "Nothing," says Professor Brooks, "in the entire …

Spiritism, Ralph B. Lenz May 1929

Spiritism, Ralph B. Lenz

Bachelors’ Theses

In the study of modern Spiritism, one is face to face with a huge collection of facts, phenomena, theories, and frauds. To sift the worthwhile grains of truth from this heap is really a difficult task. Countless books and pamphlets there are in existence today that give us all manner of information relative to Spiritism. They contain descriptions and explanations of the various phenomena produced at sceances; they put forth the religious doctrines of the Spiritists; they expose fraudulent practices at tires; and usually they advance a few theories on the subject.

The Importance Of The Community Newspaper Has Not Decreased But The Function Has Been Changed By Improved Transportation And Communication Facilities, Thomas P. Mannion May 1929

The Importance Of The Community Newspaper Has Not Decreased But The Function Has Been Changed By Improved Transportation And Communication Facilities, Thomas P. Mannion

Bachelors’ Theses

Greater than a citizen's self assertiveness or his frequent lapses into petty strife is his fundamental tendency to work and live in union with his fellow men. Neighborliness is one of the more personal expressions of the universal tendency to cohesion among human beings and every means available that tends to concentrate and centralize this social demand is necessarily brought into play. From the beginning of time people have formed themselves into clans, tribes and communities, comprised of those interested in similar ideas and things, all working for the development and progress of themselves and their particular group. For centuries, …

The Magazine In America Before 1850, Domingo J. Thill May 1929

The Magazine In America Before 1850, Domingo J. Thill

Bachelors’ Theses

The magazine in America has never been made a subject of exhaustive and definite research. Though the study is interesting and informative few have cared to resign themselves to it because of the evidently meager returns and the scarcity of accurate material. An occasional remark concerning the DIAL or the NORTH AMERICAN REVIEW is all that is heard about the magazines previous to 1850. The trials and tortures of the magazines and their sponsors have been forgotten more readily than is deserved. This essay-thesis attempts to bring back to the attention of the reader the problems and misfortunes that confronted …

Effective Editorials, Leonard Scheller May 1929

Effective Editorials, Leonard Scheller

Bachelors’ Theses

During the last fifty years journalism has seen a steady decline of the influence of the editorial. The golden age of the editorial existed during the Civil War period, at the time when journalism was still personal instead of institutional as it is today. Among the writers of that period were Horace Greeley, Charles A. Dana, Henrey J. Raymond, Joseph Medill and Henry Watterson. These writers were specially effective because they enjoyed a nation-wide reading public due to the fact that the west and the middle west were still undeveloped regions for leadership in thought they turned to the writers …

The Development Of English Grammar From 1750 To 1929, Helen Kathryn Walsh May 1929

The Development Of English Grammar From 1750 To 1929, Helen Kathryn Walsh

Bachelors’ Theses

For some time I have been interested in the subject of Grammar. A generation ago, it was considered one of the most important subjects in the elementary schools. But now, grammar is a thing one teaches only incidentally. What has brought this change? What is the situation to-day? What may we hope for in the future? These are some of the questions which need to be answered. The pendulum has indeed swung far out into empty space. It surely must return. Will we be able to stop it midway in its course?

Optimism Versus Pessimism, James F. Chapman May 1929

Optimism Versus Pessimism, James F. Chapman

Bachelors’ Theses

All that promotes success, welfare, or happiness is included in the ideal good. If human beings value their lives and the lives of others; take pride in development and progress-in short, if they consider life worth living, as good, as the best thing for them; they nay be called optimists.

Many Authors And Writers Have Been Developed In Some Phase Of Journalistic Work, Margaret Baleen May 1929

Many Authors And Writers Have Been Developed In Some Phase Of Journalistic Work, Margaret Baleen

Bachelors’ Theses

A university professor in characterizing journalists said,"I have always considered the journalists the alert of the alert. Perhaps there may be some arguments against this statement by those engaged in other professions but the fa.ct remains that a journalist to be successful must be one vitally interested in every phase of life and ¢ust have a true sense of news values in discovering the interesting facts in society as he sees it. He must know what will hold the interest of his readers and must be ready at any time to obtain that bit of news which rill interest his …

Nineteen country weekly newspapers, representative of the various sections cf Wisconsin, have been selected by the writer as a basis for this thesis. A Comparison Of Certain English And French Poets Of The Romantic Era, Robert Howard O'Keef

Bachelors’ Theses

It is the purpose of this paper to compare the poetry of the romantic movement in England and in France. First it will present the characteristics of the leading poets in each of these countries. Then these traits will be compared to determine in what respects they were similar and what respects they differed. Periodic Functions, W. Kenneth Koehler May 1929

Periodic Functions, W. Kenneth Koehler

Bachelors’ Theses

The first known publications on the periodic functions were those of Fantet de Lagnv, a French mathematician born at Lyons in the year 1660. Although previous to this, mathematicians, notably Galilio in his analysis of the cycloid, had studied functions and curves whose properties necessarily involved periodic functions, no specific mention of this property was made.

The Clover Leaf Weevil, Hypera punctata (Fabr.),* is a foreign pest introduced from Europe into New York, which first became noticeable in 1881. The insect has rapidly spread westward reaching Utah at least by 1912. Since this time several out-breaks have occured. In 1927 the injury to alfalfa, Medicago sativa, was severe in limited areas in Hooper, Weber County, and in 1927 and 1928 the infestation was very pronounced in certain parts of Salt Lake City.

Genesis, Development And Progress Of The United Church Of Canada, Dougald K. Mccoll May 1929

Genesis, Development And Progress Of The United Church Of Canada, Dougald K. Mccoll

Graduate Thesis Collection

There is an almost universal demand in Christendom for a union of churches, which will, in some way, give stability and visibility to the unity of all Christians. Throughout the world there are new movements toward unity. In England, Scotland, United States and Canada, in fact the majority of countries where the reform faith is in the strongest, there is a tendency to accentuate the things that unite.

A Study Of The Financial Considerations, Offered Teachers Of Utah, As Inducement For Professional Growth With Comparisons Drawn From Some Other States, Alvin Hess May 1929

A Study Of The Financial Considerations, Offered Teachers Of Utah, As Inducement For Professional Growth With Comparisons Drawn From Some Other States, Alvin Hess

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Much has been written on the subject of supervision and the improvement of teaching. It is the general opinion of authors on this subject that it is a much better procedure to retain the services of competent teachers over long tenure than to follow any of the uneconomical plans of adapting large numbers of new teachers to the task of establishing the necessary teacher-pupil contacts for successful learning. But, of course, these authors do not suggest long tenure without active improvement of teachers while in service. Tenure laws are of such importance in some states as to take the form …

Municipal Lighting Of Logan City, Maya M. Fonnesbeck May 1929

Municipal Lighting Of Logan City, Maya M. Fonnesbeck

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Municipal lighting in Logan City is a contemporary development of municipal lighting in other American cities, because it has involved public opinion and lawsuits and competition between a private corporation and a municipality owning and operating an electric light plant. It is perhaps one of the most eventful and serious conflicts between owners of a public utility which has come before public and legal observation in the State of Utah. The case of Logan City vs. Utah Power & Light Company was brought before the Utah State Utilities Commission and the Utah State Supreme Court and the Court decided that …

The Apostolic Succession Of The Episcopal Church, W Poehler Apr 1929

The Apostolic Succession Of The Episcopal Church, W Poehler

Bachelor of Divinity

"By this term (Apostolic Succession) is understood the claim made by most episcopally ordained clergymen and bishops (Anglican, Syrian, and Catholic churches) that they constitute links in an uninterrupted chain of similarly ordained persons, the first of whom were ordained by the apostles themselves. With this opinion is combined the view that only clergymen who are in the line of this spiritual succession are entitled to a pastoral office in the Christian Church, and that all others usurp the functions of the ministry….. the authoritatively commissioned minister is the proper divine instrumentality through which Christ, the exalted invisible Head of …
