"Every year the various engineering and industrial magazines print curves showing the rise and fall of metal stocks throughout the year. to the ordinary reader, these curves are seldom intelligible; he sees the ups and downs; he knows that the prices have risen and fallen; but he rarely knows what causes these changes -- and the curves themselves never tell. "During the spring of 1919 we undertook to prepare tri-methyl-amine for the Research Department of the Eastman Kodak Company in the Industrial Chemistry Laboratory of the Missouri School of Minds. According to V. Merz and K. Gasiorowski the three methyl amines were qualitatively proven to be present in the reaction products obtained by heating methyl alcohol, ammonia and zinc chloride to 220°C. in a bomb for fourteen hours. As these raw materials are inexpensive we attempted to prepare the tri-methyl-amine by this reaction employing for the purpose a small industrial autoclave. These substances are easily purified and give sharp mepting points which make them of value for identification phases of research work. Also they are of value commercially as in the production of saccharin and other similar compounds. It is known that carbohydrates on oxidation break into fragments which later are oxidised, or reduced, according as the conditions of the bodily functioning may favor, and it is in this process or reaction of the carbohydrate molecule that the formation of pyruvic acid probably takes place. From this point the pyruvic acid molecule on being fully oxidised would give the products carbon dioxide and water, and partial oxidation would give carbon dioxide and other products.

This problem originated in an attempt to make methyl glyoxal in quantity. Several methods of making methyl glyoxal are mentioned in the literature but in none of them is acetone used as a starting point. Since this seemed a new field it was decided to chlorinate acetone hoping to obtain some product which might be easily converted into methyl glyoxal. Technical acetone was purified and dry chlorine was passed through this warm acetone in the presence of sunlight. During the process three distinct steps were noticed in the reaction. "The unprecedented demand for sulphuric acid of the higher strengths (98% and higher) in the manufacture of explosives, has stimulated the zinc smelters to increased efforts in the recovery of their Roaster gases in the form of Sulphuric Acid. The Lead-chamber process is unsuitable, however, in making "strong" acid and the smelters naturally turned to the contact mass or catalytic processes. The Crow Creek Indian Reservation is located in South Dakota, bordering the east side of the Missouri River, about forty miles below Pierre, the Capital. He is an interesting character for he was one of the strong pioneers on the western frontier in the days of 1834 when St. Louis was a small town. "In the concentration of an ore by means of concentrating tables, there is a critical point in sizing beyond which the valuable minerals can not be recovered. Theoretically, the lighter gangue is washed over the side of' the table and the heavier mineral, regardless of size, is recoverable at the end, these concentrates being graded from coarse to fine sizes up the slope of the table.
