Through A Pedagogy Of Play: Kindergarten Teachers' Professional Identity, Self-Efficacy, And Well-Being, Jennifer L. Berube
Through A Pedagogy Of Play: Kindergarten Teachers' Professional Identity, Self-Efficacy, And Well-Being, Jennifer L. Berube
Educational Studies Dissertations
Abstract
This convergent parallel mixed methods study examined how kindergarten teachers who implement a play-based pedagogy describe its influence on their professional identity, self-efficacy, and well-being. Kindergarten represents a critical educational juncture where tensions between developmental practice and academic acceleration are most pronounced, yet existing research has not adequately examined how pedagogical approaches affect the teachers who implement them. While extensive research documents the benefits of play-based learning for children’s development, the experiences of the teachers who facilitate that learning remain largely unexamined. This study addressed that gap through three integrated frameworks: Self-Determination Theory, Seligman’s model of well-being encompassing positive …

Educated Sons And Evolving Traditions: A Qualitative Exploration Of Male Family Roles, Inheritance Customs And Cultural Identity In Matrilineal Meghalaya., Boby John
Educational Studies Dissertations
Abstract
This study examines how increased access to higher education among Khasi boys reshapes family roles, inheritance customs, and cultural identity within the matrilineal society of Meghalaya, India. While matriliny has often been portrayed either as empowering women or disadvantaging men, limited scholarship has explored how access to higher education interacts with gendered inheritance structures and moral responsibility within such systems. This research addresses that gap by investigating how educated sons, youngest daughters (Ka Khadduh), and elders experience continuity and change in contemporary Khasi families.
Guided by Cultural Capital Theory, Social Role Theory, and Cultural Modernization Theory, the study employed …
Black Excellence By Design: A Critical Framework For Transforming K–12 Education, Darnell T. Williams
Black Excellence By Design: A Critical Framework For Transforming K–12 Education, Darnell T. Williams
Educational Studies Dissertations
This dissertation examines Black Excellence as a historically grounded, culturally situated, and politically consequential construct in K–12 education. Using constructivist grounded theory and a critical analytic lens informed by Black Feminist Thought, BlackCrit, Critical Race Theory, and Decolonial Theory, this study examines how Black Excellence is defined, enacted, and protected by Black educators, school leaders, and district-level administrators working within racially stratified and ableist educational systems. Drawing on in-depth interviews and constant comparative analysis, the findings conceptualize Black Excellence not merely as academic achievement, but as a relational, cultural, and political practice sustained through what this study theorizes as Protective …
Student-College Match And Retention For Students With Disabilities, Robert Cohen
Student-College Match And Retention For Students With Disabilities, Robert Cohen
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Abstract
Outcomes of the student-college matching process have been shown to influence important postsecondary outcomes, including persistence, retention, and degree attainment. However, limited research has examined how matching outcomes operate for students with disabilities. This dissertation investigates student-college matching patterns for students with disabilities and compares the results with matching quality for students without disabilities. This study also examines the relationship between matching outcomes (undermatch, equal match, and overmatch) and first-year retention. Particular attention is focused on the nature of these relationships and any differences by disability status. Data is used from the Beginning Postsecondary Students (BPS:12-17), and filtered to …

Harnessing Mechanobiology Of Resident Stem Cells To Refine Cell Based Therapeutics, Dakota R. Kamm
WUSM Theses and Dissertations – All Programs
Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are resident cells residing with many adult tissues such as adipose tissue and bone marrow that have the potency for multiple lineage differentiation as well as the capacity to secrete a litany of beneficial factors to maintain homeostasis and promote tissue repair. Since 1995, MSCs have been used therapeutically to treat a variety of conditions from osteoarthritis to heart disease to muscle pathologies. Great leaps have been made in improving MSC-based therapies through optimization of culture methods and select enrichment of cellular subpopulations. More recently, the physical microenvironment of tissue in vivo and culture conditions in …
Improving The Assessment And Treatment Of People With Low Back Pain, Kayla Krueger
Improving The Assessment And Treatment Of People With Low Back Pain, Kayla Krueger
WUSM Theses and Dissertations – All Programs
Low back pain (LBP) is a significant and continually growing public health problem. While some people recover from an initial episode, a proportion will develop chronic or recurrent LBP that limits their ability to perform daily functional activities. The variable and often function-limiting course of LBP underscores the clear need for improved methods of assessment and treatment. One way to improve the assessment and treatment of LBP is to develop a more comprehensive understanding of factors that contribute to LBP. In this dissertation, we investigated two categories of factors that may contribute to a person’s LBP: (1) spinal movement impairments …

Background: Recent reports indicated that medication errors contributed to 10% of preventable harm among hospitalized patients with over half occurring during the administration stage. Despite emerging research using EHR data to examine care processes and clinical outcomes, limited studies have integrated objective and subjective nursing staffing measures to evaluate how nursing staffing levels could be associated with delays in care delivery.
Method: A parallel convergent mixed-methods study was conducted in four adult medical-surgical units at a Midwestern Academic Medical Center from January 1 – March 31, 2025. Quantitative data of insulin and IV antibiotic administration records, laboratory results, and nurse …
A Phenomenological Study Of Elementary Educators’ Experiences Identifying And Responding To Student Asocial Evidence Associated With School Violence Risk, Karen Elizabeth Mcdavitt
A Phenomenological Study Of Elementary Educators’ Experiences Identifying And Responding To Student Asocial Evidence Associated With School Violence Risk, Karen Elizabeth Mcdavitt
Educational Studies Dissertations
The phenomenon of school shootings is a frightening reality for parents, teachers, and students. Schools should be safe spaces for children; instead, classrooms are spaces in which acts of horrific violence in classrooms occur far too often. Perpetrators of school violence almost always leave a destructive path of warning signs. These warning signs are often exhibited through asocial evidence identifiable in their early years. This phenomenological study examined ways that elementary educators have identified and intervened with students exhibiting asocial evidence associated with school violence risk. An online survey collected qualitative and quantitative data from forty-four elementary educators. Eight of …

Educational Studies Dissertations
This mixed methods study examined the effectiveness and equity of vocational high school admissions in Massachusetts, focusing on an oversubscribed regional vocational high school and its largest urban comprehensive feeder school. Although vocational schools were created to provide equitable, high‑quality career and technical education, and to prepare students for skilled employment, most vocational students now pursue postsecondary academic pathways, contributing to shortages in the trades. At the same time, traditional admissions criteria—focused on grades, attendance, and behavior—have historically limited access for English Learners, students with disabilities, low‑income students, and students of color. The purpose of this study was to investigate …
From Anxiety To Resilience: A Case Study Of Female-Identifying Middle School Students At A Math Summer Camp, Elizabeth Teixeira
From Anxiety To Resilience: A Case Study Of Female-Identifying Middle School Students At A Math Summer Camp, Elizabeth Teixeira
Educational Studies Dissertations
Mathematics anxiety, defined as a fear that hampers engagement in mathematical tasks (Richardson & Suinn, 1972), affects nearly 50% of students (Johnston-Wilder et al., 2014) and has a disproportionate impact on female students (Devine et al., 2018; Stoet et al., 2016). Math anxiety is often treated in the research literature as a relatively stable trait. This perspective may not fully capture how anxiety manifests in specific moments of mathematical engagement or account for the role of environmental conditions that can both precipitate and mitigate anxious responses. In response to these gaps, this study investigates how mathematics anxiety manifests in …

Nurtured Meaning: A Hermeneutic Phenomenological Study Of The Tree Of Life In Contemporary Women's Art, Christina A. Defilipp
Educational Studies Dissertations
The Tree of Life has historically flourished across cultures as an archetypal image of interconnection, regeneration, and continuity. In the Anthropocene, however, its symbolic vitality is reframed by the realities of environmental crisis. This study investigates how contemporary women artists across the globe sustain and reinterpret the Tree of Life’s meaning to express themes of ecological, spiritual, and cultural relevance. Employing a qualitative design grounded in hermeneutic phenomenology, the study analyzes publicly available artworks and published reflections, including interviews, catalog essays, and artist statements. A purposive sample of twenty women artists from diverse cultural traditions forms the dataset, each represented …
"Free To Fall": Milton's Satan And The Trial Of Discernment, Mae Legare
"Free To Fall": Milton's Satan And The Trial Of Discernment, Mae Legare
English Honors Theses
William Blake once wrote, "Milton was of the Devil's party without knowing it," reasoning a deep-seated alignment with evil that only becomes illuminated in Satan's vibrantly humanized character. By analyzing Milton's earlier political prose, Areopagitica and The Tenure of Kings and Magistrates, alongside Satan's monologues in Paradise Lost, the author and his fallen characters' voices begin to sound synonymous. They are enraged by similar injustices and failures of political institutions, and they employ very similar methods of argumentation and political rhetoric. Blake was correct, in a sense, that Milton was "of the Devil's party," but I argue that …
The “Fallen Woman” Reconsidered: Inner And Outer Redemption In Victorian Literature, Caroline Kramer
The “Fallen Woman” Reconsidered: Inner And Outer Redemption In Victorian Literature, Caroline Kramer
English Honors Theses
This undergraduate thesis critically examines three female protagonists situated within the “fallen woman” character archetype of Victorian literature through a lens of redemption: Ruth Hilton in Ruth by Elizabeth Gaskell (1853), Mercy Merrick in The New Magdalen by Wilkie Collins (1873), and Tess Durbeyfield in Tess of the d’Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy (1891). While nineteenth-century readers may have expected that these women needed to undergo a moral transformation based on circumstances of their past, this thesis argues that none of them fundamentally require “redemption” according to any of the word’s typical definitions; rather, the question posed regards the modes through …

Oxidized Lipids Are Inflammatory Danger Signals. The Hydrolytic Enzyme Carboxylesterase 1 Regulates Their Metabolic Fate, Thereby Shaping Macrophage Phenotype., Oluwabori Adekanye
Theses and Dissertations
Macrophages originate from hematopoietic progenitors they are immune cells, part of innate immunity. They patrol tissues to identify damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs) and pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) from microorganisms. Macrophage pattern recognition receptors (PRRs) detect these signals, and respond by secreting lipid mediators, cytokines, and chemokines, thereby initiating the inflammatory response. Carboxylesterases (CES) belong to the α/β-hydrolase fold family of proteins and catalyze the hydrolysis of ester-containing substrates into alcohols and carboxylic acids. CES1 is one of the six CES identified in the human genome. They are localized in the endoplasmic reticulum lumen and cytosol of cells, primarily expressed in …
Comparative Analysis Of Standard Building Materials In Earth-Sheltered Architecture, Austin Greifenkamp
Comparative Analysis Of Standard Building Materials In Earth-Sheltered Architecture, Austin Greifenkamp
Theses
In an industry that significantly contributes to the ever-increasing environmental destruction witnessed globally, architects are responsible for ensuring human comfort without sacrificing environmental health. Earth-sheltering, an architectural design technique that uses earth to partially or fully cover a building, results in reduced operational energy consumption but introduces structural components to increased loads and higher levels of humidity. Using the material properties and life cycle data of wood, concrete, and steel, this study analyzes the viability of each material in a below-grade environment and the resulting embodied impact of a typical earth-sheltered structure. To align the results of this research with …

What Impact Might The Coatt Model Have On Those Recovering From Spiritual Disconnect? A Community Engagement Project, Fiona A. Doyle
What Impact Might The Coatt Model Have On Those Recovering From Spiritual Disconnect? A Community Engagement Project, Fiona A. Doyle
Expressive Therapies Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to determine whether or not the CoActive Therapeutic Theater (CoATT Model) may be applicable to individuals that identify as in active recovery from spiritual disconnect. The importance of spirituality as a factor in mental health counseling has been identified repeatedly, and while there is currently some literature exploring the intersection of the use of drama therapy to treat spiritual concerns, there is a need for a larger body of research to be generated in service of understanding how drama therapy may be of service to those who are recovering from a spiritual disconnect. As …

Conceptualizing Professional Identity Development In Art Therapy Supervision With Post-Graduate Art Therapists Who Are Pre-Licensed, Christine S. Atkinson
Expressive Therapies Dissertations
This study explored how art therapy supervisors conceptualize professional identity development (PID) in supervision with postgraduate art therapists who were pre-licensed. There was limited empirical research on how art therapy supervisors understood and support PID within art therapy supervision, particularly during the transitional period between graduate training and professional licensure. This study addressed the research question: How do art therapy supervisors conceptualize PID in supervision with postgraduate art therapists who are pre-licensed?
Fourteen art therapy supervisors participated in the study (86% female; 14% non-binary), ranging in age from 25 to over 65 years old. All participants identified their race or …
Photovoice As A Resilience Tool For Helping Professionals In Complex Trauma Work, Pamela Lie
Photovoice As A Resilience Tool For Helping Professionals In Complex Trauma Work, Pamela Lie
Expressive Therapies Dissertations
Helping professionals (HPs) working with complex trauma operate in emotionally demanding environments that place them at increased risk of burnout, secondary traumatic stress, and compassion fatigue. Resilience has therefore been identified as an important resource for sustaining well-being and effective practice. While photovoice has shown potential as a participatory approach for fostering resilience across diverse populations, its application among HPs engaged in complex trauma work, particularly within Asian contexts, remains limited. This study examined how seven HPs engaged in complex trauma work from a single organization in Singapore experienced and perceived photovoice as a resilience-building tool. The study employed a …
“Ain’T That Love?”: How Morrison Writes Against Stereotypes Of Black Mothers, Charlotte G. Collins
“Ain’T That Love?”: How Morrison Writes Against Stereotypes Of Black Mothers, Charlotte G. Collins
English Honors Theses
This thesis argues that Toni Morrison uses violent motherhood to add nuance to and challenge negative stereotypes of Black women. The first chapter investigates neglectful and violent mothers, examining Polly Breedlove from The Bluest Eye and Eva Peace from Sula. This chapter explores how these mothers use their cruelty as a way of claiming their title as head of the household, which they have long been denied due to their intersecting identities as Black women. The second chapter argues that Sethe from Beloved and Eva Peace from Sula murder their children as a way of reclaiming the ability to make …
Patterns Of Molecular Evolution Driving Reproductive And Genomic Processes In Sauropsids, Taylor Green
Patterns Of Molecular Evolution Driving Reproductive And Genomic Processes In Sauropsids, Taylor Green
Theses and Dissertations
Sexual reproduction is an important driver of genetic diversity and speciation through such forces as selection, mutation, and drift. Sauropsids are an appropriate clade to study shared molecular drivers of sexual and genomic evolution due to their genome architecture, sex determination mechanism (SDM) plasticity, and large syntenous genomic regions. Using comparative phylogenetic methods, I identify predictable patterns of selection in meiotic recombination genes and clade-specific drivers of recombination rate evolution. Then, leveraging whole genome sequencing, I demonstrate that American alligator genomes are characterized by an ancient loss of genetic diversity driven by drift and historic inbreeding. I also generate a …
Mllt1 Is Required To Maintain B-Lymphopoiesis, Janani Prakash
Mllt1 Is Required To Maintain B-Lymphopoiesis, Janani Prakash
Dissertations
MLLT1 (also named ENL) is an epigenetic reader protein that binds to crotonylated or acetylated lysine residues of histone 3 through its N-terminal YEATS domain. Positive and negative regulatory complexes compete for binding to C-terminal MLLT1, and promote transcription elongation (SEC, Super elongation complex; DOT1L) or transcriptional repression (PRC1, Polycomb repressive complex 1). MLLT1 was initially identified as a chromosomal translocation partner to MLL(KMT2A) in a subset of MLL-rearranged leukemias. MLL-ENL fusion protein causes both lymphoid (predominantly B-ALL) and mixed lineage leukemias. MLLT1 has been implicated in leukemic stem cell survival in MLL-rearranged cell lines but its role in normal …

Neurodiversity Among Nurses: Consequences For Wellbeing And Burnout, Megan Pohlmann
Neurodiversity Among Nurses: Consequences For Wellbeing And Burnout, Megan Pohlmann
WUSM Theses and Dissertations – All Programs
Background/Introduction – Current research highlights three critical aspects of nurse wellbeing: the subjective personal perspective, multifaceted complexity, and variation across individuals. A particular gap in past research is a lack of understanding of how neurodivergence may impact nurses’ workplace wellbeing. Neurodiversity is the variation in human minds and neurocognitive functioning, and neurodivergence is the divergence from what society would consider the norm. Like wellbeing, it is difficult to capture, recognize, and define, which causes confusion among neurodivergent individuals and employers alike. With up to 20% of individuals displaying neurodivergent traits in the workplace, it is important to recognize that those …
Degrees Of Access: The Role Of Family Education In Applying To Graduate School, Emma Tweed
Degrees Of Access: The Role Of Family Education In Applying To Graduate School, Emma Tweed
Math and Computer Science Honors Theses
Access to graduate education in the United States remains heavily stratified by structural, financial, and informational barriers. While undergraduate first-generation student outcomes are widely studied, fewer structural analyses examine how graduate-level “educational inheritance” shapes prospective applicants' navigational capital, particularly within competitive STEM fields like mathematics. Drawing upon theories of social capital and the “hidden curriculum,” this study investigates the relationship between an individual's knowledge of the graduate school application process and the highest level of education attained by an immediate family member.
Using the Knowledge-GAP survey instrument funded by the National Science Foundation, data were collected from a diverse sample …
