The Growth Of Elementary And Secondary Education In Russell County, Kansas, Elmer L. Dougherty Aug 1940

The Growth Of Elementary And Secondary Education In Russell County, Kansas, Elmer L. Dougherty

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

Throughout this work we shall carry one phase of the growth of education as it applies to a restricted geographical area. We must note from the beginning that the available material is very fragmentary even in a country whose existence spans only slightly more than half a century. No attempt was made by school administrators to keep an accurate history of their school systems. Records have been lost or misplaced. As a result, at this date it is impossible to clearly picture every part of the whole educational system within this restricted area , but the evidence which is still …

A Comparative Study Of The Family Background ..., John Eddie Gooden Aug 1940

A Comparative Study Of The Family Background ..., John Eddie Gooden

All Theses

Introduction

The writer is mindful of the fact that the progress in the sciences underlying mastery of the principles of human behavior necessarily suffers in comparison with the progress made in the sciences of inert matter, Man is largely a stranger in the world he has created. The inventions he has made, and the great number of discoveries brought to the fore have him entangled in a web similar to that woven by the spider. The science of life has not kept pace with the knowledge of inert matter. As a partial offset to the excessive attention given to technological …

A Brief Study Of The Nursery Schools In The United States And On Prairie View State College's Campus, Maurine E. Smith

A brief study of the Nursery Schools presents a picture to me of vital importance and is an important project in the United States.

In 1924 there were twenty eight Nursery Schools in eleven states, while four years later, eighty five Nursery Schools were found in the District of Columbia alone. At the present time six hundred Nursery Schools are distributed throughout the United States.

The Nursery School acts as a supplication to the home in helping many of the million parents to understand their children from a physical, social, and mental viewpoint, in such a way as the parents …

A Survey Of Thirty Selected Choirs From Twelve Church Denominations In Houston, Texas, Erie Katrina Lee Aug 1940

A Survey Of Thirty Selected Choirs From Twelve Church Denominations In Houston, Texas, Erie Katrina Lee

All Theses

Any choir, regardless of its size and location, can do a commendable piece of work provided it is fairly well balanced and that the director is competent, and that it has the cooperation of the minister and the good will of the congregation. The trend of modern or present day choirs is to play and sing jazz and sloppy compositions. This takes away greatly from the dignity and order of a well regulated church service. Although many churches are falling into this category, it behooves each director, who knows better, to point the way to others by training his group …

An Experimental Study To Determine The Most Appropriate Colors For Various Hues Of Negro Women, Janet Patricia Lawton Aug 1940

An Experimental Study To Determine The Most Appropriate Colors For Various Hues Of Negro Women, Janet Patricia Lawton

All Theses

This study was selected because the Negro race is one that possess many color hues and because there is little or no work done toward helping these various colored women select colors that will bring out their natural charm. While this is not a complete treatment of color and color harmony it is hoped that it will serve as a basis for further study and will make more colored women color conscious, if nothing more.

Many books, periodicals, and pamplets are frequently written concerning the most suitable colors for blonds, brunetts, and auburns, but the Negro has more than these …

A Comparative Study Of 100 Delinquent Boys And Girls And 100 Non-Delinquent Boys And Girls In Selected Areas Of Fort Worth, Texas, Katherine Rosabell Love

All Theses

Previous studies have been made by sociologists to find the basic causes of delinquency. Some of the causes found were: a lack of proper recreational facilities, broken homes, and low economic status. With these factors being given as underlying causes of delinquency, it is evident that many non-delinquents have made progress under similiar conditions.

The writer has compared the delinquent and nondelinquent on the basis of: (1) familial, (2) economic, (3) educational, and (4) institutional characteristics in order to discover the extent to which these groups differ in these characteristics. A solution to this problem is yet to be sought.

A Study Of The Deficiency Of Food Consumption In Twenty-Five Families In Two Communities In Brazoria County, Texas, Louise Williams

All Theses

Every child should have the privilege of having good nutrition. It is well known that sufficient quantity of good and wholesome food is the "body's first need. The famous Bill of Rights for children created by President Herbert Hoover, states that there should be no child in America to suffer from undernourishment. Many diseases may be traced to some fault in the diet or food habits of the individual. The underlying causes of malnutrition have been stated to be ignorance, lack of home control, and poverty. These are the home or community conditions responsible for the factors actually causing the …

Five Special Techniques That May Be Used In Building An Extra-Curricular Activity Program In A Small Rural High School, Roberta Johnson Brown Aug 1940

Five Special Techniques That May Be Used In Building An Extra-Curricular Activity Program In A Small Rural High School, Roberta Johnson Brown

All Theses

Although widely used the term Extra-Curricular Activities is misleading. Its origin dates back to the time when the purpose of the school was conceived to be to teach the subjects contained in the program of studies. Good teaching was understood to be to teach a combination of skills. The recitation method was the accepted procedure. Such student organization as were in existence were looked upon in addition to the curriculum as serving another purpose and hence were extra-curricular activities.

The school has come to realize the important distinction between the mastery of school tasks, and the training that takes place …

An Experiment In Unit Teaching, Rowena Weatherly Aug 1940

An Experiment In Unit Teaching, Rowena Weatherly

All Theses

As a teacher in a small rural school for the past four years, I have gotten much knowledge from experience. After observation and examination of school lunches, listening to discussions of patrons of the school and visiting in the homes, I was led to believe that the parents did not know how to properly feed their children. Since proper feeding id a factor of vital importance in the health of individuals, the conditions that existed in the community were both interesting and serious.

This thesis is based on a study made in the Lincolnville community at Gatesville, Texas. In this …

A Tentative Guidance Program For The Negro Junior High School Grade Levels Of Texas, Ossalee Veda Punche Aug 1940

A Tentative Guidance Program For The Negro Junior High School Grade Levels Of Texas, Ossalee Veda Punche

All Theses

Guidance is one of the major functions of the Junior High School. Recognition of individual differences in ability, aptitudes and interests, and varied curriculum, to meet these differences require that the Junior High School give the students opportunities for making choices. Choice, then, on the part of students implies a type of guidance so that they may select the types of subjects that will have the greatest values for them.

The curriculum should be worked out to give wide and varied contacts with social and economic activities of the community. The problem of this thesis, then, centers around the following …

A Historical Study Of The Malpighian Tubules Of Gryllus Assimilis, Charlie A. Sims Aug 1940

A Historical Study Of The Malpighian Tubules Of Gryllus Assimilis, Charlie A. Sims

All Theses

Up to this time several investigations have been reported upon the structure of the excretory system in various orthoptera, particularly in Acrididae (Schindler 1878; Tietz '23, Faussez, 1887), in Gryllidae (Sayce, 1899; Bordas, '02, '13 and in Blattidae (Miall and Benny, 1886). They differed in nearly every instance as to the anatomy and histology of the malpighian tubules.7 Stuart made an anatomical and a histological study of the malpighian tubules in Melanoplus differentialis. He described the malpighian tubules as being long flexuous, thread like structures about 172 to 312 in number, lying with their ends free in the body …

The Effects Of Cooking On The Protein Content Of Three Foods, Dorothy Dimsdale Sansom Aug 1940

The Effects Of Cooking On The Protein Content Of Three Foods, Dorothy Dimsdale Sansom

All Theses

This piece of work is done to determine the effect of cooking on the protein in foods, that is, to see if there is any loss of the percent of protein in foods upon cooking, Bogert (3) points out that proteins are coagulated by heat and if the temperature is very high for any length of time the coagulated protein becomes tough and leather-like. Heat also tends to dry protein foods out and cause them to become relatively hard and difficult to digest. We know that certain extractives, which are responsible for the flavor of meats and other protein foods, …

Uses And Value Of Seatwork Materials In Arithmetic In The Primary Grades, Crezetta Mosley Smith Aug 1940

Uses And Value Of Seatwork Materials In Arithmetic In The Primary Grades, Crezetta Mosley Smith

All Theses

Seatwork material has been designed as one of the best possible means for doing effective work in the schoolroom in the primary grades. Books and educational periodicals introduce the uses and results of it, and as the years pass new and better ideas of its uses are given. The up to date teacher takes advantage of these new ideas by making use of them. Consequently the use of seatwork material has found its way to many schoolrooms and has marked a constant change and improvement in teaching. The teacher who tries to understand how children learn and why some don't …

A Survey Of The Physical Aspects Of Twenty Rural Homes In Wood County, Emma Lillian Montgomery Aug 1940

A Survey Of The Physical Aspects Of Twenty Rural Homes In Wood County, Emma Lillian Montgomery

All Theses

In a study of this kind the writer feels that there must be some basic facts from which to work: therefore, a survey was made of twenty Negro farm homes in Wood county to determine facts as indicated by a questionnaire form.

These families are located within the rural section of Quitman, Texas, a town located in Northeast Texas.

The families included in this study rank in various groups as to professional status, some are school teachers, however, the greatest number are farmers.

There has been no definite study made of the exterior conditions of Negro homes in this county, …

A Program Of Homemaking Education For Chester High School, Chester, Texas, Esther Ruth Bennette Aug 1940

A Program Of Homemaking Education For Chester High School, Chester, Texas, Esther Ruth Bennette

All Theses

The problem of constructing a course in Homemaking Education is a new feature of curriculum building. Experts have been able to set up goals and aims, but they have not been able to set up a definite catalogue of activities that could be recommended. Different locations present different problems and would of necessity require different modes of attack and would, in the final analysis lead to different outcomes. The basic interrogation then is, "What is the problem or what are the problems involved?"

In this thesis the writer's problem may be expressed in the following questions: 1. What are the …

Improving The Curriculum In M. R. Wood Negro School In Sugar Land, Texas, Charlotte M. Mayfield Aug 1940

Improving The Curriculum In M. R. Wood Negro School In Sugar Land, Texas, Charlotte M. Mayfield

All Theses

There is a division of opinion as to merits and the purposes of the village school of the present. Many persons who attended one and two-teacher schools at the beginning of the century are of the opinion that the modern village school is inferior to the village school of thirty years ago. Some think that the curriculum of the small school is inadequate in that it attempts to teach subject matter drawn largely from an urban situation. In many respects the present-day rural school is better than the rural school before 1900.1 The physical plants are better equipped; the …

Health Program For Spot Taylor Rural School Community Based On Its Environmental Influences, Juanita C. Agent Aug 1940

Health Program For Spot Taylor Rural School Community Based On Its Environmental Influences, Juanita C. Agent

All Theses

The experiences of the writer in the field of health activities in schools has forced her to the conclusion that the fundamental basis for school health programs should be a well-planned program for health instruction, and that other health activities as such should be secondary. There should, however, be a correlation between the two. Permanent improvement in child health and in adult health will come through instruction in the habits of healthful living. Having organized our health program on this basis, definite improvement of health habits in the children have been noted, which have given the children valuable health knowledge …

A Study Of The Relationship Of Clothing To The Pre-School Child's Health And Behavior On Prairie View's Campus, Velma Terry

All Theses

There are many problems concerning the modern mothers in the selecting of children's clothing; namely, selecting those clothes and styles that are "best suited to the child's personality, and to the color of his hair, eyes, and complexion. The parents must also consider the selection from psychological and hygenic stand points; therefore, the child's behavior is influenced by the style of the garment he wears, as well as his health.

Because of the many problems concerning the modern mothers, in the selecting of children's clothes, the writer feels that the importance of selecting the right styles to suit the child's …
