Lower Paleozoic Chitinozoans And Scolecodents From North Dakota, Douglass H. Morgan
Lower Paleozoic Chitinozoans And Scolecodents From North Dakota, Douglass H. Morgan
Theses and Dissertations
Chips from cores of the Red River and Stony Mountain Formations of Ordovician age and the Dawson Bay Formation of Devonian age in North Dakota were taken at three-foot intervals, dissolved in acid, and the residue examined for insoluble, pseudochitinous microfossils. Chitinozoa, an extinct order of rhizopod protozoans, were found in abundance along with lesser numbers of scolecodonts, the mouth parts of polychaete worms. Because the study was restricted to the core available at the North Dakota Geological Survey, which rarely included complete sections of the formations, a complete picture of the distribution of these forms must await the more …
Mitral Insufficiency Due To Ruptured Chordae Tendineae, Muttutamby Vannitamby
Mitral Insufficiency Due To Ruptured Chordae Tendineae, Muttutamby Vannitamby
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The clinical features in six patients with mitral insufficiency due to chordae tendineae have been.
The patients in whom the etiology was not known did not become symptomatic till they were past 40, although a murmur had been present for several years. Pulmonary edema or paroxysmal nocturnal dyspnea were the initial symptoms in a number of these patients, preceding the more usual shortness of breath with exertion. The auscultatory and phonocardiographic features are specific. On fluoroscopy readily recognizable paradoxical pulsation of the left atrium was present in some of them. At cardiac catheterization a tall left atrial “v” wave with …
Performance Characteristics Of The Left Ventricle During And Following Induced Extrasystoles, Ergun Fikret Sabar
Performance Characteristics Of The Left Ventricle During And Following Induced Extrasystoles, Ergun Fikret Sabar
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
During the last two decades, since the heart has become a direct target for various surgical procedures for the correction of several abnormalities, interest in understanding its basic regulatory mechanisms and performance has increased considerably. Many experiments have been devised to study cardiac performance, under different circumstances, as an isolated preparation or as an integrated part of a functioning system. The results derived from these investigations not only proved to be important conceptual tools in making many observed phenomena more readily comprehensible, but also provided us with valuable basic principles to treat cardiac patients before and after open heart operations. …
Form And Structure Of Some Of Edwin Arlington Robinson's Tilbury Town Poems, Christina Peckler
Form And Structure Of Some Of Edwin Arlington Robinson's Tilbury Town Poems, Christina Peckler
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
It is the purpose of this study to explore several of Edwin Arlington Robinson’s poems in order to show the poet’s force of language and prosody and to reveal as much as possible his total poetic artistry. The poems are representative of his familiar, shorter Tilbury Town portraits and are taken from his early, middle, and late periods. An honest appraisal will be made to determine the true worth of the poetry, and an attempt will be made to show that Edwin Arlington Robinson deserves a respected position in modern American letters.
Electrocardiogram And Vectorcardiogram In Left Ventricular Hypertrophy Of Valvular Heart Disease, Remzi Nuhoglu
Electrocardiogram And Vectorcardiogram In Left Ventricular Hypertrophy Of Valvular Heart Disease, Remzi Nuhoglu
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Several systems of criteria have been offered for the electrocardiographic diagnosis of left ventricular hypertrophy (1,6,7,8,11,13,14,16). None is completely satisfactory since one system errs in including too many normals and at the other end of the spectrum the other system excludes too many cases of anatomically proven left ventricular hypertrophy. However, a number of patients with proven left ventricular hypertrophy have normal electrocardiograms, or show nonspecific electrocardiographic abnormalities.
It has been suggested that spatial vectrocardiogram, recorded utilizing a corrected lead system, may be more sensitive in detecting left ventricular hypertrophy than routine scalar electrocardiogram (1,3,12,15,21,28,29,30).

During recent years tissue transplantation has been widely used in immunological studies and was instrumental in revealing the biological basis of individuality (20). This individuality as evidenced by tissue graft rejection has been observed in all species studied including man. Two exceptions have been noted, namely, uniovular twins, which will accept tissue from each other permanently (7), and individuals from highly inbred populations which due to genetic similarity, showed higher incidence of permanent graft survival than those from random-bred populations (6, 8, 19).
Several types of tissue transplants have been reported including complete organs such as thyroid, liver, spleen, kidney, …

Literary Study And Its Tradition: A Handbook Guide For Graduate Students In English., James Sebree Loveall
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Every serious student of English, no matter how many years separate him from the M.A. or Ph. D. degrees, must develop to a high degree the essential quality of independence which allows him to pursue investigation in his subject more or less on his own. He cannot continue to bother librarians for every specific source of information which he way need in pursuit of his assigned or self-imposed tasks either in class or out. He should know his way around the area of bibliography--the earlier in his academic career, the better. Surely his first ventures in this direction should not …
Controlled-Potential Polarography In Liquid Ammonia: Inorganic Half-Wavepotentials, Ronald Alan Head
Controlled-Potential Polarography In Liquid Ammonia: Inorganic Half-Wavepotentials, Ronald Alan Head
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The literature of polarography is so vast that any new publication in the field is likely to have an impact comparable to that of a raindrop falling on an ocean. If, however, through some alchemy of the imagination, the raindrop transformed to quicksilver and accompanied by discharge of "lightning"; and the "ocean" be a solution under carefully controlled conditions, then the effect may be measurable--even reproducible--and thus subject to rational interpretation. Since Jaroslav Heyrovsky's pioneer work in the early nineteen twenties, many such drops have fallen, bringing the science and art of polarography to its present highly developed state. Though …

Studies In The Behavior Of Certain Cyclic Olefins Toward Divalent Platinum And Palladium, Ernest Sam Juljian
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The initial program of study for consideration was the extension of cyclooctatetraene complexation to other metals of the transition group. Compounds of (COT) with iron, cobalt, chromium, molybdenum, and tungsten which have been reported in the literature involve carbonyl ligands simultaneously as (COT)M(CO)x with x = 2,3----; only Ag(I) as AgN03 adducts are known. Rhodium (I) is said to form an unstable dimer while ruthenium (I) forms a polymer. (COT)Pt(II) chloride, bromide and iodide have been reported but only the iodide has been studied; only (COT)PdCl2 has been reported recently. It was further conceived that substituted (COT) would …
A Developmental Study Of Temporal Judgment, Faye Florena Hagemeyer
A Developmental Study Of Temporal Judgment, Faye Florena Hagemeyer
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Temporal disorganization is a symptom of disorder manifested by both the aged psychotic and the harmless sanile. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship of temporal judgment, specifically the adult human’s ability to judge the passage of time accurately, to chronological age. The study was suggested by a prominent geriatrician who conjecture as to whether the disability to estimate and to order time effectively was a dysfunction peculiar to senility and its gradual deterioration even in normal human beings in the ability to judge time accurately.
Using a time estimation test requiring judgement of various intervals of …
A Historical Study Of The Berlin Airlift, William Earl Dofflemyer
A Historical Study Of The Berlin Airlift, William Earl Dofflemyer
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Many cities have experienced extended and sometimes catastrophic sieges in their history. Troy was besieged for ten years. Carthage fell to the Romans after three years of resistance. The siege of Paris by Prussia in 1970 and 1877 lasted fire-and-a-half months. The story of the blockade of Berlin, however, and the airlift created to combat this blockade, is perhaps the most curious of all such stories. The eleven-month siege was a determined attempt by Soviet Russia to starve the Berliners into surrender. The defense and the eventual victory over this attempt was provided by the miracle of the Berlin Airlift..
The Use Of Photographs As A Performance Measure Of Personality Rigidity, Edgar Allen Smith
The Use Of Photographs As A Performance Measure Of Personality Rigidity, Edgar Allen Smith
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The literature on rigidity reveals a concentration in two fairly distinct areas: that of problem solving for cognitive rigidity) and motor rigidity. The early investigators felt that assessing these peripheral response mechanism would give a measure of the deeper, central personality mechanism that affects all of behavior. However, such an assumption was highly questionable and based more on analogical reasoning than on empirical evidence. It was Cattel who first pointed out that assuming motor rigidity "extends also through all dissappontement to feel or think perseveratively is a speculation undertaken at one's own risk" (1946, p. 233). Luchins (1951), concerned with …

Studies On The Mechanism Of Action Of The Bioflavonoid Hesperidin Methyl Chalcone In Causing Vascular And Intestinal Smooth Muscle To Relax, Alan Brooks Combs
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
This thesis constitutes a report on a series of studies undertaken on possible mechanisms of action of the bioflavonoid, hesperidin methyl chalcone (HMC), in causing smooth muscle to relax. The term bioflavonoid refers to several compounds that can be extracted from the mesocarp of citrus fruits. They have been the subject of investigation and controversy since 1936. Much of this is covered in a eview by Vogin (1). As mentioned in the review, Szenti-Gyorgyi observed first that crude citrus extracts were more efficient in relieving experimental scurvy than pure extract containing only Vitamin C. The subject of scurvy has been …

Bluebeard's Castle Of Bela Bartok : An Analysis, Dean Harley Finney
Bluebeard's Castle Of Bela Bartok : An Analysis, Dean Harley Finney
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The story of Bluebear has been the center of many theatrical and musical works. From its mystery-shrouded origin, the legend and its principal characters have experienced numerous transformations. Charles Perrault’s tale, the first known published version of the story, served as a basis for all succeeding treatments of the theme, which have handled the various characters differently -- at times stressing Bluebeard, and at other times, the heroine. The theme of the Bluebeard legend has appeared in literature in delightful fairytales and in several dramas, both tragic and comic. Musically, the legend has been employed in numerous operas and as …
Dogmatism And Perceptual Rigidity, Sylvia Joan Joy
Dogmatism And Perceptual Rigidity, Sylvia Joan Joy
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Early efforts to relate personality rigidity and perceptual rigidity have left volumes of data which are somewhat ambiguous and largely inconclusive. These studies have, in general, rested upon two assumptions: (1) that any measure of perceptual rigidity may be related to a measure of personality rigidity, and (2) that the relationship between the two variables is linear. Subsequent data have placed both assumptions in doubt. Several studies indicate that only certain forms of perceptual rigidity may be directly related to personality rigidity (Baer, 1961; Bogen, 1962; Chown, 1959). Other studies have, directly or indirectly, introduced the possibility of a non-linear …
