The Respiratory Response To 6.2 Percent Carbon Dioxide And Various Concentration Of Oxygen At A Ground Level Of 5000 Ft. (Av. Bar. 630 Mm Hg), Astrid Lindholm

Biology ETDs

In this study the literature has been reviewed with [the aforementioned] facts in mind. It was of interest to note the lack of agreement among investigators concerning the respiratory response not only in inhaling 100 percent oxygen, but also to breathing gas mixtures containing low oxygen. Very few papers were found in which as systematic respiratory study had been made to determine the variations in ventilation produced by a given concentration of carbon dioxide at various concentrations of oxygen. On a whole, considerable individual difference in respiration was reported and it seemed worthwhile to study carefully a specific acclimatized subject …

Organization And Execution Of A Major Industrial Electrification Project, Robert F. Mccaw

Professional Degree Theses

"All emergencies, especially those created by war, have marshalled the industrial might of nations, among other things. World War II was no exception; in fact, it produced the greatest expansion of industrial facilities in history.

Most all plants in the country underwent some degree of expansion. In certain industries, the experienced workers of existing plants were employed as nuclei for the organization of the gigantic new plants required to produce the arms and equipment necessary to the conduct of a global war.

This thesis pertains to one phase of the design and construction of such an enterprise. This particular phase …

The Preparation Of Zirconium Powder, Herbert S. Kalish

Professional Degree Theses

"The preparation of zirconium powder by several different methods is fully described and evaluated. Most of the methods described are of a rather classical nature and these methods are discussed as taken from their original sources with suggestions for possible streamlining. Flow sheets are provided.

The first series of steps to produce zirconium powder is almost invariably the production of pure zirconium tetrachloride or pure zirconium oxide from the tetrachloride. The processes described include the sodium reduction of zirconium tetrachloride, sodium reduction of the double alkali fluorides, the calcium reduction of zirconium oxide, hydrogen embrittlement and comminution of reduction products. …

The Industrial Growth Of Birmingham, Alabama From 1871 To 1899, William Leroy Dunn

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

It has been the purpose of this thesis to show how the industrial growth of Birmingham, Alabama, transformed this area from an agrarian society to an industrial center of world-wide importance. Until July 1, 1871, the city of Birmingham had only small beginnings east of Elyton. At that time, "King Cotton" was the chief product in the southland and of the Birmingham District. Beginning in 1871, there was a movement for the development of the mineral resources of the South. The coal, iron, and limestone that had lain untouched for ages were brought to the surface and finally recognized as …

Reflection Of Hopi Culture In Hopi Folk Tales, Constance B. Sears Jan 1953

Reflection Of Hopi Culture In Hopi Folk Tales, Constance B. Sears

Anthropology ETDs

It has been well established that the cultural features of a society are reflected in its folk tales. Boas first presented his views on the cultural significance of folk tales in a series of papers on North American Indian mythology (Boas 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8), and he published detailed demonstrations of the possibility of reconstructing the culture of a tribe from its mythology, using Tsimshian (Boas 4) and Kwakiutl (Boas 7) material. His general conclusion is that... in the tales of a people those incidents of everyday life that are of importance to them will appear …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The occurrence of selenium in certain soils of the United States and its detrimental effect upon livestock pastured on or fed forage from these areas has been well established. Selenium poisoning will not be reviewed here as several excellent reviews have been published (1, 2, 3). Studies on the metabolism of selenium by Sac-charomyces cerevisiae have been reported by Potter and Elvehjem (4), Lardy and Moxon (5), and Fels and Cheldelin (6, 7, 8). An attempt has been made in this thesis to repeat and enlarge on some of these studies. While this investigation may contribute information on the selenium …

Antioxidants play a very important p rt in many chemical industries in protecting petroleum products, rubber, foodstuffs, resins, fats, oils, soaps, and a variety of chemicals from atmospheric oxidation during their manufacture, storage, and use. Phenolic compounds comprise one of the important groups of antioxidants and within this group are the hindered phenols, many of which are very efficient oxidation inhibitors. Hindered phenols are monohydric phenols whose two ortho-positions are occupied by tertiary butyl or larger groups thus hindering the phenolic properties of the compound. They are insoluble (132) in aqueous or alcoholic alkali solutions and will not respond to …

The Nature Of Chromatin Changes In Colchicine-Induced Variants In Sorghum, Dale D. Harpstead Jan 1953

The Nature Of Chromatin Changes In Colchicine-Induced Variants In Sorghum, Dale D. Harpstead

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The induction or true breeding variants with unchanged chromosome member in a variety of Sorghum vulgare Pers. was reported by Franske and Rosa (5). These variants resulted from colchicina treatment of seedlings in a variety which was we known to breed true. The authors proposed that variant plants lmay have originated from a haploid chromosome complement formed bysomatic reduction, which was later restored to the diploid condition. Such a cell by virtue of its genetic constitution or its position in the meristomatic region may be able to initiate a s new growing point having homozygous diploid tissue. This proposal in …

Estimating Commercial Expansion From Irrigation Development In The Oahe Unit, John E. Thompson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Commercial activity in an economy that is predominantly agricultual is very sensitive to changes in farming conditions. It is generally agreed by businessmen in agricultural areas that the success of their business operation is largely dependent upon the number and prosperity of farmers in their trade areas. For this reason businessmen often encourage proposals to increase the number of forms in their trade areas and support measures designed to improve the economic position of farmers. In South Dakota, where rainfall is considered a limiting factor in agricultural production, considerable interest has been taken in irrigation as a means for increasing …
