The Occupational Status Of Physical Education Graduates Of Prairie View College From 1942-1952, Ben Arthur Young
All Theses
According to the "belief of many of our administrators, Physical Education is "playing", and it can be done at recess with a teacher appointed to watch over the play period. This was changed by the State Department of Texas, requiring one-fourth unit per semester for graduation from High School. Trained personnel had to be brought in with as many as twelve hours of training to teach Physical Education. Prairie View A. & M. College set up its Physical Education Department requiring thirty-two hours in Physical Education for a major and twenty hours for a minor in the field. Occupations are …

A Beginning Course In Architectural Drawing For Anderson High School, Austin, Texas, George Ellis Emery
All Theses
The school is the special agency set up by society to guide and direct the learning experiences of children of the community. The home, also being an institution for learning, obviously is a major factor in determining the kinds of experiences to which children are exposed in life outside the school.
When educational activities are based upon the needs and interests of those for whom they are planned, generally satisfactory outcome of training experiences can be expected. Youth must acquire suitable understandings, ideals, and attitudes to carry forward work and progress along all fronts of knowledge and activity. The problems …

Considering the viewpoint thus stated, it is felt that the following questions should be studied: What can be done to meet the needs of the elementary school child through the Music Education Program? How may …
On The Treatment Of The Logical Basis Of The Principle Of Mathematical Induction With Some Applications, Theodore C. Smith
On The Treatment Of The Logical Basis Of The Principle Of Mathematical Induction With Some Applications, Theodore C. Smith
All Theses
A criticism which is often made of mathematics as a subject of study is that it involves nothing of observation, experimentation, and induction as the terms are understood in the natural sciences. Whether or not this criticism is just is a debatable question, nevertheless, the work of many investigators who helped to develop mathematical science reflects very clearly a constant use of a great deal of observation, experimentation, and induction, that is the process of deriving a general conclusion from particular cases.
It is worthy to note that observation and experimentation in mathematics do not usually involve costly and complicated …

A Study Techniques For The Improvement Of Written Composition In The O.L. Price School, Taylor, Texas, Lueanna G. Sims
All Theses
Nature of the Problem
Changes in society in this Atomic Age call for reconsideration of the teachers' techniques in teaching composition. Lou LaBrant states:
It was often sufficient that a man should write his own name, and reading requirements were almost equally elementary. In the recent war before acceptance, prospective soldiers had to demonstrate what we're roughly considered "fourth-grade language skills." Those who passed were considered "literate."
College teachers have found that students are not given enough writing experiences to write adequately. Some colleges are offering courses in elementary composition for credit and non-credit. Since one learns to write by …

The Influence Of Vocational Agriculture In Secondary Schools Upon Choice Of Courses By Students Entering Prairie View A&M College, Daniel Norris Herndon

In 1917-18 four departments of vocational agriculture for Negroes were established. By 1939-40 the number of departments had increased to 146. With an enrollment of 4,700 all-day pupils, other enrollments for the year include 722 in day-'unit classes; 944 in part-time classes; and 5,511 in evening classes. Fortunately, the programs and procedures of these organizations are sufficiently varied and flexible to meet many of the conditions described above.
Such organizations are earnestly striving to understand and apply modern psychological conclusions to meet new social needs. Any statement about their …

A Proposed Adult Education Program And Its Needs For The Timpson School And Nearby Communities, Lillie Jones Parker
All Theses
INTRODUCTION
Adult education is a process by which all adults may develop their talents and abilities to the extent that contribute most to the welfare of both themselves and others.
There has always been some form of adult education. The nature of man was such that his environment, both natural and social became an educational force. This informal education was suitable to the simple and informal life of the past. But as society became more highly organized and complex, the gap between the informal education provided by the environment became wider and wider. The changes became so rapid and complex …

The Survival Period Of Salt Treated And-Salt Treated Adrenalectomized Rats Under Normal And Abnormal Conditions, Hubert L. Mitchell , Jr.
All Theses
Guinevere and oscar observed (1944) that heat production is maintained at a normal level in the absence of medullary adrenal tissue, but the effects of loss of the cortical tissue on hear production are not entirely clear. Most reports indicate that in mammals the loss of cortical hormones leads to an early decrease of the metabolic rate. it has been reported by Grollman, Brownell, and Hartman that sodium salt, like other treatments ( cortin, sodium factors, and desoxycorticosterone), maintained adrenalectomized dogs in good condition with a normal metabolic rate (8).
A Study Of The Relationship Of Personality Development And Achievement In Junior High School Physical Education In The City Of San Antonio, Texas, Ada S. Clark
All Theses
The problem of personality maladjustment in school children has interested educators for generations. Before the advent of the testing movement, teachers were compelled to rely on estimates that were generally largely subjective in nature and often even erroneous. The development of standardized. teats of intelligence achievement and personality traits, however, has provided educators more objective measuring instruments and has eliminated much of the subjective element in the evaluation of pupil achievement and personality adjustment.
Williams and Brownell1 define a healthy personality as "not one that is perfect and free from defects, but one that is able, when difficulties occur, …

An Error Analysis Of Written Composition In English And Other Content Subjects Of The 1952-53 Freshman Class, Booker T. Washington High School, Marlin, Texas, Mabel Althea Taylor Tyrone
All Theses
The art of writing unfolds itself to the student as the art of the control of words, and if the student effectively learns to exert this control, he is then better able to express himself and to achieve a greater degree of social acceptance. Sterling A. Leonard feels that both form and effectiveness in expression rise from social needs; therefore he says, "the first step in an effective course in composition should be the child's realization that he needs better written expression."1
In the area of language development the child is usually the product of his home and neighborhood …

Flock craft is now used on furniture, radios, phonographs, jewelry boxes, greeting cards, airplanes and many other things. Flock craft is a significant part of industrial arts education. Industrial arts considers those phases of general education dealing with industry, — its processes, problems, products and procedures. If flock craft is an industrial product, in great demand, used every day about us, and more and more uses in all branches of industry are being discovered every day, then, flock craft should be taught in high school industrial arts courses.
The purpose of the problem is to show how flock craft can …

A Study Of The Personal Health Knowledge Of Fifty Graduate Students Of Prairie View A&M College, Lucy Louise Randle, B.S.
All Theses
Increasing recognition is being given to health as a primary objective of education. The acceptance of health instruction as a necessary function of the school and college, to lead students into more favorable health practices, brings with it an obligation to appraise the effectiveness of the instruction. The measurement of individual knowledge about hygiene, by means of an objective, standardized written test, is a valuable procedure in guiding, evaluating, and improving health education.
The main objective of this study is to determine as near as possible by test, the quantity, and quality of health knowledge of fifty Prairie View graduate …
Mechanism Of Adsorption Of Cations By Silicate Minerals, Milton Glen Armstrong
Mechanism Of Adsorption Of Cations By Silicate Minerals, Milton Glen Armstrong
Theses and Dissertations
Adsorption of cations by clays has been a subject of investigation for many years. Many proposals have been advanced to explain this process of adsorption. Two proposals have been prominent in recent years. The Marshall "charged lattice" theory attributes adsorption of cations by clays to an electrostatic attration of the clay particles for cations. This charge on the clay particles is attributed to various isomorphic substitutions in the lattice of the clay which result in an unbalanced charge on the particle. This isomorphic substitution can take place either in the silicon-oxygen tetrahedra of the silicate structure or with the aluminum …
