A History Of Education In Mexico Since 1857, Alma S. Andrews

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to give an outline of the marked progress of education in Mexico since 1857, the date of the final separation of church and state.

Having taught tor several years in Americanization schools, the writer has experienced close contact with all classes of Mexicans. Consequently, this study has been entered into for the purpose of bringing about a better understanding of the peculiar needs of the people and of the problems confronting the Mexican nation as a whole.

It is the sincere hope of the writer that this work will absorb the interest or those …

A Report Of A Five Year Experiment In The Formulation And Operation Of A Character Education Program In A Small Rural Secondary School, Mable William Barron Jan 1933

A Report Of A Five Year Experiment In The Formulation And Operation Of A Character Education Program In A Small Rural Secondary School, Mable William Barron

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This report on the formulation and operation of a plan for character education in a rural secondary school is submitted in the hope that it may be one of many similar studies aimed to stimulate interest in and foster character building. It is not contended that this is a perfect scheme. Its defects were clearly revealed in its five years of operation. Its influence and results are more clearly apparent to those who view it from the distance. One of the new teachers stated in February, "I don't know what's responsible but the boys and girls in this school are …

The Religious Implications Of Hobhouse's Philosophy, H. Austin Smith Jan 1933

The Religious Implications Of Hobhouse's Philosophy, H. Austin Smith

Graduate Thesis Collection

The philosophy of L.T. Hobhouse interested me primarily because it is an attempt at a synthesis of the results of empirical science and of rational thought. The religious aspect of his work, both in his definite criticisms and contributions in the specific field of religion and in the more general implications of his system as a whole, seemed to me worth compiling and examining.

The Legal Concept Of The Teacher's Contract, Wanda I. Johnson Jan 1933

The Legal Concept Of The Teacher's Contract, Wanda I. Johnson

Graduate Thesis Collection

The major purpose of this study is to determine the nature and characteristics of the contractual relationships between school boards of education and public school teachers. Controversies between the board and the teacher have frequently arisen and have often been carried to the courts. Courts have been called upon to settle issues which deal with the status of existing between the board and the teacher, and thereby do exert an influence upon the priviledges or denials, allowed or disallowed when contracting parties make such agreements. This study deals with the action of the courts, and the decisions of the judges …

The Development Of The School Teacher Character In The Works Of Leon Frapie, Bernice G. Giltner Jan 1933

The Development Of The School Teacher Character In The Works Of Leon Frapie, Bernice G. Giltner

Graduate Thesis Collection

One of the distinguishing characteristics of M. Leon Frapie's works is his choice of characters.  They are not chosen from the fashionable, aristocratic or intellectual class, but from among the humblest of the wage-earning class.  M Frapie depicts the drabness, ignorance and poverty which oppress these people, and perceives with his keen sensibilities the commonplace tragedy of their lives and of the lives of their children.  His own emotion becomes the medium by which a bond of sympathy toward them is transferred to the reader.

The History And Method Of The Immanuel Movement And Of Associated Groups, George W. Kehl Jan 1933

The History And Method Of The Immanuel Movement And Of Associated Groups, George W. Kehl

Graduate Thesis Collection

My interest in the subject of this thesis dates back ten years to the time when as a College and Theological Seminary Graduate I began to make my first visits to the sick in the congregation of which I had become pastor. Questions began to present themselves because the average sick calling seemed so perfunctory. Was I calling just to bring greetings from the church and to show my own interest? If I had prayer with the person who was sick, what answer should I expect to my prayer? Would or should there be immediate improvement and if not, why …

Chretien De Troyes: A Feminist Of Twelfth Century France, Ruth H. Shull Jan 1933

Chretien De Troyes: A Feminist Of Twelfth Century France, Ruth H. Shull

Graduate Thesis Collection

In twelfth century France, in Troyes, capital of Champagne, was born Chretien, later designated as Chretien de Troyes.  Little is known of his life, but it is supposed that his origins were humble.  Possibly he went to school at Reims, there to receive a clerical education, the best that his times afforded.

Contributions Of The Non-Literary Archaeological Materials To The Political And Social History Of The Hebrews, Ross Guiley

Graduate Thesis Collection

The term "Archaelogy," as is so common with the English language, is a two-fold or composite word.  It is a joining of two Greek terms.  The former signifies that which is "ancient," "primeval" or "olden," while the latter is more often used with the Greek meaning of "word," "study" or "discourse."

The Treatment Of The Tristan Legend In English Literature Up To The Twentieth Century, Myrtle M. Johnson Jan 1933

The Treatment Of The Tristan Legend In English Literature Up To The Twentieth Century, Myrtle M. Johnson

Graduate Thesis Collection

The purpose of the following study has been to consider the consecutive interpretations of the Tristan legend in English literature down to the present century. In order to appreciate their comparative fidelity to the spirit of the lost primitive poem, it was first necessary to examine the metrical romance of Thomas, "who may be said," writes William Henry Schofield, "to represent the highest achievement of any English poet in the twelfth century," along with other derivatives used in the scholarly and poetic reconstruction, made by Joseph Bedier, of that hypothetical original creation.

The Range Cattle Industry In New Mexico, Roy Willoughby Jan 1933

The Range Cattle Industry In New Mexico, Roy Willoughby

History ETDs

The range cattle industry in the west was the outgrowth of a combination of circumstances that first brought it into existence and then put an end to it forever. Contrasting with the magnitude and permanent effects of the industry was its short duration, a period of little more than two decades.

A Short History Of The Labors And Accomplishments Of The Protestant Missionaries In Hawaii, Margaret Adsit Jan 1933

A Short History Of The Labors And Accomplishments Of The Protestant Missionaries In Hawaii, Margaret Adsit

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

One of the first important efforts at foreign missionary work by American churches was the conversion of the Hawaiian Islands, or Sandwich islands as they were commonly called in the early days of their discovery, the first missionaries to the islands had heard reports from traders and whalers and accounts from native youths as to conditions in the islands, and from these facts they had imagined what would await them upon their arrival. When they arrived at the islands, they found great changes had taken place, such great changes that to the missionaries they could only be explained as "miraculous" …

Hermann Und Dorothea And Luise : A Comparative Analysis, Bettie Louise Kroeck Jan 1933

Hermann Und Dorothea And Luise : A Comparative Analysis, Bettie Louise Kroeck

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Critics have not yet come to an agreement as to how much Goethe took from Voss's Luise for his Hermann und Dorothea: and how much credit we are justified in giving to Goethe's originality for his production. When Hermann und Dorothea first appeared, it was scorned by a great many readers as being a rather poor imitation of Luise. Now it is undoubtedly regarded as the better productions of the two. However many critics still consider it to be an imitation of Voss, although perhaps an improvement. Certainly, Goethe was inspired to the use of the hexameter, in the …

A Dictionary Of Mathematical Terms For High School Students, Matilda O. Iverson Jan 1933

A Dictionary Of Mathematical Terms For High School Students, Matilda O. Iverson

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

In compiling and writing this dictionary the needs of the high school student and teacher interested in mathematics have been kept constantly in mind. The mathematics of the high school is perhaps the simplest of its kind and yet very few textbooks carefully define all technical terms as they are introduced. The thoughtful student may turn to an abridged or unabridged dictionary but will find in most cases that the definitions of the terms are vague, often misleading, and in some cases not given.

The words in the vocabulary have been arranged in alphabetical order so that the reference to …

The Influence Of British Literature Upon Pre-Raphaelite Painting, Veola Leona Bohnert Jan 1933

The Influence Of British Literature Upon Pre-Raphaelite Painting, Veola Leona Bohnert

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

It has been the object of the writer, in preparing this thesis, to emphasize the influence of British literature upon the Pre-Rapheelite Brotherhood of painters who lived and worked during the reign of Queen Victoria. It is the hope of the writer to show, in treating these artists who revived the truthfulness of nature as applied to painting, that those who were realists were also idealists, and that those who were romanticists were yet realists in the broader sense of the term, for realism may interpret the larger elements of imagination.

With due recognition of her limited ability, the author …

The Problem Of The Permanent Validity Of The Ethical Teachings Of Jesus Of Nazareth, Dwayne Orton Jan 1933

The Problem Of The Permanent Validity Of The Ethical Teachings Of Jesus Of Nazareth, Dwayne Orton

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The stream of Christianity has never run its course through a generation of believers in which has not been found someone who urged the application of Jesus teachings to the social perplexities of the day. The persistence of this attitude has not, however, been a guarantee of consistency either in the interpretation of the gospel they sought to apply or in the method of application. The approaches to the understanding of the ethic of Jesus have been as many and varied as the problems, the thought, and the radical characteristics of the people who have quenched their thirst with the …

A Study Of The Acoustics Of Some Stockton Auditoriums And Rooms, Glen Halik Jan 1933

A Study Of The Acoustics Of Some Stockton Auditoriums And Rooms, Glen Halik

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Though the original purpose of this thesis was to investigate the cause for criticisms of the acoustical properties of the College Auditorium, it has been enlarged to a study of other Stockton Auditoriums and rooms with the idea of securing a technique of acoustical analysis similar to that of acoustical engineers in the industries. It was planned at first to set up an oscillator and reverberation meter, but it was found that the apparatus expense would be quite prohibitive. This research was therefore confined to noise meter measurements and reverberation calculations, and includes much of architectural and engineering branches. However, …

Trichomonas Fulicae Sp. Nov. From Fulica Americana, Elizabeth G. Lash Jan 1933

Trichomonas Fulicae Sp. Nov. From Fulica Americana, Elizabeth G. Lash

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Numerous trichomonad flagelletes from the intestines or various birds have been described; but as fas as the writer has been able to discover, none from the intestine of the coot, Fulica americana. Martin and Robertson (1911) described Trichomones eberthi and T. gallinerum from the caecum of fowls; Kotlan (1923) described Tetratrichomonas avatis from the caecum of ducks; Tyzzer (1930) described flagellates from the ruffed grouse.

However, the species described by the above authors are quite different from Trichomonas to be described in this paper. This organism is definitely a member of the genus Trichomonas since it possesses the distinguishing characteristics …
