Jose Manuel De Herrera, First Ambassador Of Mexico To The United States, Beatrice S. Jenkins

History ETDs

Jose Manuel de Herrera is perhaps best known because of his stay in new Orleans in 1815-16 as emissary of the first Independent Congress of Mexico. While this mission is what brings him briefly into United States history, he had a considerable part in the Mexican War of Independence as a companion to Morales in the early journalistic and legislative work of the revolution.

The Rose In Tudor England, Janet Dyer Andrews Jun 1948

The Rose In Tudor England, Janet Dyer Andrews

Student Work

A great interest in the rose was the inspiration for this paper. Loved by poet and peasant, king and councillor, philosopher and historian, the rose is unquestionably man's favorite flower. Appearing in war and peace, at funerals and festivals, in religion, art, and literature, it is initimately linked with the lives and customs of many people and has woven a bright pattern through the whole fabric of civilization...

A Community Survey Of Opinions On Some Matters Of Education, Elsie W. Della Jun 1948

A Community Survey Of Opinions On Some Matters Of Education, Elsie W. Della

Student Work

Do public schools in America actually operate as democratic institutions as fully sensitive to the needs and wishes of the people as well as they could? Do we have, inherent in the customs and practices of school administration, an organized education which is serving its public in only a part of its ability to serve? Education today is under fire of critics who disclaim the functions that the schools are now performing. How school people shall answer these critics is a challenge to educators.

An Investigation Of Phosphate Adsorption By The Clays Montmorillonite And Kaolinite /|Cby Gordon Richard Bradford, G. R. Bradford

Theses and Dissertations

Clay minerals have widespread application in industry and play an important role in plant life (2, 17). It is the adsorptive capacity of clay which determines largely its importance to man (2). The purpose of this investigation is to interpret the mechanism of adsorption of the phosphate anion by the two clay minerals montmorillonite and kaolinite. This particular system was singled out for two reasons: 1. It has agricultural significance. 2. It is believed that if the particular phosphate adsorption mechanism is understood it will aid in an understanding of many other adsorption phenomena associated with clay.

A Study Of Fossil Resins In Huntington Canyon Coal, Ross D. Gardner Jun 1948

A Study Of Fossil Resins In Huntington Canyon Coal, Ross D. Gardner

Theses and Dissertations

The object of this investigation was to determine whether or not a certain sample of raw resin, collected by Mr. Adriaan Nagelvoort from coal from Huntington Canyon, Emery County, Utah, could be separated into more than one fraction with each fraction having distinctly different properties. Three methods of separation were attempted: (l) Separation of specific gravity fractions, (2) separation by use of solvents, and (3) chromatographic separation. Properties determined as a means of establishing any differences in the resins were: solubility, softening points, acid numbers, and iodine numbers.

An Investigation Of The Amount And Kinds Of Material Pertaining To Safety Education To Be Found In Social Studies Textbooks, Dorothy D. Osborn Jun 1948

An Investigation Of The Amount And Kinds Of Material Pertaining To Safety Education To Be Found In Social Studies Textbooks, Dorothy D. Osborn

Masters Theses

Chapter I

Introduction

The Problem

In spite of the fact that safety education is acquiring a definitive place in elementary school curricula, there are still many secondary school educators who are indifferent to the need of including work in safety in the already crowded school program. However, our modern mode of living with its increased tempo and its concentration of population has intensified daily hazards to such an extent that the school must consider education for safety as part of its program. Time, effort, and money spent on education of children whose lives are to be taken in adolescence by …

Paragenesis Of The Ores Of Poughkeepsie Gulch, San Juan Mountains, Colorado, Leon T. Silver

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

It is the purpose of this study to supplement the recognized geologic field relations with a laboratory study of the mineral assemblage of the area and its paragenesis. It is hoped that the results may be employed in amplifying the knowledge of the origin of ore bodies in Poughkeepsie Gulch. The work as presented in this thesis consists of a description of the general mineralogy, descriptions and analyses of the ores by mine suites, and conclusions based upon the observed paragenesis. This material is preceded by introductory remarks on the source of data, previous work, and geologic setting.

The Lusignans In England, 1247-1258, Harold S. Snellgrove May 1948

The Lusignans In England, 1247-1258, Harold S. Snellgrove

History ETDs

I do not claim to have collected and incorporated in this essay every available scrap of evidence which relates to Henry III and his half-brothers. Indeed, in the beginning the purpose of this study proposed to be nothing more than a picture, -- a picture of the methods by which a feudal prince rewarded his subjects. As time went on, certain constitutional issues arose. I have tried to point out wherein Henry III violated the charters in rewarding his brothers, but I have not attempted to give a lengthy discussion of this phase of the story. I have, however, reached …

A Study Of Variations In Cosmic Ray Intensity Due To The Shifting Of Isobaric Layers In The Stratosphere, Frederick Herbert Martens

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

This investigation is an attempt to correlate variations in cosmic ray intensity with shifts of the isobaric layers in the stratosphere on the basis of the change in path length traveled by radioactive mesotrans, and in consideration of ordinary mass absorption of the air along the path.

The American Revolution As It Is Revealed In The Patriotic Plays Of The Period, Floyd M. Christ May 1948

The American Revolution As It Is Revealed In The Patriotic Plays Of The Period, Floyd M. Christ

English Language and Literature ETDs

In this work on The American Revolution as it is Revealed in the Patriotic Plays of the Period, I shall deal directly with the plays which were written in behalf of the American cause. I shall present my material, not according to the order of appearance of the plays themselves, but rather according to the sequence of events of the Revolutionary Period, and only those events which are covered by the plays of the period will be discussed in detail. The study as a whole will not be based on a study of the plays as plays but rather as …

Ideas And Aesthetics: An Analysis Of The Concept And Presentation Of Evil In Certain Great Novels Of The Nineteenth Century, Kenneth Lash May 1948

Ideas And Aesthetics: An Analysis Of The Concept And Presentation Of Evil In Certain Great Novels Of The Nineteenth Century, Kenneth Lash

English Language and Literature ETDs

As the title of this paper indicates, I assume the existence of an important relationship between the idea and the aesthetic expression of it. I believe that this relationship takes shape as an influence of content upon form. Certainly this is not a new hypothesis, but I have not yet seen a careful examination of it in connection with the novel. Nor is there, so far as I know, any general agreement upon the extent of this influence.

I have chosen to examine content in the light of its concept of evil. This is not a completely arbitrary choice...I found …

The Sex Factor In Blake's Cosmology, George Victor Mather May 1948

The Sex Factor In Blake's Cosmology, George Victor Mather

English Language and Literature ETDs

This paper makes no pretense of being all-embracing. Rather it follows a subsidiary factor in Blake's thought from its obscure origin to its unique fulfillment. It attempts to uncover in Blake's personal life the causes of his attitude toward sex, to visualize the effect this attitude had on his thought, and to point out the important place that sex occupies in Blake's completed cosmology.

The Portuguese Complimentary Infinitive After Nouns And Adjectives, Peter J. Lunardini May 1948

The Portuguese Complimentary Infinitive After Nouns And Adjectives, Peter J. Lunardini

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

The Portuguese usage of the preposition following verbs has been thoroughly studied by Francisco Fernandes in his Dictionàrio de verbos e regimes. However, the preposition required to supplement a noun or an adjective before a complementary infinitive has been virtually excluded from Portuguese dictionaries. It is the purpose of this thesis to present a study, together with examples, of this important phase of Portuguese syntax.

To obtain this information, thirty-one works of nineteen modern Portuguese and Brazilian authors were carefully examined, and the prepositional usage was recorded. The following general conclusions are based upon approximately 4,000 examples collected.

Shelley's Ideas Of Immortality, James Lewis Lacour May 1948

Shelley's Ideas Of Immortality, James Lewis Lacour

English Language and Literature ETDs

Shelley is generally regarded as a great lyricist, and indeed he was; yet even a superficial exploration of his works will show that he was greatly interested in, and concerned with, religious and philosophical subjects. Few critics, however, have even mentioned the poet as philosopher, much less attempted to understand his varying and, at times, baffling philosophical expressions. This study is an attempt to trace the evolution of Shelley's ideas concerning immortality and to conclude, if possible, his final stand on the subject.

Benito Pérez Galdós And Dramatic Technique, Albert V. Wilson May 1948

Benito Pérez Galdós And Dramatic Technique, Albert V. Wilson

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

Pérez Galdós undoubtedly will be remembered as the greatest novelist of nineteenth century Spain, but if one had asked him his occupation, the response probably would have been "a dramatist." Galdós had dramatic tendencies from the very beginning of his literary career, and his greatest ambition was to write for the theater. While still a student at the Colegio de las Palmas, his first dramatic effort emerged. It was a historical one-act drama in verse entitled Quien mal hace bien no espere. Naturally, manifestations of adolescent romanticism are everywhere evident in this youthful attempt of Galdós, but the play is …

The Carbethoxylation Products Of P-Aminoacetophenone And P-Dimethylaminoacetophenone, Chao-Yuan Chu

Theses and Dissertations

The carbethoxylation product of p-aminoacetophenone with diethyl carbonate by means of sodium amide has been proved to be ethyl p-acetylphenylcarbamate instead of ethyl p-aminobenzoylacetate. Thus the amino group was shown to be more active than the methyl ketonic. group tow ard carbethoxylation. Attempt at further carbethoxylation of this carbamate were unsuccessful.

Synthesis Of 2-Phenyl-2,1,3-Triazole-4-Carboxaldehyde And Some Derivatives, Gene Sumrell May 1948

Synthesis Of 2-Phenyl-2,1,3-Triazole-4-Carboxaldehyde And Some Derivatives, Gene Sumrell

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

It was decided in this problem to prepare 2-phenyl-2,1,3-triazole-4-carboxaldehyde (III) as a starting material by the method suggested by Hann and Hudson and run a number of typical aldehyde reactions with it. The preparation of (III) involved: (1) The hydrolysis of sucrose to form glucose and fructose; (2) conversion of these two sugars to D-glucose phenylosazone (I), by reaction with phenylhydrazine; (3) transformation of (I) to D-glucose phenylosotraizole (II), by the action of hot aqueous copper sulfate; and (4) oxidation of the side chain from (II) with sodium periodate, forming (III).

The reactions selected were: (1) the Grignard reaction; (2) …

Studies Of Increment, Height-Weight, And Moisture Content Of Important Western Kansas Grasses, John Launchbaugh May 1948

Studies Of Increment, Height-Weight, And Moisture Content Of Important Western Kansas Grasses, John Launchbaugh

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

A logical approach to the question of how much forage is taken by livestock would be, it seems, to study first the growth habits of the important species of p:i.sture and range grasses in the areas where they are used. The purpose of this report, therefore, was to study the development of several species of perennial grasses in the mixed prairie of west-central Kamas from near the beginning of the grazing season until the grasses had reached maturity.
