The History And Development Of The Tithe With Special Reference To Legalistic Aberrations, Otto Fink Apr 1941

The History And Development Of The Tithe With Special Reference To Legalistic Aberrations, Otto Fink

Bachelor of Divinity

The author wishes to state that the Mosaic system of tithing has always puzzled him. It was not, however, until recent years that he began to take a deeper interest in the general subject of tithing. Due to the fact that many of our Lutheran pastors and layman are tithers, and due also to the fact that the scriptures speak so often of giving, he has taken this opportunity to investigate and trace the history and development of tithing from remote antiquity to the present day. The study is of inestimable value to him. It should be understood that no …

The Chief Heretical Groups Of The Early Church, Lewis Gerbhardt Apr 1941

The Chief Heretical Groups Of The Early Church, Lewis Gerbhardt

Bachelor of Divinity

Peace and unity within the Church of the first and second century was an unattainable then as it is today. The early church experienced internal conflicts more trying than many of the persecutions and results fat more disastrous. Christianity had been given the world as the only true religion, the only religion professing Jesus Christ, the only name under heaven whereby salvation could be had. Many systems of religion and thought existed which likewise claimed to deal authoritatively with man and his soul, however conflicts between Christianity and these pagan beliefs were either short-lived or caused little opposition. The real …

The Mystical Union Of The Believer With Christ, Waldemar Streufert Apr 1941

The Mystical Union Of The Believer With Christ, Waldemar Streufert

Bachelor of Divinity

There is a certain restless dissatisfaction in man as he pursues his daily tasks and endeavors to enjoy his present life to the full. In the case of the believer, there is not this uncertainty and groping. But in the case of the unconverted, there is many a one who substitutes an “unknowab1e Infinity for the true God. Man will strive earnestly to satisfy his craving after the true Reality, but rarely, if ever, will he try to find the truth about God in His Word. Instead of this objective source, man seeks communion with nature and thus hopes to …

The Church And Its Battle With Gnosticism, Luther Koepke Apr 1941

The Church And Its Battle With Gnosticism, Luther Koepke

Bachelor of Divinity

As we look at Gnosticism we find it a counterfeit of the true and Christ-founded Church. To the people living at the height of the Gnostic heresy this erroneous teaching and Christianity must have seemed similar. Similar terms, and similar concepts, but Gnosticism offering these by a different method. Gnosticism came in similar garb, offered like benefits, but gave soul-destroying results.

The Reformation In The Relation To Elementary Education, E P. Weber Apr 1941

The Reformation In The Relation To Elementary Education, E P. Weber

Bachelor of Divinity

While here and there a practical deduction may be drawn, the one aim of this paper is to present from a historical angle the Reformation in its relation to elementary education. In order to limit ourselves to the requirements of a treatise of this sort, we shall refer for the most part only to the educational thoughts of the Reformation author, Martin Luther.

A Critical Analysis Of The Harmony Of The Passion Story, Robert Gussick Apr 1941

A Critical Analysis Of The Harmony Of The Passion Story, Robert Gussick

Bachelor of Divinity

In these pages we have attempted to show that the four gospels present a harmonious account of the Passion of Jesus Christ. In order to facilitate the work we have divided this thesis into two parts.

The Catilinian Conspiracy : A Translation From French, Walter E. Bass Apr 1941

The Catilinian Conspiracy : A Translation From French, Walter E. Bass

Master's Theses

Of all the characters of the Ancient World none is better known today, both to scholars and to those whose knowledge of that history is small, than Cicero; Statesman, Orator, and Author. And of all the achievements of that great man the most widely known is the part he took, in cooperation with the Senatorial party in crushing the Catilinian Conspiracy.

Despite the fact that this is his outstanding achievement, however, there is nowhere in English a full history of that period. In text books containing the orations of Cicero, will be found a chapter or so on the subject, …

The Reflection Of The United States Steel Corporation In America's Industrial Drama, Ethne Flanagan Apr 1941

The Reflection Of The United States Steel Corporation In America's Industrial Drama, Ethne Flanagan

Honors Theses

We need only to open our eyes and cast a glance about us to recognize that our modern twentieth century life is girded with steel. Steel is the very key product of the present era of the evolution of man. In the beginning it was stone, then bronze, and then iron, but today it is steel which conditions the industrialized political, economic, and social life of our country.

A History Of Gwathmey Baptist Church, R Stuart Grizzard Apr 1941

A History Of Gwathmey Baptist Church, R Stuart Grizzard

Honors Theses

Gwathmey Baptist Church has had a somewhat checkered career. As pointed out heretofore, the community has withered away; and there have been periods when the flame of existence all but petered out, only to be rekindled by some of the faithful, under the leadership of a man or woman who would take a deep interest in the church and devote patient effort and time to its resuscitation.

Seafaring Virginia, Edith M. Harker Apr 1941

Seafaring Virginia, Edith M. Harker

Honors Theses

It is the desire of the writer to create in you a growing interest in the part of the waters through and around Virginia played in her sea going life. Her home ports, shipping, builders, owners, names of vessels, cargoes, distant ports, dangers, and westward eyes.

Most of the material has come from the Virginia Gazettes of 1736 through 1766. The bibliography acknowledges the remainder.

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

Statement of the problem: It is the purpose of this study (1) to collect and preserve the records of those events, characters, and movements that have influenced the educational system of San Saba County, Texas, and have made the present system what it is and (2) to point out the weaknesses found in the school systems and offer recommendations for correcting them.

Delimitations of the problem: This study includes only the white schools of the county, as there were only 14 Negro scholastics in the county in August, 1880, and 43 such scholastics in the county in August, 1939. Most …

The History Of The Referendum In New Mexico, Roy C. Stumph Feb 1941

The History Of The Referendum In New Mexico, Roy C. Stumph

Political Science ETDs

The purpose of this thesis is to describe the history and operation of the referendum in New Mexico. A resume of the history of the referendum in the United States has also been included to provide a background for understanding New Mexico's experience with this direct form of government. The thesis reveals that the law has been used only in a few instances, and that the people, far from using it in a reckless manner, have been conservative. Furthermore, the law in New Mexico is so difficult to operate because of the high percentages required, that only special interests with …

An Ethnological Study Of Michoacán In The Sixteenth, Seventeenth, Eighteenth Centuries, Carolyn Miles Osborne Feb 1941

An Ethnological Study Of Michoacán In The Sixteenth, Seventeenth, Eighteenth Centuries, Carolyn Miles Osborne

Anthropology ETDs

The purpose of this thesis is a study of life in the Michoacán proceeding the conquest and the changes in this life during the sixteenth, seventeenth, and eighteenth centuries due to the rule of the Spaniards. An attempt has been made to define, in the manner of common to acculturation studies, the cultural base upon which the pro-conquest Tarascans lived and to show how that was blended with the European or changed outright by it. The end of the eighteenth century was selected as a stopping place inasmuch as the rebellion which eventually resulted in Moxican freedom from Spain began …

The Electrolytic Separation Of Copper, Nickel And Precious Metals From Copper-Nickel Matte, Oden Cass Garst Jan 1941

The Electrolytic Separation Of Copper, Nickel And Precious Metals From Copper-Nickel Matte, Oden Cass Garst

Professional Degree Theses

"During the last few years considerable interest has been shown in domestic reserves of strategic metals. Broadly speaking, the strategic materials of any nation are those materials of commerce essential to the country both in time of war and peace, which are not produced within the boundaries of that country in sufficient quantities to supply even peace-time requirements. The United States is far more fortunate than other countries inasmuch as there are only eight metals which may be classified as being strategic metals; namely, aluminum, antimony, chromium, manganese, nickel, mercury, tin, and tungsten. The work on nickel covered herein was …

Coal Mine Safety Engineering, Charles F. Herbert Jan 1941

Coal Mine Safety Engineering, Charles F. Herbert

Professional Degree Theses

"The progress of coal mine safety may be compared to the development in mining through the years. When coal was first discovered centuries ago, it was taken from river or creek beds and from the outcroppings on the sides of hills. After removing the most accessible coal from the surface, it was necessary to mine the coal by quarrying or stripping the overburden from the coal seams. It is reasonable to assume that when such operations began, accidents of a serious nature also began to occur. Such accidents were no doubt due to rolling rocks or stones, falling material, and …

Some Causes For Porosity And Leakage In Non-Ferrous Castings, Alfred H. Hesse Jan 1941

Some Causes For Porosity And Leakage In Non-Ferrous Castings, Alfred H. Hesse

Professional Degree Theses

"Non-ferrous copper base alloys find many applications in industry. Among these alloys one finds the tin bronzes rather widely used for many purposes, and by delving still farther one finds pressure castings as one of their important applications. In many foundries the percentage of rejections due to leakage or porosity is quite high. This is obviously very costly since leakage is generally only found after machining. It is with a view to determine the causes for leakage in pressure castings and to devise methods for its prevention that the work described in this thesis was undertaken. It is not intended …

The Court Of Federigo Da Montefeltro Duke Of Urbino, Marjorie Batson Plume Jan 1941

The Court Of Federigo Da Montefeltro Duke Of Urbino, Marjorie Batson Plume

Honors Papers

The character of this thesis has been controlled to a great extent by the material which has been available to me. My original intention had been to recreate a picture of the life in court during Federigo da Montefeltro's rule, to describe the fabric of the building, its decorations and furnishings and the people who frequent it. I found, however, after I had begun my research that much of the material which I needed was either non-existent or unavailable.

In the following chapters I have tried to bring out the important role which the court of Urbino played in the …

Careers Of High School Basketball Players, Jewel D. Michael Jan 1941

Careers Of High School Basketball Players, Jewel D. Michael

Graduate Thesis Collection

Popular opinion is divided into two general groups as to the value of basketball activities, one group holding that training in basketball will transfer to actual life situations, while the other contends that it is a waste of time to spend hours in practicing and in trips which necessitate absence from academic work. In general, this study seeks to give some evidence on this question, through an examination of the subsequent careers or the boys who were basketball players in Frankfort High School during the years from 1919-1940.

The Effect Of Glaze Fit Upon The Strength Of Missouri Zadock, Karl Emil Krill, Floyd Rolland Elliott Jan 1941

The Effect Of Glaze Fit Upon The Strength Of Missouri Zadock, Karl Emil Krill, Floyd Rolland Elliott

Bachelors Theses

"We know that, in the case of a beam, the really effective part of the cross-sectional area is that part farthest from the neutral axis. The I-beam, with most of the central area eliminated, is just as strong as is the rectangular beam of similar outside dimensions. Why should not the glaze on a piece of ceramic ware play as important a part in the strength of the piece as does the outermost area in a beam? Microscopic cracks in the flanges of an I-beam weaken it appreciably. Might not a parallel case exist in a piece of glazed pottery …

Characteristics Of Pyrometric Cone Equivalent Test Furnaces, Alfred W. Allen, Joseph T. Dusza Jan 1941

Characteristics Of Pyrometric Cone Equivalent Test Furnaces, Alfred W. Allen, Joseph T. Dusza

Bachelors Theses

"Though the method of determining the pyrometric cone equivalent of various silicate materials used in the refractories industry has been standardized by the American Society for Testing Materials (A.S.T.M. Designation: C24-35) as to the rate of heating, method of preparation of sample, mounting of test cones, and the interpretation of results, there still remains some variation in the results obtained by different operators using different types of P.C.E. furnaces. The three types of furnaces most generally used are: the Fulton-Coursen Granular Resistance Furnace, the Denver Fireclay Furnace developed by the American Refractories Institute using gas, and the General Refractories' Oxy-acetylene …

The Chemical Engineering Aspects Of The Saint Louis Smoke Problem, George Augustus Hale Jan 1941

The Chemical Engineering Aspects Of The Saint Louis Smoke Problem, George Augustus Hale

Professional Degree Theses

"During past years smokeless combustion of fuels has been conscientiously sought only in those larger industrial plants where fuel costs were a major factor. Smoke was considered a sign of prosperity in some moderate and even large size industrial practice, and no wholehearted effort was made to utilize the vast amount of energy lost through the smoke stack in the form of unoxidized carbon.

Inefficient combustion, which is so common today, is due in part to a wrong approach to the study of this problem. Industrial combustion, as a science, has, to a certain extent, been left to the mechanical …

The Scope Of Functions Delegated To The Engineering Department Of A Typical, Progressive Metal Mine, Alvin William Knoerr Jan 1941

The Scope Of Functions Delegated To The Engineering Department Of A Typical, Progressive Metal Mine, Alvin William Knoerr

Professional Degree Theses

"Nearly every conscientious engineering student will subject his college courses to an occasional critical analysis in an effort to assure himself that the studies he is pursuing will be a valuable aid to him in future practice. Possibly this skeptical attitude is accentuated by published letters of graduate mining engineers who decry the courses of mining schools in general and clamor for more practicability and higher specialization. Pure science as it is taught may at times seem to be very remote from any possible practical application. Mathematics may appear to be highly abstract. It seems quite logical that the degree …

Dewatering & Rehabilitating The Oronogo-Webb City Mining Area, Robert Knox Stroup Jan 1941

Dewatering & Rehabilitating The Oronogo-Webb City Mining Area, Robert Knox Stroup

Professional Degree Theses

"The object of this paper is to describe the dewatering of the Oronogo-Webb City mining area, and the subsequent mining operations which were carried on in the northern section of that area. It deals with the development in that district during the time the writer was familiar with operations there; i.e., from 1935 to 1939, inclusive, and no attempt is made to describe the open pit mining and local milling which have been carried out as a latter part of this same project. Also, no attempt is made to describe the surface drainage work which was planned and carried out …

The Relative Merits Of The Electrolytic Deposit And The Galvanic Nickel Deposit When Used To Produce Enamel Adherence, Marvin Edward Pingel Jan 1941

The Relative Merits Of The Electrolytic Deposit And The Galvanic Nickel Deposit When Used To Produce Enamel Adherence, Marvin Edward Pingel

Bachelors Theses

"The purpose of this paper is to determin sic if nickel deposited electrolytically from a nickel bath at 100ʻF. or less gives the same adherence qualities to enameling steel that nickel deposited galvanically at 160-180ʻF. produces"--Purpose of This Paper, page 1.

Dry Pressing Refractory Insulating Brick, Frank Clarence Steimke Jan 1941

Dry Pressing Refractory Insulating Brick, Frank Clarence Steimke

Bachelors Theses

"The expensive process of grinding the insulating brick and the slow production methods of hand forming led to the possibilities of dry pressing the brick. The use of the dry press would increase production, give greater uniformity to the brick and materially reduce grinding if not eliminating it entirely. Since present day combustives were either impractical or else impossible to use, some new material must be found. Three materials presented themselves, napthalene, sulfur, and petroleum coke. The former for its low melting temperature and the latter two for their complete volatility at high temperatures and low if not negligible resiliency. …

Firing Behavior Of Missouri Plastic Fire Clay, William E. Crockett Jan 1941

Firing Behavior Of Missouri Plastic Fire Clay, William E. Crockett

Bachelors Theses

"There are two districts in Missouri in which plastic fire clay occurs. The oldest and least significant of these deposits is the "Cheltenham", in the St. Louis area. The most prominent area in which plastic fire clay occurs is generally termed the "east central" district. Included in this district are Calloway, Montgomery, Audrain, Warren, Boone, Monroe, Pike and Lincoln Counties. The clay as tested in this report occurs in Boone County, near Columbia. A plastic fire clay does not have as high a P.C.E. (pyrometric cone equivalent) as the ordinary flint and semi-flint clays, but its high plasticity warrants its …
