A Study Of Intra-Urban Mobility In Omaha, Magdalene Pickens Jan 1947

A Study Of Intra-Urban Mobility In Omaha, Magdalene Pickens

Student Work

"Mobility" is moving about, from one place to another. The word urban is from the Latin word, "urbanus", meaning "belonging to a city". "Intra" is a prefix meaning "within", taken from the Latin preposition "intra", which has the same meaning. Intra-urban mobility then, is the moving from place to place of the individual or family within the city. This thesis will treat of the intra-urban mobility of Omaha, Nebraska and its suburban areas, for the period of three years, from 1942 to 1945.

Unification Of Lutheran Social Agencies In Nebraska, Walter A. Juergensen Jan 1947

Unification Of Lutheran Social Agencies In Nebraska, Walter A. Juergensen

Student Work

The Lutheran Church is becoming more aware of its responsibility over against social welfare work. However, the very fact that there are so many divisions, also known as synods or conferences, within the Lutheran Church itself, immediately proves a hindrance in carrying out its ministry of mercy. What is the past record of the Lutheran Church in welfare work? Which organizations are in existence which help carry on this work as a Whole? What is meant by Lutheran social welfare work? What is the history of each of the Lutheran welfare agencies found in Nebraska? Is it not possible to …

An Analytical Study Of Children's Radio Listening Interest, Habits And Attitudes, Paul J. Heideman Jan 1947

An Analytical Study Of Children's Radio Listening Interest, Habits And Attitudes, Paul J. Heideman

Student Work

June 30, 1946 was unique from an educator's point of view. The radio, the press, and every conceivable means of communication had been pressed in to service to prepare the American public and the world at large for one of the greatest scientific experiments ever undertaken by man. In this group were, without doubt, many boys and girls of elementary school age, with interest heightened and curiosity sharpened by weeks of anxious waiting. Though the reception was generally poor due to static conditions and many older members of the group lost interest, these children were not satisfied till the announcer …

The Use Of Audio-Visual Aids In Music Education In California, Peter B. Pinkerton Jan 1947

The Use Of Audio-Visual Aids In Music Education In California, Peter B. Pinkerton

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

During my brief career as an instructor in the Quartermaster School, Camp Lee, Va., in 1945-46, I became interested in the use of audio-visual aids by the Army in teaching soldiers various Army procedures. I was subjected to an Army course in the use of Audio-visual aids, and later I designed visual aids for use in the Quartermaster School. At that time I compared the use of these aids by the Army with the possible use of the aids in music education. When I returned to the College of the Pacific, I enrolled in a summer session course in audio-visual …

The History Of Tuolumne County During The Gold Rush, Harry C. Tremain Jan 1947

The History Of Tuolumne County During The Gold Rush, Harry C. Tremain

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Back in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, in the heart of the Mother Lode, lies Tuolumne County, whose history is rich with memories of the days of forty-nine. It was in this country of yesterdays, during those frenzied days of gold, that men fought and toiled and died for that precious metal. Miners in search of this precious substance penetrated into its forests, prospected up and down its canyons, and climbed its steep and rugged mountains. Towns sprang up overnight and disappeared almost as quickly. The miners were forever moving on to richer diggings in search of the “El …

Some Microtechnical Experiments And Recommendations Of New Prestaining Techniques, Edward D. Wood Jan 1947

Some Microtechnical Experiments And Recommendations Of New Prestaining Techniques, Edward D. Wood

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The preparation and staining of biological structures for microscopic examination is of extreme importance to the science of biology since almost all phases of biological advance are, at least to some degree, dependent upon microtechnical methods. Nevertheless, research workers and students of biological science are sooner or later impressed with the inadequacy of many of the microtechnical methods used by them and their colleagues. In the field of microtechnique there is difficulty in finding standardized methods which will uniformly bring optimum results. Throughout most procedures there seem to be variables over which no definite controls have been established. Microtechniques have, …

The Technical Development Of The Oboe As Shown Through The Literature Of The Instrument From The Eighteenth Century To The Present, Janet A. Degroote Jan 1947

The Technical Development Of The Oboe As Shown Through The Literature Of The Instrument From The Eighteenth Century To The Present, Janet A. Degroote

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

In a brief survey of this history of the oboe, it is necessary to return to primitive instruments. It is impossible to give a definite date at which the oboe may have originated, but Schwartz, in this Story of Musical Instruments, accepts the periond of the Fourth Dynasty in Egypt, or about 3700 B.C., as the date of the oldest specimens of the early forms.1 We also know of their existence in the Mesopotamian culture of 2800 B.C. A shrill, double-reed instructment with some finger-holes is known to have exited in Greece about 1500 B.C., when that civilization was …

The Sociological Aspects Of The Wind-Band In American Community Life, Clayton Augustus Long Jan 1947

The Sociological Aspects Of The Wind-Band In American Community Life, Clayton Augustus Long

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Comparatively little literature has been written about the wind-band as a musical institution.1 still less has been recorded regarding the integrative social potenti- alities of the wind-band in American musical life--especi- ally for the horden of "Mr. and Mrs. Average Citizen" who constitute the back-bone of our Nation's communities. Specialized and localized efforts are being made throughout the country toward making musical life a definite part of community life. General observation tends to leave us believing that strides in this direction are just beginning and that the impetus will increase.

Contributions To The Study On Helminth Fauna Of Dillon Beach, Francis C. Gale Jan 1947

Contributions To The Study On Helminth Fauna Of Dillon Beach, Francis C. Gale

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Studies on trematodes of marine organisms of the Pacific Coast have been of a scattered and fragmentary nature. J. Stafford (1904) collected and described a number of trematodes from fishes of the north Pacific, but, in his historical survey, Manter (1926) fails to mention specifically any studies covering the waters south of Canada. More recently, in the United States, several contributions to the field have been made by Dr. John E. Guberlet at the University of Washington and at the College of the Pacific by Dr. Alden Noble, under whose guidance this study was made. James Park (1937) revised the …

The Development Of A Course Of Orientation In The Sacramento High School, Sacramento, California, And The Major Problems Of Its Administration, Alice Claxton Taggart

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The orientation course in the Sacramento Senior High School has developed withint the school. In making a study of this orientation course, it seems important to make a study of some representative schools in the west and middle west sections of our country. In order to determine that schools where orientation was included in the course of study, I wrote to Professor James H. Corson, Dean of Personnel and Professor of Education in charge of courses of counseling and guidance at the College of the Pacific in Stockton, Califonria. I also wrote to Dr. E. A. Krug, Associate Professor of …

Some Principles, Practices And Techniques In Musical Therapy, Wilhelmina Keniston Harbert Jan 1947

Some Principles, Practices And Techniques In Musical Therapy, Wilhelmina Keniston Harbert

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

One of the purposes in writing this thesis has been to present to the reader some of the guiding principles and practices which have grown outof the writer's experiences in Musical Guidance and Therapy.

During the years immediately preceding the first World War, assignments as a volunteer music worker in hospitals and settlement houses in and around Boston gave the writer practical experience in such institutions as the North End Settlement House, the Home for Crippled Children, and McLean Hospital for the mentally ill.

Some of the experiences provides a type of education which could not have been obtained in …

A Study Of Frustration Tolerance In Handicapped Children, Barbara Ellen Bower Jan 1947

A Study Of Frustration Tolerance In Handicapped Children, Barbara Ellen Bower

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

What is adjustment? There are almost as many ways of defining it as there are ways of achieving it. To anwer the question one must first try to find the common factor of the varied definitions of adjustment. Sheviakov and Friedberg in their report of the Eight Year Study say, Desirable adjustment was thought of, generally as a process of maturation and adaptation, during which the individual is able to integrate successfully (i.e., without neurotic compromises or delinquent episodes) his primitive impulses and drives with those expectations or demands which are imposed upon him (with reference to his age, sex, …

Public Speaking In California Political History, 1850-1920, Marjorie Susan Larsen Jan 1947

Public Speaking In California Political History, 1850-1920, Marjorie Susan Larsen

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

California began with an Indian society which was station and provincial. From this territory Spanish invaders, seeking adventure and wealth, erected an outpost which was someday to be- A come the empire of the West." The short period of Mexican domination influenced by Spanish tradition brought a change in this empire. The search for gold, the search for new homes and ad- venture, ended the life of the sleepy province. The annexation of California to the United States meant a new life and new problems for many. Through her people and through their willing- ness to fight for their honor …

A School Camping Program For California, Willard Thomas Hancock Jan 1947

A School Camping Program For California, Willard Thomas Hancock

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to develop a blueprint for a school camping program in California based on academic, recreational and social objectives, and develping these objectives through a "real-life" situation. In order that this blueprint be founded on sound camping principles a brief history of the camping movement will be presented showing the gradual evolution from early, crude, militaristic types to the present day camp with modern educational philosophy. Also the effects of changing economic conditions on the type of camper and the need for camps available to all will be pointed out. Chapter II will present a …

Special Phases Of The Early History Of Calaveras County, California, Ethelyn E. Wood Jan 1947

Special Phases Of The Early History Of Calaveras County, California, Ethelyn E. Wood

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

A person living in Calaveras County is constantly reminded of the glorious past when the mines and camps were in full swing. The old buildings with their iron shutters, the great piles of worked-over gravel, and the stories of the old-timers all stimulate a person's curiosity about the romantic past. Therefore, it has been my ambition since first coming into the county to make a serious study of the early days and put down my findings in an organized paper. There are no printed works at all complete on the county as a whole. Mason's History of Amador County and …
