The Tirty Years' War And Its Influence On Later History, William P. Kingston
The Tirty Years' War And Its Influence On Later History, William P. Kingston
Bachelors’ Theses
Many historians have taken it upon themselves to defend either the Catholic or the Protestant faction between the Peace of Augsburg(1555) and the Peace of Westphalia (1648). The majority defend the Protestants with no real justification, thus making an unprejudiced and reliable source of information difficult to find. These authors, who defend the Protestants and oppose the Catholics, naturally denounce all the imperialistic policies of the Habsburgs and their House of Austria. All Habsburgs are tyrants, according to many of these historians. In the past few years, there has been an historic revival in Germany which has done much to …

The Political Ideas In Colonial Literature, 1607-1800, Alberta J. Mckenna
Bachelors’ Theses
Over three centuries ago at Jamestown, Virginia, a group of Englishmen settled and erected a few rude huts on the edge of the primeval forest. Here one must go to find the beginning of English occupancy in America, and since it proved to be a permanent occupancy one must of necessity find the early beginning of literature - American literature.
A History Of Education In Crawford County, Ralph O. Borreson
A History Of Education In Crawford County, Ralph O. Borreson
Student Work
Eighty years have elapsed since that Saturday in November, 1856, when two pioneers worked hurriedly in the shade of Mason's Grove to complete a small log structure that was to be Crawford county's first school. In those eight decades the handful of pupils has grown to more than forty-five hundred; the one young inexperienced teacher has been replaced by two hundred and sixty well trained instructors and the primitive log schoolhouse given way to hundreds of buildings whose total value is near a million dollars. In 1856 the cost of the school was met by small, individual contributions from the …
Rosas; A Complete Picture, Ruth Taylor Westfall
Rosas; A Complete Picture, Ruth Taylor Westfall
Spanish and Portuguese ETDs
Rosas is considered the greatest enigma of Latin American history. To some he was a monster; to others and idol. By his persecution of the cultured classes, he made his enemies famous; A gaucho and a federalist, he destroyed his own world, created a nation, and delivered Argentina to his foes. No man was more bitterly hated; nor has any other tyrant been given more attention in literature. Many South American poets in authors or remember solely for their bitter denunciations of the Rosas regime.
To get a complete picture of Rosas it is necessary to take both the contemporary …
A Comparison Of Individual And Group Methods Of Teaching Work-Type Reading In The Fourth Grades Of The Albuquerque Public Schools, Elizabeth C. Westerfield
A Comparison Of Individual And Group Methods Of Teaching Work-Type Reading In The Fourth Grades Of The Albuquerque Public Schools, Elizabeth C. Westerfield
Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs
In this study a somewhat different line of research is attempted. The endeavor here is to evaluate two approaches to the teaching of work-type reading. One of these is the traditional or group plan, the other an individualized scheme a great deal like that recently mentioned by Washburn.
An answer here is sought as to whether work type reading is taught more effectively to fourth grade children through group instruction or by a highly individualized technique. The measure of effectiveness was that as indicated by scores on standardized tests interpreted as reading ages, and other evidence that this will be …
Anti-Romantic Attitudes In The Novels Of Jane Austen, Mildred T. Faris
Anti-Romantic Attitudes In The Novels Of Jane Austen, Mildred T. Faris
English Language and Literature ETDs
It is the purpose of this paper to discuss the anti-romantic attitudes of Jane Austen. Her novels are realistic, almost wholly free of the element of Romanticism which claimed so large a part of the literature of the period (late eighteenth and early nineteenth century). It is obvious at the first casual reading of Jane Austen that, although she lived during the period of the great Romantic movement and was writing Northanger Abbey at the same time that Wordsworth was writing "Preface to the Lyrical Ballads," there is no suggestion that she knew or cared to know the impulse that …

Recreation For Leisure Time Activities In Rural Negro Communities, Juliet Rosamond Love

The kernel of the whole rural problem, as it is clearly stated by resident Kenyon L. Butterfield, is to maintain happy and efficient families upon the farm. An Analysis Of The Trend Of Newspaper Advertising For The Years 1931-1935, Lucretia Moffatt
Bachelors’ Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to show the more. definite trend toward use of newspaper advertising today than was apparent in the past, in spite of the depressing effects of the economic crash of 1929. Advertising lineage, for most products, experienced a decided decrease between the years 1931 and 1935, but as budgets begin to increase, more and more money is being given over for advertising, the largest part of which is being used for buying newspaper space.

Comparison Between Shakespeare's Richard Iii And The Historical Richard Iii, M. De Lourdes Foy
Bachelors’ Theses
The end and aim of the writer of this thesis is to make a study of Shakespeare's Richard III as well as the historical Richard III. The point at issue is to see wherein and how far Shakespeare has disregarded historical facts and personages.
In order to carry out a work of this nature it is necessary to make a thorough study and analysis of the vast drama that completes a series of historical plays written by the "Bard of Avon". It is not only necessary to have a thorough understanding of the play but 1a also expedient to become …
Music Syllabus For The Village School, Jewell Wright Love
Music Syllabus For The Village School, Jewell Wright Love
All Theses
There are two main reasons for the renewed consideration which school administrators are giving to the place of music in the curriculum. The first is the enormously increased amount of music in life generally. This is due, not only to the rapid urbanizing of our population but to the marvelous mechanical inventions, especially the phonograph and radio which make music accessible everywhere. In most cultured homes in our country, there are pianos or other Instruments upon which some member of the family has had instruction, although in many homes the advent of the radio has led to less playing upon …

A Survey Of The Vocational Status Of Ninty-Seven Graduates Of Booker T. Washington High School, Houston, Texas, Ruth Eleanor Love
A Survey Of The Vocational Status Of Ninty-Seven Graduates Of Booker T. Washington High School, Houston, Texas, Ruth Eleanor Love
All Theses
The interest of the general public in education, the extent and rapid growth of education as a public enterprise, and the everchanging curricula of secondary schools are well known subjects and are of frequent concern. Of less concern, however, is the extent to which the secondary school accomplishes its purpose in preparing its products for the preeminent aim of all education—that of life. This is particularly true with reference to Negro secondary schools in Texas, which are, for most part, academic. It is the purpose of this study, therefore, to ascertain pertinent information concerning the extent to which the high …

The Teaching Of Geography In The Third Grade, Eliza Nowlin Marshall
The Teaching Of Geography In The Third Grade, Eliza Nowlin Marshall
All Theses
The purpose of this study is to simplify the teaching of Third Grade Geography. Modern education suggests a change in the selection and organization of subject matter for the third grade, that may be as great an aid as all the other materials that were used in the past combined.
Third Grade Geography is largely observational. Every effort should be made to show the child his true relation to his immediate surroundings. Directions over the child's outside experiences seek the things he knows about; he observes the weather conditions, and the use of the thermometer is a good device to …

Two commencements are held annually, at which times many teachers are graduated and sent to the various communities to render educational services. The institution has made actual studies of schools in rural communities and has made curricula changes designed to meet the needs of rural teachers. Social Studies In The High Schools To Meet The Changing Social Order, Mabel Motte Barnwell
All Theses
The public schools of a dynamic society are charged with the difficult responsibilities of serving a conscious agent for social improvement. Satisfactory assumption of this responsibility requires that the public schools proceed in such a manner that two major objectives will be accomplished. The first of these is that of making it possible for each boy and girl to acquire an understanding of the present social order, its complexities, its problems, its hope, and its memories.
The second in that of making it possible for each boy and girl to achieve the maximum of his or her potential ability to contribute to and live …

Having taught fifteen years in the moral schools of Nacogdoches County and adjacent counties is one of the primary factors which has helped me to become interested in the work of the rural schools as a whole. Another factor that stimulated my Interest was my study in previous courses in Rural Education. I am very much indebted to my previous instructor, Professor E, S . Richards for offering the courses in the Prairie View Extension school located at Nacogdoches, Texas. It was through the purpose of these courses that I was aroused as never before to the direct needs of …

The Place Of Play In An Educational Program For A Rural School, Rosa Malone Smith
All Theses
The writer is attempting to devise some methods where by the conditions of recreation in the rural can be improved. From the study of a community, I found that the reason recreation has been neglected is because the people in the rural have such difficulty in making a living and must spend so much of their time in this important effect that no time is left for organized recreation.
The principle occupation carried on in this community is farming. All of the families are tenants, living in small houses, located near each other.
They rise before day in order to …

A Study Of The School Lunch Situation In Houston County Texas, Addie M. A. Ware
All Theses
The development of the physical health of children has come to be regarded as an important part of education. A better understanding of the relation of diet to disease has resulted in studies of the food habits and health habits of children with a view to improving them. Through studies made by doctors and dietitians, it has been found that health depends to a very large extent on correct eating habits, and that children must have food in proper quantities and of the right kind. Physical health is essential to the development of mental and moral health, which make for …

Fredrich Froebel,1 who established the first kindergarten said that man and nature were both created by the same divine Being and must be governed by the same laws. He reasoned that as the farmer puts nothing new into the seed which he plants, but merely gives them the right kind of soil and the right care, keeping the weeds from choking them, giving them a sufficient amount of water and room in which to grow putting poles or props for the tendrils of climbing plants to cling to, and loosening the roots to give more air and freedom for …

Social Conditioning Of Personality As Shown By Study Of 250 Summer School Students, Leona J. Atherton Smith
Social Conditioning Of Personality As Shown By Study Of 250 Summer School Students, Leona J. Atherton Smith
All Theses
The complex pattern of behavior problems centering around social conditioning is one of the little-explored areas on the sociological map. Every student has been and will be involved in social conditioning throughout all or most of his life. Any education that aims to prepare for the problems of personal and social living should provide a thorough study of marriage, parental education, and family adjustments, as well as the more theoretical fields of pure science. This thesis is designed to gain, a scientific, candid, and dispassionate study of personality in relation to social conditioning in order to aid all those who …

Vocational Guidance Program In A. J. Moore High School, Waco, Texas, Timmoxena Furlow Arnold
All Theses
Recognition of the Vocational objective of the high school implies an obligation for vocational guidance. The need for guidance relative to vocational subjects is as great as the need for guidance relative to the subjects not having direct vocational objectives. In fact the need probably is greater. But vocational guidance is not confined to securing efficient adjustment between the students and the Vocational subjects of the curriculum. It looks forward to the time when the student will engage in some vocational activity, and it endeavors to guide him so that there will be a minimum of maladjustment in his vocational …
The Monetary Policies Of The New Deal, Lloyd Emerson Scott
The Monetary Policies Of The New Deal, Lloyd Emerson Scott
All Theses
Numerous books and thousands of articles have been written about the New Deal, its aims, objectives, and leaders. It is likely that all of the material that has been written has been the out-spoken thoughts of the various writers. Much of the material has been criticism both constructive and destructive, that is to say, some of the suggestions that have been offered if put into practice would have been helpful while others would have been detrimental. The material that has been constructive has been the result of careful thought on the part of the writer, while the other has hot. …
