Generative Ai As Artificial Audience, Chrystina Scoglietti Apr 2026

Generative Ai As Artificial Audience, Chrystina Scoglietti

Distinguished Student Scholarship Collection

This paper examines generative artificial intelligence as a distinct communicative development that reshapes rhetorical practice and composition pedagogy. Situating generative AI within a historical framework of communicative revolutions—including primary orality, literacy, and secondary (digital) orality—the paper argues that generative AI constitutes a new form of literacy rather than a mere extension of digital media. By producing near‑human language and creative output in direct response to user input, generative AI functions not only as a compositional tool but also as an artificial audience to which rhetoric must be tailored. The analysis explores how this shift challenges traditional assumptions about audience, persuasion, …

The Limitations Of Static Market Analysis In Addressing Innovation-Related Anticompetitive Conduct: A Comparative Study Of U.S., Eu, And Japanese Antitrust Law, Wuyi Yang

LL.M. Essays & Theses

From the antitrust law of both the US and Japan, one question has always been in my mind – why is analysis still fixated on immediate observable, superficial facts like the level of cost and quality? For purposes of practice – neither services nor products can be entirely represented by these dimensions alone. More and more creativity, more choice, and the way in which current market conditions will change our lives for good in the future – these are all important issues. However, these elements are all part and parcel of the ongoing process of competition and have effects that …

Enhancing Search Systems With Large Language Models, Zhiyuan Peng Apr 2026

Enhancing Search Systems With Large Language Models, Zhiyuan Peng

Engineering Ph.D. Theses

Search systems traditionally balance efficiency and effectiveness by decomposing the retrieval process into a pipeline of query understanding, retrieval, and reranking to surface relevant documents. The rapid progress of large language models (LLMs) is reshaping this paradigm: modern systems increasingly aim not only to retrieve information but to produce direct answers, while remaining reliable, efficient, and scalable. This dissertation, Enhancing Search Systems with Large Language Models, studies how LLMs can improve each stage of the search stack and how new evaluation resources and efficiency measures are needed to deploy LLM-powered search in practice.

First, for query understanding in large-scale e-commerce …

Loss Of Sarm1 Affects Myelin Uptake And Clearance In Macrophages, Grace J. Bergeron Apr 2026

Loss Of Sarm1 Affects Myelin Uptake And Clearance In Macrophages, Grace J. Bergeron

Senior Theses

Clearance of myelin debris is an essential step in nerve regeneration after injury in both the central nervous system (CNS) and peripheral nervous system (PNS), a process that is primarily carried out by macrophages. Failure to phagocytose and clear myelin can prolong inflammation and impair recovery. Sterile alpha and TIR motif-containing protein 1 (SARM1) is well researched as a regulator of axonal degeneration, yet its role in macrophages is still unclear. This study investigates how sarm1 deletion and cytokine signaling influence macrophage uptake and clearance of CNS and PNS myelin in vitro. Splenic macrophages isolated from wild-type (WT) and sarm1 …

This project investigates how the program has evolved in …

A Guide To Environmentally Sustainable Filmmaking In South Carolina, Christina Vera Dobrowolski Apr 2026

A Guide To Environmentally Sustainable Filmmaking In South Carolina, Christina Vera Dobrowolski

Senior Theses

The entertainment industry has a massive environmental impact. This information is not new in the filmmaking world, as multiple mainstream efforts exist to curb the material-intensive production of live action films and TV. One of these efforts is the use of voluntary sustainable guidelines, which serve as tools that outline sustainable best practices and resources that can help achieve them. However, current guidelines often lack practicality— focusing more on altruism rather than core economic factors that ultimately drive filmmaking. This project aims to address that gap for filmmakers in South Carolina by offering a website featuring attainable, state-specific resources for …

We're All Ramblers, Here: American National Identity As Articulated Through The Sounds And Stories Of Bluegrass Music, Greyson M. Sherman Apr 2026

We're All Ramblers, Here: American National Identity As Articulated Through The Sounds And Stories Of Bluegrass Music, Greyson M. Sherman

Senior Theses

This creative thesis argues that bluegrass music, through its multicultural origins and its central "Rambler" archetype, articulates a distinctly American negotiation between freedom and rootedness — one that extends far beyond the genre's narrow popular image. Drawing on musicological scholarship and cultural history, the paper first recovers bluegrass's suppressed origins in the convergence of West African, Anglo- Celtic, and broader European traditions, complicating narratives that position the genre as exclusively white and Appalachian. It then introduces the Rambler — the restless, longing figure who haunts bluegrass lyrically and structurally — as both a product of that history and a metaphorical …

Exploring Synthesized Cbd Derivatives: Implications Of Therapeutic Strategies For Neuroinflammation, Josephine Mosser Apr 2026

Exploring Synthesized Cbd Derivatives: Implications Of Therapeutic Strategies For Neuroinflammation, Josephine Mosser

Cell-Free Mitochondrial Dna (Mtdna) Triggers Vascular Dysfunction Via Toll-Like Receptor 9 (Tlr9)-Dependent Activation Of Inflammasomes, Mohin Amin Apr 2026

Cell-Free Mitochondrial Dna (Mtdna) Triggers Vascular Dysfunction Via Toll-Like Receptor 9 (Tlr9)-Dependent Activation Of Inflammasomes, Mohin Amin

Senior Theses

Hypertension is the leading global risk factor for mortality and is closely associated with vascular inflammation and dysfunction. Damaged mitochondria release cell-free mitochondrial DNA (cf-mtDNA), which activates toll-like receptor 9 (TLR9). The binding of TLR9 to mtDNA activates the NLRP3 inflammasome pathway, promoting the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines via gasdermin D (GSDMD), therefore worsening inflammation. However, the mechanisms linking mitochondrial injury to inflammation-induced vascular dysfunction remain unclear. We hypothesize that cf-mtDNA triggers TLR9-dependent NLRP3 inflammasome activation contributing to vascular and endothelial dysfunction. To assess that, adult male C57BL/6 were exposed to 28 consecutive days of chronic unpredictable stress (CUS) or …

Designing A Novel Inhibitor For Cobalamin-Independent Methionine Synthase, Damon Virgo Apr 2026

Designing A Novel Inhibitor For Cobalamin-Independent Methionine Synthase, Damon Virgo

Undergraduate Honors Papers

Microbial infections are some of the leading causes of death in the population at large, and antimicrobial-resistant “superbugs” have become a growing issue, so there is a great need to explore new and alternative pathways for fighting these diseases. One method for doing this is by exploring Methionine synthase (MetSyn), which plays a critical role in cellular one-carbon metabolism, catalyzing the methylation of homocysteine to form methionine, an essential amino acid required for protein synthesis and methyl group transfer reactions. Key differences between the B12-independant fungal MetSyn enzyme and the B12-dependant mammalian form can allow for selective targeting of the …

Intermediates Or Intermedius? An Examination Of Lotic Sternotherus In Baldwin And Mobile Counties, Al, Peyton A. Wilson

Theses

The Southeastern United States is a biodiversity hotspot, and turtles are no exception to the rule. This is particularly true for the genus Sternotherus. Alabama is the only state home to all six species of Sternotherus, including the recently described Intermediate Musk Turtle (Sternotherus intermedius). It was thought that the Perdido River was the western boundary of Sternotherus intermedius; however, surveys in recent years produced questionable individuals in several small watersheds feeding into the Mobile-Tensaw Delta, bringing the species true range into question, as well as the question of if this species has hybridized with its congener, …

Hidden Diversity In A Clonal Endemic: Insights Into Clematis Socialis From A Population Genetics Perspective, Joanna M. Lapoint

Theses

Clematis socialis (Kral) is a rare, federally endangered perennial species restricted to a small number of fragmented populations in Alabama and Georgia. The species exhibits extensive clonality and limited sexual recruitment, characteristics that complicate expectations regarding genetic diversity and population connectivity. Despite its conservation significance, genome-wide assessments of population structure have been lacking. We used genotyping-by-sequencing (GBS) to generate a genome-wide SNP dataset for 170 individuals sampled from six natural populations. Population structure and genetic differentiation were evaluated using Bayesian clustering, analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA), pairwise FST estimates, and network-based visualization. Analyses revealed strong genetic structuring among populations and …
