The hard seed coat found on some seeds has long been an object of interest to experimentors in seed germination and a great deal of work has been done on various phases of the problem. Some have attacked it with the idea of hastening germination, while others have been interested in determining the nature of the seed coat and isolating the factors which make it impermeable under ordinary favorable germination conditions.

During the last half century, there have been many surveys of city school systems. These surveys have been general; they have compared an entire school system with another of similar size. This thesis is also a compartive study of a school system but it compares the costs and enrollment in the four high schools of a single city. An attempt was made in this laboratory to measure the pressure or capillary potential of soils by a vapor pressure method. The experiment was carried out by placing small cans of soil in dessicators with solutions of known vapor pressure in the bottom. These dessicators were immersed in a constant temperature water bath. It was hoped that by this method the vapor pressure of the soils could be determined and the pressure potentials calculated as will be explained in a later part of this paper. The phenomena of the separation of substances by 'Various membranes was first -discovered by Thomas Graham, who found that certain materials passed through membranes much more readily than others. This consequently afforded him a norm by which he distinguished a variety of substances. Those which passed through the membrane most readily he called crystalloids, because of their crystalline nature. Those which were retained colloids, because of their gelatinous or glue like consistency.
