This thesis is a survey of the history of taxation in Hays, Kansas, from 1926 to 1941. Contains a history of the community, a municipal profile, zoning maps, and taxation information. Taxes are administered according to state laws. The county executes the laws of the state and distributes to the city the tax returns for which they have made a levy. Hays is considered here as a small unit representative of conditions in general in Kansas. The author has made a study of an assemblage of fossils from the Blacktail Range near Dillon Montana with the purpose in view of attempting a correlation of that group with the fauna of the Big Snowy Group. Fossils have also been obtained from a limestone formation in northwestern Montana and from four different areas in the Amsden formation in central and western Mont­ana.

The purpose of this report is to collect geologic data concerning two Montana talc occurrences at Helena and Ennis and to offer some explanation as to their origin. The two deposits cited are in somewhat similar lithologic settings and both possess the same mineralogical and structural features. Several months were required to produce a single gram of indium. Consequently, the industrial history of the metal is extremely short. In view of the unique properties that indium has demonstrated in this short period, it is probable that indium is still in its early stage of development. Very little work has been done towards the recovery of zinc from mine water because the zinc content of the water is generally low. As different from copper, which can very easily be replaced by iron in any of its solutions, zinc is very high up in the electro-chemical series and so the few metals above zinc, most of which are rare and hence expensive, cannot be used to replace zinc from its solution.

The problem considered in this report is one of the mineralogy and mode of formation of the extremely pure, large bodies of vermiculite. Mineralogically the ultrabasic intrusive, with which the economic mineral is associated, presents an array of rather unusual minerals. Fumaric acid, an unsaturated acid, condensed with diethylene glycol forms diethylene glycol fumarate, a resinous product of high molecular weight. This reaction is typical of condensation reactions. This study involved the testing of seventy-six wells and thirty cisterns in representative rural districts of Crawford County, using methods specified by the American Public Health Association in the eighth edition of Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Sewage.

The results of the tests showed that only fourteen of the 106 wells and cisterns tested did not yield Escherichia coli. Of the ninety-two polluted drinking water supplies twenty-seven were from cisterns, while sixty-five were from wells. Of these sixty-five only five of the fourteen deep wells in the group showed evidence of contamination.
