Active Brazing Of Single Crystal Al2o3 To Kovar Alloy With Agcuzr Filler Metal, Anthony M. Mcmaster

Mechanical Engineering ETDs

Brazing provides high strength and hermetic joining between metal, ceramic, and composite materials. Origins of the brazing process trace back to 3000BC, yet the technique continues to maintain relevance and demand across aerospace, medical, electronic, optical, and mechanical engineering. Here, single crystal Al2O3 (sapphire) was joined to Kovar in a single step via an AgCuZr active braze filler metal. The microstructure of the completed joint was investigating using microscopy and spectroscopy techniques. A unique braze chamber, paired with an optically clear top substrate (sapphire), allowed further investigation into the dynamics of the active braze process via in situ video monitoring. …

Improving Human Visual Search: Enhancing Lung Cancer Nodule Detection In Medical Images, Christopher Khajira May 2026

Improving Human Visual Search: Enhancing Lung Cancer Nodule Detection In Medical Images, Christopher Khajira

Masters Theses

Human visual search involves the identification of relevant signals within information-rich environments, which is a fundamental problem in visual perception. While detection accuracy and response time are commonly used to evaluate performance in visual search, these measures do not reveal the underlying cognitive and computational structure that produces observable behavior. A key challenge lies in distinguishing between competing processing architectures, particularly in complex visual domains where different models can produce similar behavioral outcomes. This study addresses this challenge by developing a computational experimental framework for analyzing visual search behavior using System Factorial Technology (SFT). The experimental framework integrates naturalistic medical …

A Comparison Of The Effectiveness Of Dna Repair Kits In The Restoration Of Str Profiles, Katya Sandoval May 2026

A Comparison Of The Effectiveness Of Dna Repair Kits In The Restoration Of Str Profiles, Katya Sandoval

Honors Theses

DNA analysis is heavily relied upon in forensic analyses. It can be expected that certain forensically relevant samples — i.e. those recovered from a crime scene, and which have been outside of the body and exposed to environmental conditions— will have undergone some form of damage or degradation. This causes the loss of important information. The purpose of this research was to compare how effectively two commercial DNA repair kits, PreCR® Repair Mix and Restorase® DNA Polymerase, were able to restore STR profiles in damaged samples. The experiments in this study were conducted using DNA extracted from human blood. Samples …

Evaluating The Effectiveness Of A Nurse-Initiated Post-Discharge Phone Call In The Prevention Of Hospital Readmissions For Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, Sierra Kane May 2026

Evaluating The Effectiveness Of A Nurse-Initiated Post-Discharge Phone Call In The Prevention Of Hospital Readmissions For Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, Sierra Kane

Doctoral Projects

Background: Hospital readmissions are widely recognized as a key metric of quality care, reinforced by Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) incentive programs (U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, 2025). Despite these incentives, achieving a meaningful reduction of readmissions remains a challenge, especially for chronic conditions such as type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), where readmission is fueled by gaps in medication management, patient confidence in symptom management, and access to timely follow-up care. Purpose: Evaluate the impact of a nurse-initiated post-discharge telephone outreach, conducted at 48 hours, by the outpatient endocrinology clinic, on 7- and 30-day readmission rates for …

Un|Veiling Walls, Olivia F. Aratea May 2026

Un|Veiling Walls, Olivia F. Aratea

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

This thesis explores how trauma-informed design principles can be integrated into Kennesaw State University’s Marietta Campus to promote psychological safety, emotional resilience, and reduction of trauma triggers for survivors of sexual assault. While trauma-informed approaches have been implemented in healthcare and counseling, their application within academic architecture remains limited. This gap is important to consider given the rising rates of sexual assault, which have increased 62.5% since 2020. Current data shows that four in five women (81%) and two in five men (43%) experience sexual assault in their lifetime, specifically noting that college-aged women are three times more likely to …

From Sprawl To System: Reframing Suburban Thresholds For Density And Social Connectivity, Quincy A. Smith May 2026

From Sprawl To System: Reframing Suburban Thresholds For Density And Social Connectivity, Quincy A. Smith

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

Suburban form is a fragmented and low-density system of sprawling divisions which prevents social connection, carrying a particularly adverse effect for low-income families that cannot offset these attributes with economic bandages. My thesis asks how suburban elements can be implemented at the urban and architectural scale to create an accessible and connected system which results in both individual expression and communal opportunity. More specifically, this thesis aims to translate the thresholds of prototypical suburban typologies into a structural and circulatory framework.

Stan Allen’s field condition concept is explored for the urban level research methodology, introducing repetition and the grid to …

Skill Yard, Shannon Jones May 2026

Skill Yard, Shannon Jones

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

Juvenile crime is rising in many U.S. communities, amplifying stress, anxiety, and safety concerns for teens—especially in high-crime neighborhoods where supportive spaces are scarce. This thesis examines whether environmental design practices in teen-focused third spaces—specifically lighting, materials, and restorative views—can measurably reduce stress, anxiety, and violence among youth. Grounded in environmental sociology, trauma-informed design, and biophilic theory, this study centers on creative third-space design that locates maker spaces for cooking, coding, woodworking, welding, and ceramics within a calm common area and an outdoor setting.

The proposed design integrates skill studios, creative labs, and maker spaces connected to shared commons and …

This thesis aims to address the urgent need for adaptable, socially responsive housing in Sapporo, Hokkaido. The area currently faces a crisis in rapidly aging populations, youth out-migration, housing insecurity, and high rates of domestic violence. These problems are intensified by economic strain, harsh winter conditions, and periods when cultural stigma limits access to safety and community support. As it stands, current housing systems cannot evolve with the rapidly shifting demographics and social needs of the city.

Confront these challenges. The thesis proposes a megastructure-framework grounded in the metabolism movement and the works of Metabolist architects such as Fumihiko Maki, …

The Effects Of Mental Health Advertising On Brand And Product Perception, Faith L. Gideon May 2026

The Effects Of Mental Health Advertising On Brand And Product Perception, Faith L. Gideon

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Previous research has demonstrated that framing effects, influencer sponsorships, and brand campaigns significantly influence consumer behavior and, consequently, company profitability. Over the last few decades, many companies have aligned themselves with various social justice issues, including mental health advocacy. To date, little work has explored what effect such alignment might have on brand perception or consumer behavior. The aim of this study is to explore how mental health advertising influences these variables, taking brand familiarity into account. Participants rated brand authenticity, purchase intent, and willingness to pay premium prices for products after learning about campaigns from familiar or unfamiliar brands …

A Quantitative Critical Analysis Of Comprehensive Education Plan Effects As Implemented Under Title 5 In California Community Colleges, Nicole Jones May 2026

A Quantitative Critical Analysis Of Comprehensive Education Plan Effects As Implemented Under Title 5 In California Community Colleges, Nicole Jones

Dissertations

California Code of Regulations, Title 5, is the policy and regulatory guide of the California Community Colleges. Sections of Title 5 policy govern the implementation of programs and services at these colleges. It provides protection for colleges and specifies student entitlements under the law. The mission of the California Community Colleges is to serve as an open-access point, providing students with services and instruction. Access barriers to services like counseling can delay goal attainment, increase cost of attendance and time to completion, and result in lower successful retention or persistence rates. Additionally, resource allocation, Title 5 Section 59200 regulations (the …

Panorama, Qian Shen May 2026

Panorama, Qian Shen

MFA in Visual Art

This thesis examines the uncanny, bodily, grotesque, and metamorphic states of beings that exist between human and non-human forms. In my sculptural practice, I approach the body not as a fixed or self-contained object, but as a fluid, unstable, and continuously transforming condition. Working primarily with wool, foam, silicone, wax, latex, and metal, I use material interaction, fleshy quality, gravity, and open-ended processes to generate forms that appear unresolved, bodily, and in the middle of becoming. These sculptures often suggest skin, organs, wounds, hair, membranes, or other bodily elements, yet they resist clear identification and remain suspended between attraction and …

“The New Normal”: California’S Escalating Wildfire Crisis, Alexandra Vasquez

Student Theses 2015-Present

This paper addresses the current state of California's wildfire epidemic and how the increasing effects of climate change have worsened the fires, harming residents' health and the state's economy. The wildfires are shaped by factors such as climate change, land-use choices, and policy designs. California wildfires have worsened substantially in the 21st century, with the worst burns in the 2020 season setting a record of 4.2 to 4.5 million acres destroyed. Given current policies and the administration's disinterest in combating climate change, understanding wildfire history and data is essential to improving California's wildfire resilience, creating sustainable land management practices, and …

Green Building Certification And Global Warming: Between Environmental Performance And Greenwashing, Marcel Michalak

Student Theses 2015-Present

This paper addresses the role of green building certifications in addressing global warming. The growing trend of pursuing certificates, such as LEED or BREEAM, can be perceived as a great symbol of resilience and desire to improve the quality of our environment. Unfortunately, in the majority of cases, developers or companies use sustainable labels more as a marketing tool than a real commitment to environmental effectiveness. This paper explores whether green building certifications effectively reduce global warming and how they may serve as tools for greenwashing. Chapter One lays the foundation for why green building certifications exist and why they …

Mismatch Negativity (Mmn) And Neurodevelopmental Outcomes In Children Born Preterm, Aidee León Lúa May 2026

Mismatch Negativity (Mmn) And Neurodevelopmental Outcomes In Children Born Preterm, Aidee León Lúa

Theses - ALL

Premature birth is a leading factor contributing to neurodevelopmental disorders, including autism and cognitive disabilities. Early detection measures can help children access services earlier, even before behavioral traits manifest. Event-related potentials (ERPs), measured though electroencephalography (EEG), are objective and non-invasive methods to study brain activity in children born preterm. The mismatch negativity (MMN), measured by the difference in neural response to alternating frequent and rare stimuli, has been associated with cognitive abilities in preterm children, but its relation to autistic traits remains underexplored. The present study examined whether speech evoked MMN amplitude and latency in children born preterm between 5 …
