The Social Adjustment And The Bachelor Woman Of San Antonio, Austin And Prairie View, Texas, Vivian E. Lowery

All Theses

At every turn you can see the products of women activities. The inventions of machines, bringing about great developments in industry, reorganizing production, and transferring much of women's participation in manufacture from home to factory, has so changed the customs and standard of existence and so increased the cost of living that it has revolutionized both the home life find the work life of individuals and has brought new problems in the wake of the many benefits derived.

Large numbers of women have been caught, as it were, in the suction of the high powered wheels of industry. To some …

Social Conditions Of Territorial Kansas, Clifford Dwight Miller Jul 1936

Social Conditions Of Territorial Kansas, Clifford Dwight Miller

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

Who were the people making up Kansas Territory, or simply “K.T.”, as correspondence was addressed from everywhere? Coming to Kansas from New England and the Middle Atlantic states through the agency of the Emigrant Aid Company, from the Middle and Western states, from the Southern states, and from foreign countries, they had a variety of folk lore and pioneer technique they could put to work. It seems that they would constitute an extremely chaotic society when viewed from this standpoint; yet, they were all sired by progressive peoples, and, if we consider them from the viewpoint of culture and social …

The Principal Women Of Barrie's Plays, Mary Flavia Hale Jul 1936

The Principal Women Of Barrie's Plays, Mary Flavia Hale

Bachelors’ Theses

Quite frequently in history, a playwright - like Sophocles, or Shakespeare, or Moliere - has become a man of letters; but not often has the process been reversed and an instance been revealed of a man of letters who has become a playwright. Nearly all of the great English poets of the nineteenth century tried to write plays - Scott, Wordsworth, Byron, Shelley, Keats, Browning, Tennyson; and there is not a good playwright among them. Browning, of course, affords us the most striking instance in the nineteenth century of the failure, as a dramatist, of a really great man of …

Thoreau And Gandhi: A Study In Contrasts And Comparisons, Stewart W. Smith Jul 1936

Thoreau And Gandhi: A Study In Contrasts And Comparisons, Stewart W. Smith

Bachelors’ Theses

The present study is an attempt to indicate, through an examination of the sources, the extent of Gandhi’s indebtedness to Thoreau for the ideas and principles involved in the formers revolutionary programs both in Africa and India. The fact that Gandhi is indebted to Thoreau is readily admitted by most scholars who have written on Gandhi. How¬ ever, until the present study, no attempt has been made to examine and coordinate such material as is available. It is unfortunate that not all of Gandhi’s writings have been collected and translated into English. Until such time as this is done no …

Some Catholic Contacts In Colonial New England, Mary Margaret Luettgen Jul 1936

Some Catholic Contacts In Colonial New England, Mary Margaret Luettgen

Bachelors’ Theses

In the early seventeenth century the steep, austere hills of New England provided a stage set for the enactment of one of the most inspirational dramas that that portion of the New World and yet beheld. In a certain sense it might be termed a tragic-historical drama - a series of successes and reversals in the church in pioneer America. The protagonist was faith; that deep, all absorbing and potent factor that created such eminent actors as Father Thury, Bigot, and Rasle - a diminutive host of chosen soldiers mustered under Christ's banner, true builders of a nation. their zeal, …

The Crusades And Their Results On Civilization, Mary Eulalia Jul 1936

The Crusades And Their Results On Civilization, Mary Eulalia

Bachelors’ Theses

The aim of this thesis is to discuss the results of the Crusades, undertaken, for the recovery of the Holy Land from the Saracens and Turks, by the Western Nations of Europe. Though the conventional dates, (1095-1291), include the most active period of the Crusades, it is best to consider them as the medieval period in the long conflict between East and West. Most historians distinguish eight Crusades, four in the Holy Land, two against Egypt, one against Constantinople, and one against the Moslems in North Africa. However, we must think of these as simply high spots in one broad …

Joseph Hilaire Belloc's Poetry, M. Clementia Schueler Jul 1936

Joseph Hilaire Belloc's Poetry, M. Clementia Schueler

Bachelors’ Theses

No one who knows modern literature will deny that Hilaire Belloc is one of the greatest of the English writers of today, and will give due honor for the excellent prose of his essays, biographies, and novels; but, undoubtedly, only a few will associate his name with modern poetry or accredit to him any poetical contribution of literary value. Why should this be so? Why should it seem strange to speak of Belloc as a poet? Is it because his poetry is inferior, obscure, or in any way new; or, is it not rather because his small collection of verse …

The Development Of Projects In The Elementary Grades, Florence Kuehn Jul 1936

The Development Of Projects In The Elementary Grades, Florence Kuehn

Bachelors’ Theses

The advocates of the project method claim that the project method brings the school close to "real life" by the use of concrete situations in the environment of the child. To organize a curriculum wholly upon the basis of activities of life, rather than in terms of subjects is ideally desirable. The old saying that one learns to do by doing is as true at the present time as at any time. When the children are engaged in activities that they enjoy, they enter it zealously, and besides acquire veritable, incidental knowledge, attitudes, and new interests which will keep them busy …

Contributions The Negro Has Made To American Music, Ona Arlene Fowler Jul 1936

Contributions The Negro Has Made To American Music, Ona Arlene Fowler

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

Excerpt: "The writing of this handbook was motivated by the realization of the fact that the numerous contributions which the Negro has made to the music of this country have not been recognized sufficiently by the American people, both whites and Negroes. The writer felt that by making material concerning the various phases of Negro music available in the form of a handbook, teachers of music appreciation in the typical Negro secondary schools of America might use it as reference or supplementary material to the regular textbook. In this manner a more widespread appreciation for Negro music in its various …
