The Art Of Upton Sinclair, Ralph L. Kozlowicz May 1936

The Art Of Upton Sinclair, Ralph L. Kozlowicz

Bachelors’ Theses

The intention of this thesis is to discuss the art of Upton Sinclair. With the conception of art in literature as we know it, in mind, and also a general idea of the type of writing Mr. Sinclair has done, the orthodox association of art and literature in this case seems hardly compatible. Many critics question the existence of any art at all in Sinclair’s writings, and in their interpretation call it by other names. If his works had cause in effecting a desired result, there should be no reason to bar his writings from the category of art. His …

Typical Women Characters In Three Of Gerhart Hauptmann's Naturalistic Dramas, Florence Cohen May 1936

Typical Women Characters In Three Of Gerhart Hauptmann's Naturalistic Dramas, Florence Cohen

Bachelors’ Theses

Innumerable papers dealing with various phases of Hauptmann's works have been written. Many, if not, all of them emphasize the story of his Dramas, the construction from the standpoint of naturalism, etc. Few, if any, however, have stressed Hauptmann as a character delineator, nor have they emphasized his treatment of the women. It is for this reason that the writer wishes to discuss three of Hauptmann 's Naturalistic Social Dramas emphasizing the treatment of the women with special regard to heredity and environment.

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Today the under-privileged are by no means confined to the mentally and physically handicapped. Since 1929 the number has greatly increased because of our faulty economic and social organization. Many healthy men who are both able and willing to work have been forced into idleness because of inability to secure a position. Extension classes in "Mental Hygiene" and "Social Case Work" conducted under the direction of the head of the Sociology Department of the Utah State Agricultural College during 1934-35, decided to make a study of conditions actually existing among Ogden City's victims of the depression, with particular emphasis on …

An Analytical Study Of Utah Verse To Determine What Utah Poetry Might Be Recommended For Study In Elementary And Secondary Utah Schools, Lawrence James Sorenson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study has a primary and a secondary purpose. The primary purpose is to call attention to the question of whether or not Utah verse should be introduced for study into the elementary and secondary schools of Utah. The author does not want to imply that he will give a satisfactory answer to this question. He hopes, however, that this effort will emphasize the question and stimulate thought concerning the same. It seems reasonable to suppose that most of the Utah school officials who are concerned in any way with literary material for school curricula will agree that, if there …

A Survey Of Housing Conditions And Proposed Housing For The Utah State Agricultural College, Lenore Lewis

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

One of the most obvious as well as the most complex problems with which the Utah State Agricultural College has to deal is that of finding and keeping suitable living quarters for the students under its care. But with the extraordinarily rapid increase in the number of young people attending the college it has become a most perplexing problem.

The purpose of study is to find some scientific facts for controlling household insects. It was hoped that simple home remedies for controlling insects would be effective in this study.

The methods recommended are …

A Proposed Vocational Guidance Program For The Phillis Wheatley High School Houston, Texas, J. Chilton Lee May 1936

A Proposed Vocational Guidance Program For The Phillis Wheatley High School Houston, Texas, J. Chilton Lee

All Theses

Vocational guidance knows nothing of absolute failure and absolute success, but neither is it a game of chance. A game of dice is a game of chance to the man who plays it in the back street, yet the actuarian could predict his winnings or losings almost to the cent if he can assume that the man plays the game consistently. In the same way, vocational guidance is but little more than a chance to the director of guidance whose only reliance is upon intuition and "hunches". On the other hand, it is not too much to hope that someday …

The Vitamin D And Provitamin D Content Of Some Varieties Of Utah Wheat, Harold M. Nielsen May 1936

The Vitamin D And Provitamin D Content Of Some Varieties Of Utah Wheat, Harold M. Nielsen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Cereal grains were known to be notably deficient in the anti-rachitic principle even before the discovery of vitamin D. Clinicians had associated a type of rickets of infancy, characterized by an over-weight, flabby, bowlegged condition, with a diet consisting mainly of cereals. Mellanby (1) in 1921 concluded that this type of rickets is induced by overfeeding with carbohydrates. He also showed in the same report, however, that oatmeal, although it contains less carbohydrates than the other grains tested, possesses a special tendency toward rachitogenesis.
