The Philosophy Of Horace, Dorothy Lorraine Hudson Apr 1936

The Philosophy Of Horace, Dorothy Lorraine Hudson

Bachelors’ Theses

In the following thesis I have endeavored to analyze the philosophy of Horace from a study of his works; to point out his independence of the philosophic systems of the day, and to show the character of his philosophy and the fundamental principles on which it was based.

I have tried to show, also, how his own philosophy affected his daily life and wherein it afforded him a singular happiness and contentment.

Plautus: The Best Expression Of The Worst In Rome, 200 B.C., John Edward Hogan Apr 1936

Plautus: The Best Expression Of The Worst In Rome, 200 B.C., John Edward Hogan

Bachelors’ Theses

Just as there is satire from Demosthenes through Juvenal to G. K. Chesterton, so there is comedy from Aristophanes through Plautus to Oscar Wilde. To show that comedy can be the gentler brand of indictment will be the task of this, our paper. It is true that, in the case or the (comic) playwright, the aim, than that of the professed censor, is rather more vaguely reprehensive. One may not deny, however, that the serious reader finds in Plautus's comedies the rationes seminales of the three hundred years' "dying fall" of the Roman Empire. In the Plautine repertoire is the …

It shall be the plan of this thesis to present a careful and detailed discussion of the various articles of costume and their related accessories from the beginning of the American Colonies through the successive periods of development up to the period lmown as the Gay Nineties. There shall be no attempt made to determine the character of our ancestors from their dress; no attempt to determine what they were or what they did. The aim of the discussion will be solely to cover the periods of dress as represented by those groups of Americans most influential in the matters …

Play And Its Relation To Behavior Problems, Laverne H. Wagner Mar 1936

Play And Its Relation To Behavior Problems, Laverne H. Wagner

Bachelors’ Theses

Whatever else it may be, play is the expenditure of surplus energy, physical, psychic and sociologic. Some have contended that it is instinctive, since all animals play. But there may be no instincts, or if there are and play be not one of them, then it is easily formed by habit. To play is animal and human, since all normal beings are impelled to exert themselves; and when this is done naturally, spontaneously and under circumstances that give pleasure and emotional satisfaction, we call it play. Otherwise, if exertion is force, monotonous, irksome, disagreeable, nonstimulating and void of pleasure, it …

Illegitimacy In The North Central States: Causes And Remedies, L. Thomas Utterback Feb 1936

Illegitimacy In The North Central States: Causes And Remedies, L. Thomas Utterback

Student Work

Social investigators are coming to regard the question of illegitimacy as a family problem rather than an isolated problem of individual disorganization. Lundberg and Lenroot in "Illegitimacy as a Child Welfare Problem" state: "Only within comparatively recent tines has illegitimacy come to be recognized as a definite social problem. Yet few topics relating to social welfare have as many divergent opinions. In its bearing upon social standards, especially those concerning family relationships, illegitimacy opens up a large field for discussion. It is a matter of prime importance in consideration of social and moral prophylaxis." The following study on illegitimacy attempts …

A Short Study Of Laplace's Equation, Sidney Teweles Jr. Feb 1936

A Short Study Of Laplace's Equation, Sidney Teweles Jr.

Bachelors’ Theses

Perhaps if I set forth my original inspiration for this thesis, the reader will be better able to understand the reason for the apparent limitations of treatment. In my study of differential equations, I had the task set before me of presenting a discussion of Laplace's equation to the class. A seemingly easy matter turned out to be quite difficult for the reason that most texts make but brief use of Laplace's equation. Thus in a mathematics book reference will be made to Laplace's equation simply as example of a mathematical process. Some of these processes are the change of …

Small Scale Mining Possibilities In Southeast Missouri, William Walbridge Weigel Jan 1936

Small Scale Mining Possibilities In Southeast Missouri, William Walbridge Weigel

Professional Degree Theses

"The disseminated lead ore bodies of St. Francois County in southeast Missouri are known for their enormous size and even grade over large areas. Several of these ore bodies are over a mile long by a quarter mile wide. They have been worked on a commensurate scale. The smallest mill in the district, at Bonne Terre, now treats 2,500 tons daily capacity. Each of these mills is supplied by a single ore hoisting shaft. The disseminated ore district of St. Francois County is bounded by the Big River-Bonne Terre fault on the north and west, by the Simms Mountain fault …

A Treatise On The Use Of Insulating Refractory Brick In Malleable Annealing Ovens, James Joseph Offutt Jan 1936

A Treatise On The Use Of Insulating Refractory Brick In Malleable Annealing Ovens, James Joseph Offutt

Professional Degree Theses

"At frequent intervals, there is developed in the refractory field some product which serves to keep this branch of industry in line in the fast moving modern era. The advent of such materials as high temperature mortars and high alumina, super refractories provided a definite mark of progress. One of the most recent and far reaching developments was made possible by the perfection of light weight, insulating fire brick. This product filled a gap which had long been an aching void to all who had made a careful study of furnaces in an effort to obtain higher efficiency. Formerly, it …

The Problems Of The Silver Dyke Mine, Dale Irwin Hayes Jan 1936

The Problems Of The Silver Dyke Mine, Dale Irwin Hayes

Professional Degree Theses

"In a newly conceived mining enterprise serious operating problems may remain concealed until encountered in the actual early operating period of the property. The major problems of the Silver Dyke Mine were of this nature. This mine is the property of the Silver Dyke Mining company, a subsidiary of the American Zinc, Lead and Smelting Company. It is situated about five miles from Neihart, Montana. A three-and-one-half-mile trucking road connects the mine with a railway siding. The property is in the Little Belt Mountains, at an elevation of about seven thousand feet. The climate is severe, the winters long, and …

The Minerals Of New Mexico, Lee Mcguinness Jan 1936

The Minerals Of New Mexico, Lee Mcguinness

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

Inorganic bodies known as minerals make up, either in whole rock-masses or in isolated form, the material of the upper crust of the earth. Through the evidence furnished by this study of meteorites, we also infer that other bodies in the universe are made up of minerals, or at least those portions of them which are represented by meteorites.

Since minerals are, then, important in making up the observable part of the earth, a study of them is importance in any study of the earth. Because the variety of minerals occurring in New Mexico is large, it will be of …

A Study Of The Opportunities For Adult Education In The City Of Columbus Indiana As An Index To Future Plans To Meet The Needs Of The Local Community, Daisy M. Linson

Graduate Thesis Collection

This study, therefore, is made for a two-fold purpose. In the first place we hope to indicate some trends that are prevalent in the local community. In the second place, we trust that there may be some suggestions made as to how the community may supply the needs of the adult for further education. It is not expected that the result of this study will be final in its conclusions nor in its bearing on or application to other similar situations in Indiana or elsewhere.

Roofing Granules, Morris Harold Grober Jan 1936

Roofing Granules, Morris Harold Grober

Bachelors Theses

"An abundant amount of chats and clays of various kinds is available in Missouri. In the mining districts of south-eastern and south-western Missouri enormous piles of gang known as chats have accumulated. The mining companies desire to rid themselves of this accumulation and would dispose of the chats at a very low price. In northern Missouri and in the diaspore district of central Missouri suitable clays could be found which may be had for a small royalty, mining and transportation costs. Some of the requirements for roofing granules are that they have (1) a size limited by 10 and 30 …

In plain language I have endeavored to give the reader a picture of the obstacles met, and overcome by the engineer in his search for placer deposits of gold and platinum with the prospect drill in the jungle"--Foreword, page 1.

The Effect Of Ammonium Carbonate And Aluminum Chloride On The Porosity Of Refractory Material, William Gail Twyman Jan 1936

The Effect Of Ammonium Carbonate And Aluminum Chloride On The Porosity Of Refractory Material, William Gail Twyman

Bachelors Theses

"At the present time there are many insulating materials on the market. The temperatures at which these may be utilized vary from the lower temperature range of 100 degrees C, to a high temperature range of 2800 degrees C. Those insulating materials falling in the class of low temperature insulators have very little usage in commercial manufacturing processes therefore they will not be discussed in this paper. Materials that have a range from 600 degrees C to 2800 degrees C are of vital importance to the manufacturing processes. It is this type of material which we will endeavor to discuss …

The Use Of Fluorspar As A Flux Ingredient In Ceramic Bodies, Edward Henry Frauenfelder Jan 1936

The Use Of Fluorspar As A Flux Ingredient In Ceramic Bodies, Edward Henry Frauenfelder

Bachelors Theses

"The term "flux" is a relative one and does not refer to any particular class of substances. A flux is any material which will lower the softening, fusion, or liquifying sic temperature of another Bases act as fluxes to siliceous substances while in basic compositions like Portland cement, silica is a flux. Feldspar is a flux for white ware mixtures, and is regarded as a refractory in the low temperature enamels. Although fluorspar is used in considerable quantities in many divisions of the ceramic industry, namely: the glassware division, the enamels division, and in the manufacture of cement, its use …
