Some Factors Affecting Hatchability In Turkey Eggs, Dean Charles Fletcher May 1948

Some Factors Affecting Hatchability In Turkey Eggs, Dean Charles Fletcher

Biology

Low hatchability of eggs in some breeds of turkeys has long been a serious problem among turkey raisers over the entire United States. The average hatchability is approximately 65 per cent in all breeds; however, in the broad-breasted bronze variety the hatchability is only 47 per cent (1). In the Intermountain areas those hatches are appreciably lower (2). The broad-breasted bronze turkey is one of the larger breeds and is one of the best-selling varieties. Due to the initial high cost of turkey eggs (35 to 48 cents each) and the high mortality during incubation, considerable sums of money have …

The Life History And Control Of Sheep Tick, Melophagus Ovinus (Linn.), In Northern Utah, Ted Tibbetts May 1948

The Life History And Control Of Sheep Tick, Melophagus Ovinus (Linn.), In Northern Utah, Ted Tibbetts

Biology

The sheep tick, Melophagus ovinus (Linn.), is a serious ectoparasite of sheep in the sheep raising areas of Utah. Unless a more effective method of control is developed, this insect pest will continue to cause appreciable losses to the producer. Sheep ticks feed upon the blood of their hosts causing great irritation and discomfort and reduced vitality. Sheep are often so annoyed by this pest that they refuse to eat normally. This results in retardaton of growth and impairment of the best health and condition for tick-infested sheep. The sheep tick is suspected of transmitting the disease organisms, Rickettsia melophaga …

A Study Of Prematurely And Routinely Discharged Patients From Louisville General Hospital In 1946., Ruth Coleman Davidson May 1948

A Study Of Prematurely And Routinely Discharged Patients From Louisville General Hospital In 1946., Ruth Coleman Davidson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In July 1946 the Board of Health of Louisville and Jefferson County, Kentucky, announced its decision to curtail services of the public health department serving the metropolitan area surrounding and including Louisville, and the outlying agricultural region in the rural part of Jefferson County. In the past decade the combined health department for Louisville and for Jefferson County had accomplished much for the health needs of the citizens of the community. The close association, as a teaching hospital, with the University of Louisville Medical School, had helped General Hospital, the former municipal hospital known as City Hospital to become a …

The Variation Of Socio-Economic Characteristics Of Counties According To Percent Negro Population Of Each County, Fred Elester Adams May 1948

The Variation Of Socio-Economic Characteristics Of Counties According To Percent Negro Population Of Each County, Fred Elester Adams

All Theses

The problem of population is not new. Like all general questions capable of being treated more or less abstractly, it has now and then interested a thinker ever since there has been some modicum of civilization. Though considerable literature exists on problems of population, great difficulties face the investigator who sets out to examine the population situation in any specified area. These difficulties are not only from inadequate factual knowledge and quantitative data, but also from shortcomings of the theories of population which have so far been constructed. These shortcomings, however, do not render these theories useless; rather, they have …

The Spoken Word In Luther's Theology (1528-1532), George Weller May 1948

The Spoken Word In Luther's Theology (1528-1532), George Weller

Bachelor of Divinity

The present study is concerned with the nature of these as they find expression in the words of Martin Luther. We are restricting ourselves to only a portion of the first: to the Word, i.e., the Gospel. A study of the Sacraments would lead the study on to many tangents unrelated to our immediate concern. Furthermore, the genius of Lutheranism has often been identified as a Theology of the Word: it is in the sphere of a Word-principle, then, that Lutheranism’s own view should appear in its clearest expression. The Word as a means of Grace and its relation to …

Who Is The Lord Of The World To Come An Exegetical Study Of Hebrews 2:5-9, Henry J. Otten May 1948

Who Is The Lord Of The World To Come An Exegetical Study Of Hebrews 2:5-9, Henry J. Otten

Bachelor of Divinity

In treating this problem I have decided to present the subject under two general heads. I shall first carry through an exegetical study of verses five to nine to determine the scope of the words and grammar. In the midst of this exegetical study I shall pause at intervals to discuss various sidelights of the problem at hand. In the second place, I shall try to crystallize the problem and arrive at a solution.

The Preaching Of The Gospel As The Motive Power For Good Works, Philip H. Lochhaas May 1948

The Preaching Of The Gospel As The Motive Power For Good Works, Philip H. Lochhaas

Bachelor of Divinity

The problem, then, with which this paper shall deal is this: “On what basis and in what manner shall a Christian minister urge his people to perform good works?" This shall be seen, first of all, from the Bible, both the Old and the New Testaments, the unalterable Word of God, which clearly sets forth the motivation for good works. It shall be seen, secondly, that the Scriptural motivation is clearly and correctly set forth in the Symbolical nooks of the Evangelical Lutheran Church. The last section of this paper will be devoted to an analysis of sermons and writings …

Bachelor of Divinity

It will be the purpose of this thesis to bring to light the outstanding characteristics of the Veĺká Partitúra through an examination of the times used; the popularity and worth of the tunes through the years, as witnessed by their inclusion in or exclusion from the various hymnbooks of the Slovak Lutheran Church, will be noted, special attention will be given to Slavic tunes, and a comparison will be made between the Veĺká Partitúra and the Duchovná Citara, noting distinctive changes and determining reasons for differences.

Relation Of The Common Service To The Roman Mass, Martin Louis Russert May 1948

Relation Of The Common Service To The Roman Mass, Martin Louis Russert

Bachelor of Divinity

In this thesis, it is the purpose of the writer to show the relation of the Common Service to the Roman Mass. The Common Service is no doubt a derivative from the Roman Mass. When Luther set himself to the task of purifying the service which he found, he had to deal with the Roman Mass. Luther’s Formula Missae followed the Roman Mass quite faithfully in its main parts. The Roman Mass, however, did not spring up all at once. It was a gradual process. Although the Mass is almost the same as it was in the days of the …

The Concept Of Faith In Romans, Bernard Geerdes May 1948

The Concept Of Faith In Romans, Bernard Geerdes

Bachelor of Divinity

It is the object of the writer of this thesis to undertake that study. He makes no claim that this is an exhaustive study. However, we shall treat some of the chief aspects or faith which Paul deals with in Romans. And since Romans contains the core of the doctrine of Justification by Faith, we hope to have a representative view of the Biblical aspects of faith.

The purpose or this thesis is to describe Dostoyevsky's concept of suffering to point out the factors that gave rise to his concept, to compare his concept of suffering with the Christian viewpoint, and finally to show the value of Dostoyevsky' s concept of suffering to ·the world of today.

The Validity Of A Sociology Of Religion, Samuel Irven Goltermann May 1948

The Validity Of A Sociology Of Religion, Samuel Irven Goltermann

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose of this thesis is not to provide any of these. No attempt has been made to construct a valid and completely methodology, much less system, of the sociology of religion, either by primary research in, or observation of, the religious institutions and groupings, or by careful study or compilation of the theories and principles which have been advanced by other writers. Rather we have chosen to sample the literature of the field in an attempt to break down, plot out, and isolate into component elements many of the concepts which are with greater or lesser regularity used by …

The Groaning Creation- An Exegetical Study Of Romans 8:18-22, Walter James Bartling May 1948

The Groaning Creation- An Exegetical Study Of Romans 8:18-22, Walter James Bartling

Bachelor of Divinity

Though the title of our paper reads "The Groaning Creation", the purpose of our discussion will be, not so much to describe the nature of creation's groaning, but to ascertain the causes of the groaning (terminus & quo) with the special purpose of predicting and defining its end (terminus ad quem) on the basis of Rom. 8;18-22. It will be the story of sin and grace, death and life, damnation and redemption, paradise lost and paradise regained as this is reflected in the physical universe. Our chief interest, however, will be eschatological. How has God's saving activity affected nature? What …

Jesus Christ According To The Koran, John Gall May 1948

Jesus Christ According To The Koran, John Gall

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

There are twenty-five passages in the Koran, the holy book of the Mohammedans, in which the name "Jesus" appears. When perusing these passages one cannot help but be struck by the question, "What were the Koran's sources? Where did Mohammed get his knowledge of Jesus?" To answer these questions accurately has been the ambition of Islamic scholars for many years.

Conductance Of Organic Nitrogen Compounds At Their Melting Points, Leonard Joseph Burant May 1948

Conductance Of Organic Nitrogen Compounds At Their Melting Points, Leonard Joseph Burant

Bachelors’ Theses

Even though there are many practical applications using the conductance of fused salts, such as the commercial preparation of aluminum, sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium, there is very little in the literature on such conductance.

Because organic compounds as a class do not conduct as well as acids, bases, and salts, even less attention has been paid to the conductance of organic compounds in the fused state. Since the author has had some experience with organic preparations, it seemed worth while to prepare certain types of related heterocyclic organic compounds and to test their conductance in the fused state.

Study Of The Nuclear Behavior In The Basidia And Basidiospores Of Schizophyllum Commune Fries, Howard George Ehrlich May 1948

Study Of The Nuclear Behavior In The Basidia And Basidiospores Of Schizophyllum Commune Fries, Howard George Ehrlich

Bachelors’ Theses

Schizophyllum commune Fries is a member of the Hymeno mycetes. This genus has long intrigued mycologists because of the peculiar "spliit gills'' it characteristically possesses. For a long time, however, not much importance was attached to the fungus until it was reported from many parts or the world and its. pathogenicity as a wood-destroying agaric established. Despite these facts relatively little is known about the fungus. Perhaps the phase of development most completely described was the development of the "gills", Essig (1922). Because of the location of the hymenium and stipe attachment, Essig (1922) suggested that the fungus more properly …

The Identification Of Alkyl Halides Through Conversion To Alkyl 3, 5 Dinitrobenzoates By A Reaction Between The Alkyl Halide And A Metallic Salt Of The Acid, James L. Finnerty May 1948

The Identification Of Alkyl Halides Through Conversion To Alkyl 3, 5 Dinitrobenzoates By A Reaction Between The Alkyl Halide And A Metallic Salt Of The Acid, James L. Finnerty

Bachelors’ Theses

To materially aid in the identification of a series of organic compounds one must develop a new system of derivatives or suggest better methods for preparing known derivatives. The problem of characterizing alkyl halides is one in which there is room for improvement, for the best derivatives of these compounds are now prepared by means of the Grignard reaction which may often fail to give satisfactory results. Moreover, there is a series of solid alkyl esters, the 3, 5 dinitrobenzoates, which serve very well for the identification of aliphatic alcohols, and which should be applied to the alkyl halides if …

Low Temperature Tolerance Of Seven Different Species Of The Drosophila, Walter Leon Smith May 1948

Low Temperature Tolerance Of Seven Different Species Of The Drosophila, Walter Leon Smith

All Theses

The effects of low temperature upon organisms with special emphasis on insects have been an open field for research since the early part of 1800. The opinions of various workers agree that insect freezing has not been studied extensively as plant freezing. The large economic losses from tender plants and the consequent desire to develop hardy varieties have no counterpart in applied entomology with the exception of some work concerning the insecticidal effects of low temperature over given periods of time.

The Drosophila is ideally suited for experimental work and particularly where one is concerned with the relation of temperature …
