Ths Ghosts In Shakespeare’S Plays, Jane Adelle Gutbrod Jan 1938

Ths Ghosts In Shakespeare’S Plays, Jane Adelle Gutbrod

Bachelors’ Theses

To understand, fully the scenes in which the ghosts appear in Shakespeare's plays, it is necessary to understand the current superstitions as well as the current philosophical and theological opinions regarding ghosts in Elizabethan times. A brief survey of Elizabethan theology is an Immense aid in developing an appreciation of the ghost scenes in Shakespeare's plays. The basic material in this chapter was obtained from Chapter IX of lily B. Campbell's book, Shakespeare's Tragic Heroes.

A Discussion And Analysis Of The Novels Of Frank Norris, Albert Fred Mazzie Jan 1938

A Discussion And Analysis Of The Novels Of Frank Norris, Albert Fred Mazzie

Bachelors’ Theses

In all my attempts to find some material on Frank Norris, I have been balked by tne scarcity of works written on his life and endeavors in the field of fiction. Many books have a chapter or references to discuss his novels. No one has yet written, however, to my knowledge, a book dealing exclusively with him and his untiring labors in writing the stories which he has left behind him.

An Annotated Bibliography Of The Pedagogy Of Speech In The Secondary School, Mary Jean Schwalbach Jan 1938

An Annotated Bibliography Of The Pedagogy Of Speech In The Secondary School, Mary Jean Schwalbach

Bachelors’ Theses

The problem of finding what had been written concerning new approaches in the teaching of Speech led the compiler of this bibliography to a consideration of two periodicals that deal with the subject: The Quarterly Journal of Speech and the English Journal. These two publications are most likely to be accessible to workers tn this field.

The Philosophy Of National Socialism, Alex Peter Le Grand Jan 1938

The Philosophy Of National Socialism, Alex Peter Le Grand

Bachelors’ Theses

When 1918 brought the Weimar Constitution and the birth of Democracy in Germany the Germans felt that their dream of a better, freer, fairer society had triumphed. The old caste differences which existed during the monarchy were disappearing. Like the United States, theirs was the land of liberty, freedom, and equality; and for the first time the great German people themselves directed the destiny of the German nation. The popular belief was that the post-war reconstruction of Germany was best served by a liberal government. Tet in 1953, when only fifteen years of age, German Democracy strangled itself and left …

Ulceromembraneous Stomatitis, Emil Cerrato Jan 1938

Ulceromembraneous Stomatitis, Emil Cerrato

Bachelors’ Theses

Recognizing the fact that considerable data has been recorded and still more work actually has been accomplished in the alleviation of the pain and suffering incident to the infection of Vincent, yet, from the comparative standpoint with what is known of other pathological conditions, this disease does not seem to receive the attention which it demands. With the exception of a numbered few, none of the more modern scientific works have any lengthy discussion in reference to this disease.

The Origin Of The English Parliament, J. P. Kelly Jan 1938

The Origin Of The English Parliament, J. P. Kelly

Bachelors’ Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to show how the present Parliament of England is really the product of long political evolution. The modern English Parliament is a representative body having legislative and executive powers. At the present time, the English people exercise their power through their elected representatives; and the repreaentatives that are elected to the House of Commons are the supreme authority.

Unemployed Transients, M. James Kellner Jan 1938

Unemployed Transients, M. James Kellner

Bachelors’ Theses

The migration of individuals and family groups from one community to another is ordinarily no cause for alarm as long as they are self supporting, and do not affect the traditions or incur the prejudices of the community into which they have moved. But, as was the case in 1930, when an increasing number or unemployed started to migrate. a general alarm was voiced by all communities in "the country, due to the fact that the unemployed migrator sought relief from the Community Fund.

Dramatic Technique In The Dido Episode Of Vergil's Aeneid, Mary Magdeleine Mueller Jan 1938

Dramatic Technique In The Dido Episode Of Vergil's Aeneid, Mary Magdeleine Mueller

Bachelors’ Theses

My purpose in selecting Vergil’s tragedy of Dido as a thesis topic was to present this story from a different point of view than it is usually considered. A great deal of material has been written on various aspects of The Aeneid, but very little work has been done with the Dido episode, at least considering it as an exemplification of the characteristics of Greek tragedy. For this reason the ideas and statements given here are, necessarily, largely original and unqualified. The scarcity of authoritative sources created a difficulty, for there was decidedly little material with which to confirm …

Graphical Representations Of Singular Solutions Of Differential Equations, Kathryn Lois Pitman Jan 1938

Graphical Representations Of Singular Solutions Of Differential Equations, Kathryn Lois Pitman

Bachelors’ Theses

The first men to detect singular solutions of differential equations were Leibniz, Brook Taylor and Clairaut. The direct method of attack used by each man in attaining these solutions is not known, but a short history of each man and what he has contributed to mathematics can be given. Gottfried Wilhelm von Leibniz (1646-1716) was born in Leipsic, Germany, and was the son of a professor of law in a nearby university. He was well-educated in law himself, expecting to follow in the profession of his father. But not being under the necessity of earning his living, he enrolled at …

Compilation Of Books In The Field Of Advertising That Have Been Written Or Copyrighted From January, 1928 To March, 1938, Eileen Mary Curtin

Bachelors’ Theses

The purpose of this thesis is simply to provide the faculty and students of the College of Journalism with an easily accessible file for reference work in the field of Advertising. It was compiled with the intention that those persons especially interested in advertising developments, would have an index of all the material that has been written in the last ten years in that and allied fields. Since there is no other complete listing of Advertising books including such subjects as radio, typography, publicity etc. readily available in compact form, it is hoped that this thesis can be used as …

General John J. Pershing And America's Part In The World War In Episode Of Efficient Effort For A Mistaken Cause, Marvin Bell Jan 1938

General John J. Pershing And America's Part In The World War In Episode Of Efficient Effort For A Mistaken Cause, Marvin Bell

Bachelors’ Theses

General John J. Pershing was chosen to command the American Expeditionary Force in Europe by President Wilson, an honor gained not only by his record of achievement, but also for his extreme loyalty to Government authority under hampering circumstances. Pershing was known as one of the coolest men under fire and possessed a character which compelled men not only to die, but to work, grumbling perhaps but respecting him.

Although the far to end war ended November 11, 1918, the world has never been free of war since. War ravaged Ireland and Russia for years after the World War. Revolutions …

The Euripidean Sources Of Racine's Tragedies, Lee Charles Econom Jan 1938

The Euripidean Sources Of Racine's Tragedies, Lee Charles Econom

Bachelors’ Theses

Euripides, the youngest of the tragic poets, was born in 485 B.C. and died in 406. The span of his life coincides with the most triumphant period of Athenian history. His father was names Mnesarchides, his mother Kleito. They were apparently of wealth, for Euripides had considerable property and was "Proxenum" or consul of Magnesia. Another indication of wealth is the fact that Euripides was the possessor of a library, something especially rare then.

The Poetry Of Edna St. Vincent Millay, Geraldine Cox Jan 1938

The Poetry Of Edna St. Vincent Millay, Geraldine Cox

Bachelors’ Theses

The late Thomas Hardy once remarked that there were only two great things in the United States: what he called our "recessional buildings", and the poetry of Edna St. Vincent Millay. Such praise of Miss Millay's work is proof that she has reached an enviable position in twentieth century literature. To our way of thinking such approbation from the late dean of modern novelists exceeds even the honor of winning the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1922 with the poem, The Ballad of the Harp-Weaver.

An Inquiry Into The Importance Of High School Speech To College Students, Kathleen Margaret Foley Jan 1938

An Inquiry Into The Importance Of High School Speech To College Students, Kathleen Margaret Foley

Bachelors’ Theses

That the ability to speak effectively, to phrase ideas in a compelling fashion, is an asset is not denied. The emphasis place upon good speech by business men, by professional men, and by educators attests to its importance.

The Protection Of The Laborer As A Creditor, Thomas F. Desmond Jan 1938

The Protection Of The Laborer As A Creditor, Thomas F. Desmond

Bachelors’ Theses

The economic well being of any person, family, or social group is a vital factor which influences every apparent activity of their existence. At the same time, this financial status plays an important part in determining the mental .outlooks and ultimate status of both the individual and the organization. This monetary determination is peculiar to Western civilization, with the American people probably leading in the emphasis upon financial position. The goal set up and considered as. success- seems to be the acquisition of a fortune, with happiness in life, family considerations, or philanthropic endeavor regarded as secondary .and worthy of …

Corrosion Of Aluminum In Alkaline Solutions, George Oliver Doherty Jan 1938

Corrosion Of Aluminum In Alkaline Solutions, George Oliver Doherty

Bachelors’ Theses

Aluminum has been an important member of the metal group since its isolation about 100 years ago. It has sprung into prominence in the commercial field and in household use in the last thirty years. The metal is light, possesses good thermal and electrical conductivity and as an alloy with other metals takes on a surprising degree of strength.

The problem of producing aluminum cheaply enough to make it practical has finally been overcome to a great extent. It now remains to be seen just what further uses there are to which this new metal may be put. Aluminum may …

A Study To Determine A Workable Program For The Training Of Leaders For Service In The Church Of Christ In Siam, Newton Carl Elder Jan 1938

A Study To Determine A Workable Program For The Training Of Leaders For Service In The Church Of Christ In Siam, Newton Carl Elder

Honors Papers

"New occasions -beach new duties" but do not always make clear the course one should follow in performing those duties. It is necessary to stand off and view the situation in which one finds himself in order to disentangle the various threads that at close range seem to run hopelessly together. This thesis is an effort to clarify the situation in which the author has been placed by the members of the Siam Mission, but for which he has had little preparation either in training or experience.

Early in the year 1955, the author and his family were temporarily assigned …

The Early Financing Of The Consolidated Association Of The Planters Of Louisiana, Emile P. Grenier Jan 1938

The Early Financing Of The Consolidated Association Of The Planters Of Louisiana, Emile P. Grenier

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The Louisiana State University is now in possession of valuable records of the defunct "Consolidated Association of the Planters of Louisiana”: a bank which was established over a century ago. Although this Institution played an important role in the economic development of Louisiana, relatively little is known about it today. Taking the available records as a source of information, the present study describes and analyzes the organization and the operation of this now type of banking. Particular emphasis is placed upon the fact that the institution was financed through the sale of bonds guaranteed by the State; and for that …

Radio And The English Teacher, Doris L. Lynn

Graduate Thesis Collection

This study was begun unconsciously two years ago when through the efforts of the teaching force of the school where I was principal, we secured a public address system of radio.  During that time, the realization of the worth of the radio as an educational factor grew daily.
