The Financing Of Education In Homestead Areas, Lester Turnbaugh Jan 1935

The Financing Of Education In Homestead Areas, Lester Turnbaugh

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Some explanation is necessary of the method of procedure in compiling material for this thesis. The first step was really taken seven years ago. At that time the writer interviewed state officials at Sacramento, California, in the hope of obtaining state aid for educational finance in the Tule Lake section of the Klamath Irrigation Project. The Governor, the department of education, and the finance department were all consulted, but no legal way was discovered of using state money for the erection of school buildings in the district mentioned. Some county money was available for payment of teachers’ salary, but none …

Projects To Stimulate Appreciation Of Literature In Secondary Schools, Emily B. Jacob Mccain Jan 1935

Projects To Stimulate Appreciation Of Literature In Secondary Schools, Emily B. Jacob Mccain

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Progressive educators have realized the crying need for schooling that will carry over into purposeful living in later life. After much experimentation and serious study, the conclusion has been made that the individual differences and interests of the students have often defeated successful teaching of literature by the old method. The use of projects is one of the most valuable ways of according careful consideration and attention to these individual differences and interests in the teaching of literature.

This study of the project in secondary literature courses has been made through visits to schools, interviews with teachers and students, questionnaires, …

Some Contributions To Iodometric Technique, Justin Kimber Dyche Jan 1935

Some Contributions To Iodometric Technique, Justin Kimber Dyche

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Analysis is a very important branch of chemistry, for it is such a practical part of the science. Analysis is itself divided into two parts. Qualitative analysis discovers what things are present in the material in question. Quantitative analysis then determines how much of each ingredient is present. This thesis considers a limited section of quantitative analysis.

This thesis deals with the use of iodine in volumetric analysis, which is called either iodimetry or iodometry. In this type of analysis, the iodine is used in solution and reacts with some other material, also in solution, and takes up electrons. That …

The Public Life And Achievements Of James Duval Phelan, Jean Tully Jan 1935

The Public Life And Achievements Of James Duval Phelan, Jean Tully

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

As a figure in the American period of California history, Mr. James D. Phelan's achievements were an outstanding example of what an honest man can do in politics. First of all, I have endeavored to show his contributions to the city of San Francisco. There is hardly any field of San Francisco life in which James D. Phelan did not leave a tremendous influence. The politics of his term as mayor were a shining model of clean and progressive measures.

As senator he kept the interest of California at heart. Through his work at the World's Columbian Exposition, he made …

Four Fundamental Factors In The Instability Of The American Home, Harold Joseph Miller

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The family may be defined as a group of interacting personalities of neer tie or blood-kin; namely, husband, wife, children, and may include grand parents. The origin of the family is not clear, since we find marriage in a rather highly developed form among the most primitive tribes. The family has taken on different forms in various places and under varying circumstances. Perhaps monogamy, the union of one man and one woman, is the most prevalent fore of marriage, not only in the United States but among all peoples and in all ages. Polygyny, the union of one man with several …

Trends In Teaching Adult Education In Texas, Bessie Cain White

All Theses

It is not new for great teachers to address their words to mature minds; they have always done thus since the days of Buddha and Socrates. However, Studebaker in his book "The American Way; points out that adult education as an organized social movement is comparatively new in American life. He says, "The great importance of the movement at present is due to the increasing co-operation between public and volunteer agencies for the general betterment of the intellectual climate of society. Pressure and change in modern life has made it necessary for civic leaders to take stock of opportunities for …

A History Of The United States Air Mail Service, Floyd M. Lawson Jan 1935

A History Of The United States Air Mail Service, Floyd M. Lawson

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

When man first learned to write, his primary objective was to have his message delivered as quickly as possible. Consequently, in ancient civilizations runners transported clay tablets from city to city, and ships sailed the known seas and rivers carrying in their holds precious cargoes of the written word. As methods of transportation were improved, the speed and safety by which communication could be relayed was likewise advanced. In fact, within the evolution of transportation progress it is possible to trace the importance and the influence of the mails. Runners were succeeded by horsemen or coaches, primitive board by modern …
