A Study Of Boy Scout And Aaronic Priesthood Activity (Boys Age Twelve To Fourteen) In Selected Lds Wards, Orval Leonard Nelson

Theses and Dissertations

This study had two main purposes. Its first is to test the theoretical proposition that there is a carry-over into other systems of behavior as a result of group cohesion. For example, as scouting activities increased, Aaronic Priesthood activities increased. And according to the reference group theory, individuals join reference groups to fulfill certain needs, wants, goals, etc. In an active Boy Scout program many of these needs, wants, and goals are satisfied as the boys participate in the activities outlined by the Boy Scouts of America. Furthermore, once these needs are satisfied, change toward conformity tends to carry over …

George Romney And The Michigan Gubernatorial Compaign - 1962, Richard C. Fuller

Theses and Dissertations

Politics in Michigan had been on a low plane for a number of years. The troubles were many and their roots could be found deep in the structure of the state's government.

In April of 1959, the sagging governmental structure gave way to the extent that the state was unable to meet its payroll. The result was the much publicized "Payless Pay Day" which attracted national and international interest.

Seeing that their elected officials were seemingly powerless to correct even the basic flaws in Michigan's government, many of the state's leading business and industrial leaders decided to apply their considerable …

Comparison Of Elastic And Yield Line Design Of Reinforced Concrete Slabs, Abdul Azim Waizy

Open Access Master's Theses

This investigation deals with the comparison of plastic and elastic designs of four different types of reinforced concrete slabs. The types of slabs investigated consist of a flat slab with and without drop panel, a flat plate and a two-way slab. The loads considered for the slabs are 150 psf and 500 psf.

The empirical method of the ACI Code is used in the elastic design of flat slabs with and without drop panels and for flat plates. The two-way slabs are designed elastically according to the Method 2 of the code. In plastic design the moments on which the …

Tanganyika - The Road To Independence, Thomas Methuselah Msaky Jan 1964

Tanganyika - The Road To Independence, Thomas Methuselah Msaky

Open Access Master's Theses

The struggle for independence in Tanganyika calls attention to the main political and social obstacles which had to be overcome before independence was won. The major opposition to independence for Tanganytika came from a few local tribal chiefs who were afraid of losing their status after. Also opposed to independence were those educated civil servants fearing to lose their jobs by joining the National Movement Party, “TANU” (Tanganyika African National union.)

Despite these obstacles presented by tribal chiefs and the educated elite, Tanganyika was able to achieve independence before Kenya and Uganda, its neighbors.

The foremost reason for the emergence …

Open Access Master's Theses

Tristam Burges was born in Rochester, Massachusetts, on February 26 1770. After beginning his educational career rather late in life, he entered Brown University as a sophomore in 1793. A fine student, he was chosen to deliver the class valedictory address in l796. Burges then settled down to practice law in his adopted state.

Through his law practice Burges became well known in Providence and interested in local politics. He took the Federalist Party stand in opposition to Jefferson’s economic policies before the War of 1812. In 1811 he was elected to the State House of Representatives. He served one …

Coastal Orientation Of Cape Cod Bay, Graham Sherwood Giese Jan 1964

Coastal Orientation Of Cape Cod Bay, Graham Sherwood Giese

Open Access Master's Theses

The orientations and changes of orientation of the straightened secondary shorelines of Cape Cod Bay were studied in order to determine whether they were controlled by the direction of approach of the largest waves to reach them or by the direction or amount of the littoral drift.

A comparison of coastal surveys made over the past approximately one hundred years indicated that although short beaches bounded by barriers to littoral drift tend to “face” the direction of minimum drift, longer uninterrupted shorelines tend to “face” the direction of maximum fetch which is interpreted to be the direction of approach of …

Khrushchev's Secret Speech And The Aftermath, Donnalee Rowe Jan 1964

Khrushchev's Secret Speech And The Aftermath, Donnalee Rowe

Honors Theses

Three years after the death of Stalin, Khrushchev presented before the Twentieth Party Congress of the Soviet Union, a secret speech, condemning Stalin and the development of the cult of the individual around him. In so doing, he promised to return to the Marxist-Leninist principles and to collective leadership. I shall try, in this paper, to summarize the various changes that have occurred within the years succeeding the speech. I shall try to show that there has been no basic change in the Soviet system of government, but that some controls have been relaxed and the method of control has …

Saint Sebastian Attended By Irene: An Iconographic Study, Carolyn Kinder Carr Jan 1964

Saint Sebastian Attended By Irene: An Iconographic Study, Carolyn Kinder Carr

Honors Papers

The artists of the Baroque, rejecting the traditional conception of Sebastian, portray the formerly invincible saint as wounded, suffering, no longer victoriously partaking of the fruits of his glorious martyrdom, but being found and cared for by Irene, the widow of the Christian martyr Castulus.

Such a change in iconography involves both a shift of the outward and visible as well as the intrinsic content of the pictorial matter. the significance of this thematic revolution has often been overlooked because it parallels the stylistic developments of the age, which, until recently, have captured more fully the imagination of art historians. …

Social Stratification And Political Behavior: An Emphasis Upon Structural Dynamics, Christopher Bates Doob Jan 1964

Social Stratification And Political Behavior: An Emphasis Upon Structural Dynamics, Christopher Bates Doob

Honors Papers

The interrelationship of social stratification factors (Social stratification is the relative position of ranks, and their distribution found within a society.) and political institutions is a frequent problem of interest to social scientists. In studies of the relationship between political behavior and social stratification, there are numerous analyses of location or rank. in the stratification system and their effects on political behavior. There also are studies on the relationship between social mobility, status crystallization, (Social mobility for the purposes of this study concerns the comparative social rank between a father and his son.) and political behavior. The interaction between mobility, …

Integration And Consensus: A Tentative Exploration, Kent Warren Smith Jan 1964

Integration And Consensus: A Tentative Exploration, Kent Warren Smith

Honors Papers

The dimensions of the topic at hand are of a scope known on occasion to induce giddiness of mind and delusions of omniscience among those who treat with such words as consensus and "integration." Let us be warned; recognition of danger is the first stage of wisdom. It is necessary to severely limit our purview and to temper our aspirations. Established knowledge in this complex and elusive area of concern is scanty. Firm data are perhaps lass conspicuous than firm opinions. Ideological convictions often are easier to come by than precise and valid evidence. The immediate moral is to expect …

The Legal Powers Of Town Councils In Rhode Island, Stephen Aronson

Open Access Master's Theses

The local governing bodies in Rhode Island are called town councils and are empowered to act as agents of the State in various municipal matters affecting their respective communities. This study surveys the powers of these agencies and attempts to determine the answers to the following four questions:

1. What are the sources of legal powers granted to local town councils by the state and how extensive are these powers?

2. What applicability, if any, does the separation of powers theory have in Rhode Island local government?

3. What legal factors distinguish the president of the town council from other …

Counseling Role Perceptions Of United States Navy Chaplains, Thomas Barclay Uber

Open Access Master's Theses

This study is an exploration of the perception of counselor role held by navy chaplains. The size of the Navy, its commitments as a power for peace, its concern for the individual as essential to the defense framework all impinge directly or indirectly upon the chaplain as counselor. How he views his role in the light of recent developments in psychological research and contemporary theories of psychotherapy is of utmost importance to the navy in terms of effective work with its personnel and its emphasis upon character and leadership education.

Some of the dynamic factors revelent to the chaplain’s role …
