This problem arises out of the general field of the development of American Democracy as it expresses itself in the development of opportunities for all its people through the medium of education. In these times when democracy is on trial all over the world it may be profitable to review the past of the American brand to see if it has the strength of experience for the new task.

A cursory glance at the contemporary condition of the institutions entrusted with the handing on of the traditions of our culture has convinced many of the inadequacy of the whole effort. …

Effects On Different Intensities Of Utilization Upon The Underground Parts Of Short Grasses In West Central Kansas, Farrel Branson Jul 1947

Effects On Different Intensities Of Utilization Upon The Underground Parts Of Short Grasses In West Central Kansas, Farrel Branson

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

Work on root systems of forage plants has indicated that a knowledge of root relationships is fully as important in determining the actual conditions of ranges or pastures as is knowledge of the effects of grazing upon aboveground portions of plants. This is especially true in arid or semiarid regions since plants of these areas are frequently subjected to long periods of drought, high temperatures, and high wind velocities. Some xeric plants have a thickened cuticular layer, stomates that open only at night, and other mechanisms that prevent loss of water that is absorbed by the roots. However, in plants …

A Survey Of The Provisions And The Administration Of The Sales Tax And Compensating Tax Statutes Of New Mexico, William Carl Nolan Jul 1947

A Survey Of The Provisions And The Administration Of The Sales Tax And Compensating Tax Statutes Of New Mexico, William Carl Nolan

Political Science ETDs

Purposes. The largest single source of state tax revenue is collected under the provisions of the school or sales tax statue. As court decisions made the school tax inapplicable to certain types of sales, a complementary law--the compensating or use tax statute--taxing these sales was enacted. Practically every economic group and all levels of economic activity are taxed. Yet, despite the extensive scope of these statutes, surprisingly little has been written explaining the interpretations of the state laws or describing their administration. The purposes of this thesis therefore are: (1) to summarize the provisions and interpretations of the tax statutes; …

A Descriptive Analysis Of The Musculature And Osseous Systems Of The Kangaroo Rat, Dipodomys Ordii, Virgil Mathis

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

The kangaroo rats constitute the only genus, Dipodomys, of the subfamily Heteromyinae, now extant . There is fossil evidence of two other genera which are now extinct. The kangaroo rat, Dipodomys ordii richardsoni, is one of the common rodents of western Kansas . According to Hibbard (3, p. 76), "Its range extends northeastward along the Kansas river into Riley County." These animals are easily distinguished from other rodents by their long tail, long hind legs and feet, small hands, fur lined external cheek pouches, and their saltating method of locomotion. These rodents are seldom seen by the casual observer, being …

An Ecological Study Of The Pocket Gopher In An Sandy Loam Area Of Ellis County, Kansas., Benjamin Mosier Jul 1947

An Ecological Study Of The Pocket Gopher In An Sandy Loam Area Of Ellis County, Kansas., Benjamin Mosier

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

This thesis is an ecological study of the pocket gopher in a sandy loam area of Ellis County, Kansas. The economic importance of the pocket gopher varies with the type of land and with its use. It is rather obvious that the economic importance of the gopher changed with the widespread advent of the settlers into Western United States. From the viewpoint of extensive agricultural practices, the pocket gopher must be considered a menace on cultivated lands. On non-agricultural districts the condition is in general reversed. Most ecologists recognize a definite benefit from burrowing animals on wild land.

An Analytic Comparative Study Of Certain Biology Textbooks Used At Secondary School Level, Joseph E. Rankin Jul 1947

An Analytic Comparative Study Of Certain Biology Textbooks Used At Secondary School Level, Joseph E. Rankin

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

Biology is the science of life and therefore deserves every consideration in the high school curriculum. The world today is making an extensive and intelligent use of biology in solving problems of personal and social significance. Scientists have discovered that certain phases of the subject are more important to man's welfare than others. For this reason it is essential that biology be presented to our high school students not as isolated facts, but in relation to the problem of living. Through this science of living things, the student can gain a healthy respect for facts and for conclusions based on …

Arithmetical Vocabulary : A Factor In Verbal Problem Solving In Sixth Grade Arithmetic, Ernest A. Hoopes

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

During the writer's experience of teaching in elementary and junior high schools in Kansas he had excellent opportunity through supervision and classroom teaching to note a more-than-ordinary difficulty experienced by most children in the subject of arithmetic. Not only was the dull student baffled by the subject but many times the average and good students were "lost" when certain problems were presented. The exceptional. troublesomeness of this subject led the writer to ponder on the possible cause or causes of incorrect problem solving. One thing was apparent from observation and this was that many children seemed to lack a readiness …
